I have a trench coat with a belt on it. I hate the belt. I actually leave the belt in the beltloops & then tie the belt in the back so that I don't lose it. I am not sure why I don't just throw it away.

I think Mander is right, it can work on more body types if the pieces is already slightly structured with darts or additional seams. In the link on your post, I think it would look fabulous with a long leather belt replacing the sash --- perhaps looped over instead of actually buckled. Also, have you ever tried tying the sash loosely, letting the ends drape down over one hip?

Actually, I am the odd girl out on this one. I used to love this look because it would emphasize my narrow waist and conceal my broad hips under billowing fabric. I could get away with the volume because I am tall. However, as I get older, My waist is thickening up, changing the proportionate effect, and I can't carry this off anymore. Sad.

For me this only works if the item in question is relatively fitted in the first place. So I'm happy to tie the belt on my trench coat, but I have this billowy shirt dress that I've tried belting and it just doesn't feel right.

I'm short waisted too and get that sloppy sack look too. I think a tailored fit is essential, not particularly easy off the rack.

Ahh - I replied to this about 11 hours ago and must have forgotten to press send!

Thanks for all your comments!
Always Trying - for me a 2 inch belt is about the perfect width!

But - that is a proper belt, either stiff or elastic - as Lyn says "wider and not too flimsy". Most self ties aren't like that

I kind of agree Anne!
The best version for me is usually wider and not too flimsy, otherwise I often remove belts altogether.

How interesting Anne! I have trouble with these on occasion, due to short waist + broad shoulders. I'd think with a longer waist and daintier shoulders like yours these should be pretty flattering. I wonder if fabrication might be part of the issue? Stiffer fabrics are going to create a stricter more decisive line, and softer fabrics are going to flop around a bit. I try not to tie mine too tight, and usually in a knot as opposed to a bow.

I don't always like this look on myself from the back, it seems to lengthen and accentuate the curves there.

I don't look good in this stuff either. A belt 2 inches wide leaves 2 inches between waist and boobs..not a good look!!

I'm also not a fan of this look on myself. I'll tie a belt (gently) around an already semi-fitted dress with the knot/bow in the back, and that works pretty well. With jackets and things, tying it down always seems to produce funky wrinkles. I'm not sure I've ever seen someone in person wear it either.

I have a theory that it works best with a slightly too-large garment, because I feel like it could be tied fairly loosely and still produce the waist-cinching effect, but I've never tried.

I love the look of these on other people (here is an example of what I mean)
http://www1.macys.com/shop/pro.....#038;CAGPS...
but on myself I feel like a bag of flour with a rope tied around the middle.

I like the feel of them too - and go all the way with a tied long length dressing gown that looks most unflattering but feel great. I won't wear them out of the house though

I am presuming it is my long, straight torso and lack of bust that make this look not work for me. Any thoughts?
