Haha, Angie! I know you run cold. I used to. These days, though, I'm running warmer. My really warm sweaters are going unworn so far this winter, although it's early yet. Temps in the 40s are not terribly cold, to my way of thinking these days. :-)

One advantage of taking a puffer -- it doubles nicely as a pillow for relaxing on airplanes and trains! If your puffer is not terribly bulky and it compresses well for packing, it may be your best option.

(Of course, if you run warm like me, I bet you'd be fine layering wool pieces under a trench, unless Canada had a sudden cold snap next week. Depends on how much you plan to be indoors vs outdoors too and if your outdoor time will be active or just standing still, which is always coldest. So I guess I'm making the opposite argument now! I hate being sweaty so I'd personally risk being too cold. I've never worn a puffer so I don't know how it works; my wool coats tend to be fairly flexible in keeping me warm but not overheating me.)

Are you mainly going to be inside/using public transport? I find most buses and metros (and I've used both Toronto's and Montreal's) are kept very warm, to the point that I feel stuffy and overheated. Even when it's cold outside. So I prefer to wear a heavier coat over lighter outfit underneath; it's easy to slip the coat on and off and carry it over an arm and I stay comfortable in central heating thanks to less heavy clothes underneath. And I stay cosy while waiting for the bus.

With that in mind, I'd opt for the puffer. You can always wear it open if it's too warm when you're walking around Baltimore and NYC. Or leave it in your hotel room and just wear a sweater & the blazer; since it's all wool and you also have a cashmere scarf, you might be comfortable enough in that (I am as long as it's around 40 out).

I guess I feel the opposite to Janet. You need a warm wool coat for NYC and Baltimore, and I'd bring along your puffer anyway.

I'm in the Baltimore area, and it's looking like the next few days will be fairly typical for this time of year here -- highs in the 40s, overnight lows in the 30s, not terribly windy. I think we're due for some rain Tuesday. I think the puffer will be overkill for Baltimore and NYC, but it's harder for me to speak about Canada in the winter -- I think it depends very heavily on what part of Canada. I've been to the Montreal and Toronto areas in February, and it can get pretty darn cold. The puffer might be welcome there.

I can definitely relate to the "too hot, too cold" dilemma. I usually solve it by layering. I like traveling with a coat that is a bit lighter, and then supplementing for warmth with layers underneath like a cashmere hoodie or other light but insulating layer, plus a good scarf to help keep cold breezes out from my neck and chest. However, I'm also reaching the age where I'm more worried about overheating than being cold. As long as I have warm hands and feet, I'm generally good to go. So warm gloves/mittens and socks, and even a hat, are a good idea for the whole trip.

This mild winter is wreaking havoc on my travel capsules, and I don't know which coat to pack.
I'll be heading to the East later today for a conference, (Baltimore and NYC) and will be then going to Canada. The weather this week in the East Coast is relatively mild, nothing below freezing, but the weather in Canada is cooler.
My dilemma is that I have a puffer that is much too warm for these mild temperatures, and a trench coat that might be too cold for subfreezing temps.
"Too warm" might not seeming like a dilemma, but imagine sweating through your clothing and your coat, and having your first destination is a professional conference. It doesn't take long for the my coat to resemble a gym top when I'm wearing it in "warm" weather.
"Too cold" is also unpleasant, especially when you're waiting for a bus.
Aside from a coat, I'll be bringing along silk blouses, cashmere sweaters, a long cashmere travel wrap, and possibly a thick wool blazer.
Would these garments combined with a BB cotton trench be warm enough for the GTA now, or would you err on the side of caution and pack the puffer?
Have you faced the "too hot, too cold" dilemma, and what did you ultimately decide?
