I've seen yarn made from milk protein. They certainly do come up with interesting ideas. We were just watching something on Netflix where they showed goats that had some spider DNA encoded into them. They take the goat's milk, and extract spider silk protein and make that into fiber. It's very strong and lightweight.

What a great story Kari!!
Anke Domaske is a win win win win kinda lady!----entrepreneurial, innovative using a spoiled and otherwise waste product, hugely positive role model in fashion and science and business!

First thing I thought about too was old sippy cup milk.

Taylor, my first thought was odor, too! I love that they keep coming up with alternative natural fibers. I love modal/bamboo and don't know what I did without it 10 years ago. I choose it over similar feeling rayon blends whenever possible.

I'm curious about that too, April. Maybe someday they'll be available in stores in the US for us to see in person.

Lynne, I also have a bamboo fiber knit top. It's a rose-colored cowl neck that is completely soft and comfortable. I'd never have believed it was not soft cotton!

wow - amazing! I have a few things that are made with Bamboo fibre rather than cotton, and they're lovely. But milk protiens? Who knew!

Wow, some lovely items on their site! I wonder if their fabric has any special properties, like the HeatTech fabric that is also coated with a milk protein and keeps you warmer.

I caught a radio interview with fashion designer and biologist Anke Domaske the other day talking about her fashion designs, which are made from a fabric that she and her team designed that is primarily composed of a protein from sour milk. (Apparently, the finished product has a texture/feel very similar to silk. It looks beautiful from what I can see from the video.)
I found it absolutely fascinating and couldn't resist sharing, even though I probably should have waited for the weekly link roundup.

Here's a video and article that talk a bit more about it:
http://dvice.com/archives/2011.....es-a-1.php

And the website for the brand: http://www.mademoisellechichi.com
