I'm glad to hear real people chime in on this. I have the Trader Joes jar and I have the capsules which I bought for the diet benefits, but I am not regimented about it so I keep at work and have used on my cuticles and a burn.
My neighbor mentioned she buys it by the drum from http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/
for cooking, but cautions to get the one without the coconut flavor which might not compliment all recipes. They also have specific beauty products, but it seems like the oil itself works for those.

Thanks for all the feedback and responses. VC the recipe sounds great.

I was at my parents house yesterday and my dad swore his margarine was healthy. I had mentioned that if you add up the various fats and come up short, it is usually the nasty trans fats and sure enough, that is what happened when I checked the label.

I picked them up a jar of the organic coconut oil after I left.

I used the coconut oil to season a new cast iron pan too. I have been reading a few books about healthy eating and decided to give cast iron a try since I have been a bit concerned about teflon and aluminum for some time. It worked. I used it for scrambled eggs and it didn't stick. Yay

I went through a phase of eating it in an attempt to lose weight, but I wasn't very disciplined about it. It does make a nice and effective moisturizer, although I'm very lazy about using it! When I remember, I like to slather it on just after a shower. I've used it for oil cleansing, too.

A friend of a friend recommended using coconut oil on chapped lips and under noses and for winter dryness so I bought a jar of Spectrum organic coconut oil in the baking section at Safeway (about $6!) and has it been heaven sent this winter.
Have been scooping it out a little at a time for dry legs and hands and it seems to work better than any of the lotions I tried.
Have yet to cook with it though I think I will pick up another jar for that.

Yes, I've used it as a leave-in conditioner and it made my dry hair feel much healthier.

In fact at that point I had two jars--one for eating and one for applying! Right now I only have the eating kind. It is very good indeed for sauteeing or for eating with toast, and as a general substitute for butter and other oils.

Melllls (did I put in enough l's?) - you'll find coconut oil in the grocery aisles - usually in a baking aisle or where they put the other cooking oils. Usually sold in a jar/tub, and is solid (looks a little bit like old-fashioned lard or something along those lines). For cooking, you melt the coconut oil - for beauty - not sure yet, as I haven't tried it as a skin or hair moisturizer just yet. I'm guessing that you could just slather on the coconut oil (dry areas such as knees, feet and so on). Even though I haven't tried it yet as a so-called beauty product, I would treat it like body butter, or something along those lines.

Meanwhile, I could see it being extremely useful for smoothing out ends of straight hair that was maybe a bit dry-ish, due to winter's harsh conditions. I'd be inclined to dab a bit of the solid-ish coconut oil into my hands and smooth it onto the ends of my hair.

You'll find coconut oil in every grocery store, natural foods market and the like.

I like cooking with coconut oil - but haven't yet tried it as a moisturizer. I will say though, that recently at Whole Foods, I was asking around for a gluten-free moisturizer, and the sales clerk suggested coconut oil if I couldn't find a specific body lotion that said "gluten free" on it. (I'm very sensitive to gluten).

One of my favourite meals is Thai Green Curry stir fry - heat up/melt a blob of coconut oil in a giant, wide and deep frying pan, sautee boneless, skinless chicken thighs,(snip up the thighs with kitchen scissors into bite size pieces), add broccoli florets, red bell peppers, mushrooms - whatever you have on hand. Add a tablespoon or two of Thai green curry paste, and a can of full-fat coconut milk. Simmer. DELISH! Here's a link to Thai Kitchen, which makes the paste:

http://www.thaikitchencanada.c.....-Pork.aspx (lots of good recipes here, and even though I don't always follow them exactly - a stir fry starting with coconut oil and adding protein, veggies, curry and coconut milk is FAB).

Oh, and here's another one - I sometimes find cubed, cut up fresh butternut squash at Costco. I'll melt some coconut oil, drizzle over the squash, stir up to make sure the melted coconut oil is evenly distributed, then sprinkle with good-quality cinnamon, stir, add more cinnamon, stir again etc. - then bake in the oven on a parchment lined baking sheet (bake at 350F to 400F for at least half an hour, up to 45 minutes). This is so good that I even like it cold the next day with breakfast. Weird, eh? It's good as a side dish for dinner, and then you'll have handy-dandy leftovers for the next day or evening (I usually make more than I need for one meal, since it takes *time* to bake/roast).

Enjoy

It's a good cooking oil, because it can be used at high heats. It's also way more healthy for you than canola oil and such. It's quite a staple on the paleo diet, which I've been doing somewhat. DH is starting to get into it, so that should make it easier.

I purchased a jar of organic coconut oil in Las Vegas the last time I was there as I heard it was a great moisturizer. I didn't use it too much until recently when I started putting in my bath to moisturize my legs which were flaking horribly from the cold dry winter. It left my skin feeling soft and smooth. I noticed I was going through it quickly so started looking around for local sources but was unsuccessful so I was thinking about ordering it from amazon. Earlier this week I saw a segment on Dr. Oz during which they discussed the healthy benefits of coconut oil in the diet that result from it being a medium chain triglyceride. It hadn't even occurred to me that I could eat it or cook with it.

I went to Costco later that day and had time so went down many aisles I would normally skip. I found a 1.5kg tub of organic cold pressed coconut oil. Yippee. While at the cash register, the bagger, cashier and I started talking about the oil and they were both raving about how great it was for hair and skin. Last night, I tried it on a piece of toast and it was really good. This morning I put a tsp. in my steel cut oats and that was good too. I read that studies have shown that 1-2 tbsp per day can also help with weight loss. Here is a link:
