I started wearing puffer vests as a teenager for outside activities and they are still my favorite article of cold weather outerwear when running errands and for doing anything active or strenuous outdoors. For me they are practical and warm, except for the coldest days or if I am just sitting or standing around outside, like at one of my son's ice hockey games, then I want my arms as insulated as my torso.

Now my feet and especially my hands (just recently started developing Raynaud's in my right hand) are always on the cold side, no matter what I wear or even if the temps only slightly dip.

One of the things I love about my citron puffer is that the sleeves and hood zip off so you can wear it as a vest. It's been surprising to me how often I've worn it that way and how fab it can really look.

Based on my new opinion of puffer vests, I think this one you've posted is gorgeous!

Interesting.

The vest is cool, of course!

I used to think that I'd feel like BJ...I couldn't see the reason for a down puffer vest. But I found that if you are outdoors doing stuff like...oh, I don't know....snowshoeing...then it is super practical if you have thermals and then a windshell...when your arms and legs are moving a lot, you need the warmth at your core.

So I quite enjoy mine and even wear it for "fashion" on casual days layered over a cashmere turtleneck and a T when the temps (and my activities) are right. Obviously not on the truly frigid days or days when I'm not going to be particularly active.

i have borrowed my sister's. my torso got too hot and sweaty, my arms were cold and clammy. i also need my extremities warm to feel warm. i can walk around in an open coat in 0F as long as my arms/legs are covered. in fact, my torso overheats really fast.

I really like the style, but I can see bj's point. Sleeveless puffers are not at all practical for me as outerwear, regardless of warmth or thickness. But, I am someone who has sworn off J.Crew's merino wool Tippi sweaters because the 3/4-sleeve isn't warm enough--I run very cold!

bj, have you ever worn one? A good down insulated one?

Is your objection to the concept the stylishness/fashion appeal, or the utility as outerwear?

Here's Alicia of Cheetah is the New Black wearing the Helmut Lange puffer vest we both (and I am sure others) pined over from Angie's blog post "Add a Dose of Fashion to the Puffy Vest."

http://www.cheetahisthenewblack.com/

Thought you might be interested to see it in action. It's on sale at Barneys now. :-)
Still out of my price range, though. Sigh.
