Super interesting, Rachy. And you raise some good questions.

I'm with Helena -- I dont mind a clack. I think it was -- yes, Cee! -- my mother's love of 1930s musicals. All those tapping shoes...I love the sound. Anyway, I know I've clacked my way down a few granite floors and corridors and while sometimes I think, well, I'm certainly announcing my presence here, I've never really minded it much. I mean, except if people were trying to write exams or something in the rooms to the side...

Sometimes I think about what roads sounded like in the 19th century. The horses hooves...a different sound than all the engines.

Interesting observation! It bugs me if my shoes clack or squeak at work but not enough to not wear them usually. I'm with Helena regarding the pendulum - swings up and swings down. Are we at the bottom yet though? Hard to say. I had to chuckle at "maybe Athleisure is too dressy". Maybe since that's what the moms wear it is out for the kids.

I have become very aware of "clacking" shoes. I work in a school building, and EVERYONE turns to look at the person clonking in a quiet hallway. I've even attempted to buy rubber heel taps in an attempt to quiet some favorites (to varying degrees of success). I very much prefer a blingy sneaker or rubber soled boot instead of a clacking one, and often test them in stores to be sure before I buy.

I definitely do dress for buildings though. The wedge heeled sandals that were just fine in the shop went to consignment after trying to navigate steps. And I do often have to layer in offices cause the agencies are too stingy to put the heat on properly!

A little off topic, but your post Rachy made me think of memories associated with sound. I had a charming colleague whose rapid fire click clacking heels never failed to make me smile. It’s lovely to be able to identify the approach of a dear one.

Helena said: "I think things like central heat and air conditioning probably drive lots of layering that wouldn't otherwise happen."

I agree completely. Since I've been working at home, where I can control the temperature, my summertime layering is almost completely gone. I layer in winter still, but just because I need multiple layers to stay warm without a crazy heating bill; I don't remove them throughout the day.

I have to admit, I love a good clack. I remember going to the father-daughter dance in high school and clacking down the hall in my dressy outfit. The Vice principal commented about loving my "confident stride" ... perhaps that's where my love of heels comes from!

Angie, this sounds like DDs uniform ... interestingly though, she and her BFF have just 'pitched' me and the other mom on taking them to dinner downtown specifically so we can all dress up ... granted their version of dress up is jeans and a nice bodysuit, but even the concept would have been a no-go a couple of years ago ... the pendulum swings, as it does!

We often just cannot be sure on how intentional the looks we see are.

I’ve seen this too, Carla. I guess it’s like wearing men’s boxers as shorts — that was the thing when I was in high school. Some do it more successfully than others IMO.

Interesting about the school uniforms, especially the shoes! School uniforms have devolved to the same tee shirt and khakis for kids around here.

Some interesting observations. I am amazed at how most schools continue to stick to a very strict uniform code, with little having changed since the days I was at school.

My DS has to arrive and leave school in his formal uniform (winter uniform comprises blazer, tie, shirt, trousers, belt, school socks and black dress shoes), even if sport is the very first activity of the day (requiring an immediate change out of the formal uniform into the sports uniform).

If not trainers, I suspect she'll at least switch to rubber soled boots &/ or heels At least that's the compromise I've made, as someone naturally inclined towards dressy maximalism.

I never thought I'd be a flatform (flat platforms) or lug soled sort of person, but I now find 'traditional' (thin) soled shoes to be uncomfortable on hard, modern surfaces (tiled floors, concrete pavements, metal staircases etc).

Mr. M worries about what to wear now more than he did in the days when a suit, dress shirt and shoes, and tie were usually required. Now it's constant questioning: can I wear Levis? Should I wear a blazer but dispense with the tie? Nothing more embarrassing than showing up in a suit and all the men are wearing jeans and a casual shirt. I think it's easier for me--I rarely wear a skirt anymore.

In the cold, snowy city where I grew up, girls had to wear dresses or skirts to school. Finally in college it was ok to wear pants (not jeans) once in a while, although the women who did might be subject to teasing. I had a part-time job after classes and couldn't wear pants to work. So skirts and dresses, no matter how high the snow was piling up.

Looking back, I can't believe "they" made us wear dresses almost everywhere no matter what the weather.

I’m totally curious now about what train stations sounded like in the 19th century. I feel certain the acoustics of buildings have changed a lot. As in, no one can build a good concert hall now.

I prefer skirts, but do find them fussy for commuting—especially at 7am in the morning (cold and dark!). I may be in a dress in the garden before I leave for work, but I’ll switch to pants for going out. I also started seriously in on the puffer thing in Tucson, AZ, of all places. I went around in 120F heat with a puffer because of A/C.

Stretch fabric I suspect is very much an infrastructural artifact of readymade clothing: ‘custom’ fit with a plain, straight seam - no darts, no tucks.

An interesting observation. I do wonder if “cold” surfaces make us instinctively turn to warm/soft clothes.

Was at the DMV a few weeks ago (Department of Motor Vehicles for non-US Fabbers) for my drivers license renewal. 8 or 9 am. My first thought at looking around at the crowd (and myself included) was “disheveled.” Which was neither kind nor accurate! 8am institutional fluorescent lighting does no-one any favors, the process was actually extremely efficient and organized, and who wouldn’t want some personal comfort as a bit of reassurance when dealing with mundane bureaucracy.

And thanks for getting vaccinated! DH and I got our Covid and flu shots last week.

That IS interesting!

It can feel a little vulnerable to use a floating staircase in anything other than pants!

Interesting observation, rachylou. If you're talking about moving towards comfort, then think of what's happening to bras. It seems like half of bras in catalogs these days are wireless, bralettes, or some type of hybrid jogging bra.

Also, I see a trend more and more towards snappy but casual outfits for dining out. The coolest people seem to be wearing a great tee or sweater, great jeans, and an easy shoe. When you get there in your heels and dress you feel a little out of place.

haha! I, too, had a "public heel clacking" incident, but thankfully, it was walking to my car on the pavement and not inside. hee hee. I think it is a noise we're no longer used to hearing because we were all clacking together in unison. Now we're all so quiet, the clackers are noticeable! I'm starting to see things swing the other way, back to heels. Seeing many more heels in ads, and starting to see more out and about downtown.
