I think that’s very practical and will look good. My questions usually include, what do you already have? It’s not often I’d buy outerwear just for one event. Though the great ideas here could guide you if you were buying new coats(s) anyway and are great for shopping your closet.

Thank you ladies for your wonderful feedback! I never would have considered everything mentioned, due to the limits of my fashion savvy radar LOL. You brought up great points re weather, texture, proportions, colors/prints...

After some thought, my frugal/practical streak won out this time: I'll be wearing a cropped, belted black leather jacket with thinsulate for a little extra warmth. Then, glam it up with the faux fur collar/scarf below as a nod to the fur trend (both the jacket and fur can also be used throughout fall and winter).

(You can find the fur scarf @ Amazon under "Dikoaina Extra Large Women's Faux Fur Collar for Winter Coat" --size 120cm [the larger size]).

Many thanks again! I'll try to remember to take pics and send as a festive update. Hope all of you have some festivities to look forward to as well in the upcoming months :)

Agree with Angie. With this dress you have many possibilities.

When wearing long dresses or skirts as partywear in colder months, I usually wear one of these pieces of outerwear:
● An offwhite cape that is around knee-length or a little shorter (the hem is curvy). If needed, I'll wear an extra layer, i.e. a wool cardigan, under it.
● A black quilted velvet winter jacket.

I always find cool weather outerwear over dressy wear an issue with me too. I always end up doing the “ fashion show” bit and deciding at last moment which one to go with. The fake fun does sound fun but ultimately whatever gives you most comfort is best. Nothing worse than chattering teeth and that freezing feeling for me. Have a great time!

Sounds like you won't need a coat at all! But i don't recommend faux fur + velvet for practical reasons. Velvet is a pet fur magnet, lint rollers required! I like Staysfits idea of mahogany and or animal print accessories with it

Lovely dress. It is unlikely to be super cold in the Santa Cruz mountains in October. Next week lows are around 50F and highs 70FCheck the weather as the event approaches You may need to be prepared for cool and rain.

When I go to winter formal events, I wear either a long down puffer, a long formal wool coat, or a long thinsulate dressy coat that I picked up a few years ago for such occasions because it looks more sleek and dressy. I put the long coat over the top of a cropped topper, but I’m guessing it’s colder here in CNY than where you will be. Layers are my friend!

Your dress is gorgeous. Despite the prevailing opinion to go with faux fur, I would pick a cropped leather jacket. When I imagine it, the mix of textures when using faux fur doesn’t seem right to me......mixing velvet and faux fur vs. mixing velvet and leather, I think it would look elegant with a gorgeous black leather topper or if you are bold you could use one in a mahogany which would set off the color of that velvet. If you found the right one, it could look particularly unique and certainly appropriate for fall. Lots of people will be wearing faux fur. If you want animal print, use it for your bag and find one with some trim that matches the jacket and shoes you pick. The color scheme, especially if you add a touch of animal print (leopard) reminds me of the changing colors of fall leaves. You would be a walking poem.

Good luck shopping! Enjoy the event!

What's the temperature going to be like?

All I can say is that I go to formals here in Boston every year in January & February when there's frequently a foot of snow on the ground and it's very cold. I've been on the lookout for years for a fancy coat for these formals, but reality is that a puffer is what makes the most sense, as I often have to wear snow boots to the venue and change into fancy footwear once I get there!

If it's not going to be that cold, then I would totally opt for a shrunken jacket. Faux fur this year for sure since it's on trend. Leopard would work great with that dress, but you could go multiple directions.

Is the wedding being held outside? Or do you just have to get there in a coat and you'll be warm once inside?

I agree that faux fur would be really fun (and very current), but if you are feeling a bit adventurous, maybe think about a tonal or metallic puffer?

And I agree it should be shorter.

Agreed, a short fur jacket. The other look I've seen in vintage style (aside from full-length evening coats) is the above-knee-length coat in a straight cut, not fitted. The volume balances the extra length and slim fit around the lower legs. Don't forget gloves!

Seldom a long dress wearer, but I like the looks of a short faux fur jacket.
The volume seems to balance the volume/ length on the bottom.

Hi ladies, I’ve had to reduce my YouLookFab time these days, but love to stay updated with your comments and Angie’s weekly posts!

In a few weeks I’m attending an October evening wedding in the CA mountains (Big Basin area). Anticipating the chill, I'll be wearing this full length, long sleeved, high neck burgundy velvet dress (along with thick black stockings and ankle booties):

https://www.overstock.com/Clot.....archidx=43

However, I’m clueless what kind of coat will suit the length and chilly weather? I’ve been exploring: full length faux fur coat, cropped fur lined leather jacket, knee length wool coat…Your help would be wonderful, thank you kindly.
