Thanks, notsaf and Janet.
This is the first time I've taken such a narrow focus. But have available most of my S/S tops, which gives me a chance to see which ones I gravitate toward and why, and sort of capsulizing things to which are most versatile, or have a specific use.
In the holding zone I did put a grouping of items I think I "would wear" in the season.
Otherwise in the fall I would be wearing a different group of items to keep warm so it would be a new ballgame.

Smart move! You’re in my brain. I pulled out my summer dresses the other day and tried them all on to assess them. And I put the dressier ones back in my seasonal storage/holding zone area because I don’t foresee needing them this summer, while mostly continuing to shelter in place. (I don’t trust the rush to reopen and am going to continue doing what we have been doing, so my activities are limited for the time being and I’m ok with that.) I can always pull them out if things change.

I’m not being quick at all to discard anything. But I am spending my days in very casual wear — gear, shorts, tees. Athleta could basically clothe me all spring and summer.

I've also found that I like to have in-between clothes for dinner-prep and nighttime relaxing/TV/reading/etc. that are both distinct from my "daytime" clothes (jeans+top) and from PJ's. I never used to have much of this "loungewear" category. Your post makes me think that it would be a good idea to set up a part of my closet for that!

For the closet/organizing nerd inspiration, if so inclined!

So many of my former activities are either obsolete or on hold now that I decided to remove everything from my closet that I would only wear for those occasions and only the warm-weather items of those. For me that includes all skirts, dresses, almost all former workwear bottoms (lot were tropical wools or other fabrics for very air-conditioned environment), most blazers/jackets. Also anything that does not fit, such as a few summer-weight pants that I hoped to wear now but were, umm, a little too tight but would still be very good if umm, they became not too tight. Remove is the word, rather than edit, which would have been good also, but I think it is better just to use the holding zone approach and review in the fall or whenever. I will no longer need daily "workwear" but will later review and edit for items that cross over to other activities and also small seasonal capsules of business-casual.

I am a hang-almost everything person--including knits and jeans and a lot of T's but I even expanded that approach.
My categories now are:
--Casual pants and jeans I would wear at home or out for grocery run etc --only have about 6 due to fits.
--Loungewear pants--about 6, including 2 that "cross over" to casual. I have hung these long-wise in the very small full-length section organized smack dab in the middle (virtually all of my main closet is double-rod, though some sections are removable). Most could have been kept in drawers but they stay nicer hanging from skirt hangers and I like the signal that these are different from my "crisper" casual pants.
--Toppers -only those I can see myself wearing at home, when I need to toss on due to change in weather, AC chilly, or out for grocery run etc--includes hoodies and cardigans but including some nicer cardigans I was "saving" for dresses and fancier occasions--some of these are shorter and boxier hence plan to try with the higher-waisted bottoms instead of "saving". Cotton utility/safari-type jackets. Knit blazer.
--Tops-- have a LOT of spring-summer tops that are wearable in pandemic. One section for a group I've identified as working especially well with the lounge pants, and then a range of T's, better knitwear, cotton or rayon button-front shirts, one or 2 silk shirts.

I do use drawers for gardening clothes, exercise wear, PJ's, socks, underthings. I have started editing and organizing those and decided I want to try some of my former PJ items in my loungewear capsule, because this capsule needs to be VERY comfortable to compete with going directly into pajamas after a day of yardwork, and also signals "winding down". Think glass of iced tea or wine, chopping veggies for dinner, reading a book and watching the birds, Bob Marley playing.

Items that I selected included drapey bottoms and also T's that shrank in the wash but I kept due to "happy colors and now are a better length for high-waisted pants, and some button-front knit PJ tops that function like a soft shirt (not shown).

Here are some of the PJ drawer raid results:
Pic 1 is DKNY loungewear bottoms with an AT chambray shirt.
2- high-waisted wide leg sweatpants with Aritizia cropped T. But, the waist is not as high on these so pic 3 shows "shrunken T" which gives a little more coverage.
4 is bottoms from a pj set but with WHBM shirt. Works with other shirts and longer knitwear tops

My drawer raid turned up other items and outfit options that I think I will enjoy (some better as temps rise during summer), but this is likely enough pajama posing! I will enjoy experimenting.

My closet is now about half as full.
