I think that for a coat, you always want it on the bigger side. It won't stretch, and you will always have something on underneath it. There is really a huge difference from style to style and brand to brand. I just bought a coat, and what sold me on it was the fit. It looks nice and sleek, but I can still fit a jacket underneath comfortably.

Wow - you were reading my mind! I was just going to post a similar question. Years ago when I was working in Boston, I would buy all my coats sized to fit over a suit (with shoulder pads)...you can imagine now that I'm a SAHM who doesn't wear suits, that they are all a bit big on me...

I'm just not sure how many layers and so on.

My current dilemma. Found a fabulous 3/4 length puffer. With just a turtleneck underneath it's sublime (and seems super toasty). But will I want another layer? I tried a lightweight boiled wool inside jacket, and it still fit through the torso, but the arms seemed a bit snug. Is that just the breaks? Should I instead go a size up and risk having it be a bit roomier through the middle? I have to order it online so it's so tough.

Great question, Patience...I hope to see more responses!

I'm glad you posted this. I logged on to post a question about coats for warmer weather. Like you I live in Texas. How do you judge the fit?

Also the weight of the coat? Should you buy it light weight and layer as needed?
I also wish Angie would do a blog post on this.

I know this topic has come up several times and maybe Angie is planning a blog post. (please) But I thought I'd start a thread on how to fit a coat. I feel like there are two issues since coats are layers: how it looks and how it feels. That is, you want the coat to be comfortable but you want it to look sleek/well fitting over your layers. I just bought a light coat and I had a really hard time deciding between two sizes. It's made me realize that I'm probably just different sizes in the shoulders and chest. The smaller size always fits through the chest but is snug in the shoulders and tight in the arm holes. The larger size is comfy in the shoulders and arms but roomy in the chest. What to do? The truth is my climate doesn't require a lot of layering-- otherwise the larger size would be a no brainer. Of course, one answer is to keep looking for the right fit, but I feel like this is a common trend and sometimes the fit is good enough and the style steals the show. (The particular coat in question is houndstooth.)

So I'm rambling, but I hope you will share your thoughts on how you think a coat should fit, by feel and look and any insights you've had on the topic.

Thanks!
