At that age, there's nothing much you can do. They ALL want to be princesses. And princess costumes don't go hand-in-hand with Canadian winters, for sure!
The best option is to put thermal fleece long underwear on beneath the dress, or else put a snow jacket on top. And don't stay out for too long. ;-)

As she gets older, she'll be done with the princess thing, which will make it easier. My daughter lost interest in princess costumes in grade two. That year, she had asked for a Rapunzel costume, which I bought, but at the 11th hour she changed her mind. At five o'clock on Halloween night, she was rummaging around in her dressing-up box and ended up wearing a witch costume instead. Easier to hide long underwear beneath a witch's robes. The following year she was Hermione (witch costume twice! But this time with a wand and a Gryffindor scarf), then the year after that a werewolf. Finally something truly warm! But I couldn't find a werewolf costume anywhere, and had to resort to a Chewbacca costume without the rubber mask and gloves. I found a wolf hat that nearly matched. Prosthetic fangs made it perfect. :-) Unfortunately, that Halloween it was unseasonably warm and RAINING so my poor girl was a soggy, sweaty mess inside her big furry suit! She was so traumatized by being uncomfortably hot that we were back to a dress last year, although that time it was Princess Leia in her white turtleneck gown, complete with blaster and side-bun hairdo.

If your second child is a boy, it will be easier. The costumes are warmer, and there is a marked absence of the depressing "sexy _____" costumes available (yes, even for pre-teens). Bleh.

Sarahthewhite - I guess we have exactly opposite problems! And yeah, I need to find that magical land of 60-70 degree weather!

My sister, who inherited ALL of the crafty in the family has offered to make DD a cloak. She said its pretty easy. Based on the fact that she can make all kinds of really cool, stuff, I am going to believe her and take her up on it!

I have nothing helpful to add, just that it made me chuckle a little because every year I am trying to figure out how to dress my son up in something he wants to wear without him dying of heat here on Florida! I also think a lot of typical boys costumes are more layered and all covered - do you know how many layers hobbits wear?! And the pre made ones are often that shiny synthetic stuff that make your skin feel claustrophobic. Anyway... I think that the only climates that are made for Halloween are those that stay about 70 degrees in October, at dusk. Does that pace exist, because I want to move there....

I haven't actually seen the film in question, but what about making a hooded cloak to go with it? That seems like a very princess-y type of outerwear, and quite easy to make. You could probably even buy one that was intended for a different costume, since capes and cloaks feature so prominently in many Halloween costumes!

I got them on preorder. I figured if I waited until they came in stock or got to stores, they would all be gone. And yeah, I got her Anna and Elsa. I figured she could pick one for Halloween and the other for her birthday. Or, she could share with her cousin when they play dress up.

How about adding a warm cape with a hood (like red riding hood)?

This post put a smile on my face. I grew up in remote AK just below the arctic circle. Our costumes either had to fit over our snowsuits or under then. If under then we would walk up the door, ring the doorbell, and open the top of the snowsuit just enough to give a glimpse of the costume underneath. We were 'flashers' as alaskagirl cleverly put it. Fabulous memories!

I'm from Europe and the holiday we dress up for is called Fasching (that's the German word for it anyway) and it falls mid-February. But that doesn't stop anyone from getting into costumes. In fact, many kindergartens and schools organise processions through towns so the kids can show off the costumes they made at school :)
Also, the celebrations can last from a week to 3 or even 4 weeks, depending on the year.
We have whole villages dressing up in the most ingenius costumes, competing for a prize. I am always in awe of the creativity displayed there. Villagers make costumes such as balet dancers, samba dancers, geyshas, Egyptians, everything with several layers.
Sorry, I have no real tips for you, I was just trying to show the cultural difference :)

Maybe you can scroll down this link to see how this holiday looks like in Slovenia :)

I can completely relate to this for my own childhood and for my children. We have had snow - loads on the ground, flurries and pelting rain. As a child I cannot remember ever not having snow.
I tried always to talk the kids into a larger costume that I could get layers under. Sometimes I was successful, sometimes not. One year both of my girls were fuzzy unicorns - jackpot!
It is hard because as a mom you really don't want to be the buzz kill. Sometimes I reverted to 2 costumes - the one for indoor school and the one for the night.
That is a pretty good solution when they are little because they love to play dressup.
Failing all my negotiations I squeeze layers underneath and they waddle around the hood like penquins! hahaha.

All I can say is that I sympathize. Kids here are like flashers at Halloween. There are indoor events for smaller kids, like the orchestra performing and then trick or treating on the 3 floors of the theatre. Sad, isn't it?

We used to live at 5700 feet in elevation. It was very cold at Halloween, and sometimes snowing. I used to put my son in long underwear under his costumes. Also, his costumes were often based on sweats. He was a devil (based on red hooded sweatshirt and sweatpants ), a cowboy (flannel shirt, blue jeans, hat, vest), presidential politician (bought a suit at the thrift store), and grim reaper (based on black hooded gown).

LOL! It was a rare year the kids didn't go trick or treating in snow suits!

Wizards (Harry Potter) were big, and there was a black lab and yellow lab combo that got 2 years wear and was warm over sweat pants and sweater. Attached laminated red hearts year 2 for ''Beanie Baby'. Then the penguin, and Inspector Gadget. Lego man (box with cut outs! And bicycle helmet) and Snoopy. I'm a sewer, so Holloween was big fun! House to house in our neighbourhood. I think grade 6 was the end of it though.

Heh.

I never realized how lucky I was.

My daughter at this age insisted that she wanted to be WOLF.

And there was nothing for it -- no wolf costumes available. So I had to make one.

I got her a grey fleece sweatsuit from a thrift store. And made a fur tail (from fake fur), a fur "vest" and some ears which I put on a hat. It was a genius costume for our climate.

The next year we lived in a warmer climate and she went as a witch...even there she needed a thermal underlayer.

That might be the ticket. Thermal undies.

I live northwest of you. Some years we are lucky enough that a long sleeved top/sweatshirt and leggings or sweatpants under will do the trick with no coat over the top. Indeed, it has been getting warmer and warmer here, and looking over pictures from the last few years, we have not needed coats over costumes. Then again, our community does Trick-or-Treat from 3 pm - 5 pm and not at night, so that makes it more tolerable, too.

I'd keep a lookout for sweatshirts and leggings or sweatpants in matching colours. Overall, I have a huge problem with how revealing girls and women's costumes are overall. And buy at least one size larger than what she wears in clothing if you can. Costumes always run small, and then with layering underneath, and we always need them bigger!

Hi Thistle, I hear you on what kids learn. My oldest learned multiple theme songs to cartoons she had never seen. It's crazy what they pick up. The latest is OMG. It is driving me crazy.

Anyhow, I bought Elsa and Anna dresses from a seller on Etsy. They are both full length and could easily be worn with a long sleeve tee and pants. A cloak could also be made easily out of fleece with very limited hand sewing. Have fun!

Wisconsin gets pretty cold. By the end of October, the leaves are gone, we've had multiple hard frosts, and we may have had some snow flurries. One year, there was full on blizzard at Halloween that locals still talk about (I didn't yet live here).

Thanks, will check out that website!

There's an online store called little dress up shop that a friend of mine gushes over. They have the Elsa dress. If Google doesn't find it for you, let me know and I'll get the link from her Facebook when I'm at a real computer.

Ugh, I feel your pain! Growing up in Ohio, nothing killed the costume more than having to bundle up. One year I was a hula girl- I thought it was sooo pretty, but I had to wear a turtleneck under the bikini top! (Granted, I would have had to wear *something*, but seasonal confusion, nonetheless!) We just sucked it up and enjoyed dressing up at school- indoors- and the photos. ToT was a lost cause- you just told people what you were.
Perhaps some "princess gloves" could make her feel princessy still and layer underneath. Also a couple pair of tight longjohns. (How cold does it get in WI at Halloween?)
When DS was a baby, he went as a baked potato. I just tinfoiled his stroller and bundled him in with lots of white fabric and a yellow pillow (pat of butter) to keep him cozy. :)

DD just started pre-school ( where did the time go!). She came home pretending to dress up as the "blue queen" and saying she wanted to be her for Halloween. Now, she has never seen the movie. So I know it must be the influence of the other kids, and as a parent, I feel like you just roll with it.

Knowing how insanely popular Elsa is, I have started looking for a costume early. I was willing to spend a little more knowing she has started to really enjoy dress up and would play with it long after Halloween. Still, it is darn near impossible to find a costumes for cold weather!

Really?!? Tank tops or short sleeves? Tulle skirts that end at the knee?!?

And it's not just Elsa costumes. It is all of them. Here is a link from Gymboree

http://www.gymboree.com/shop/d.....ID=kwanLf6

So, I am going to try to find a longer costume she can wear pants under. No way around wearing a coat outside it the end of October. And probably a cardigan inside, for that matter.

Any other ideas or suggestions? I know her preschool goes and trick or treats the nurses stations at a nearby nursing home. And we took her to trick or treat at a handful of houses last year. But then she was a bundled bumblebee.
