I put my off-season stuff in a big suitcase under the bed and swap in spring/fall. Although, in truth, most of the time the weather here is not dramatically different -- damp, chilly, with occasional really warm or cold spells, so there isn't that much to swap out except coats.

I consider my area as having 3 seasons... summer spans June-October, then a fall/winter mix (we'll call finter) from October-February and then Spring covers March-June. I don't rotate my clothes... they all fit on about 6 feet of hanging space and everything stays there year round. I don't have a ton of extra storage space, so it is more practical for me to keep it all in my bedroom closet.

Yep, I rotate. I have the luxury of having another closet in a spare bedroom (used as a playroom/study room) that I use as a holding spot for clothes that might be headed toward donation, and for out-of-season clothes.

I'm in two seasons here, but I rotate - for the three months of summer I put away all my really heavy winter stuff, and right now all my summer stuff is in storage bags under the bed. There is not a lot of transition there...

What you have to do is get a kid to move out and take over their bedroom as your own closet (or MK's Woman Cave). Then you never have to rotate! It's lovely!

As for where the out-of-season wardrobe goes, we have a large closet in our downstairs (TV room/den space -- more or less a finished basement). It holds all kinds of stuff, including a couple of hanging wardrobe garment bags for out-of-season clothes and other infrequently worn items like formalwear and ski coats.

me...me... me... me... OK, what's your question? Let me read it, I'll be back! :)

I'm back:)

No, I don't rotate my clothes, I only put away shorts and some skirts that are 100% summer. By putting away, I mean collapsing them on one of 'em spacebags. It could be because most of my tops can be layered all year long. I also tend to buy natural fabrics like cotton and silk, which is all season for me.

As far as sweaters. I keep them folded in clear boxes and put them out to air, a little before fall rolls upon us, but they stay in the same closet.

i only rotate shoes. by which i mean placing the current seasons' shoes in the shoe closet by the back door and moving the out of season shoes into the hall closet. boots live in the hall closet year round.

eta: everything else fits into my closets. i travel to different weather frequently enough during the year that i would still need access to spring-weight/resort clothes during the winter.

Mo, That is the question, right? I have a large plastic bin that I use for out of season clothes. It lives in an inaccessible corner of the closet. I would love to be able to keep everything out at once but it seems like at least moving seasonal clothes to the prime real estate in the closet is the norm here.

I don't rotate. I use a smaller-sized closet and a dresser and have managed to make everything fit. xD I do try to have clothing that will mostly work all year round though; I have a few things like heavier jackets and swimwear that don't, but I'll winterize sundresses and wear velvet blazers in the summer. That's more of a conscious choice to utilize all of my clothing all the time though.

I don't, nor have I ever, rotate my clothes. For many years I lived in temperate regions in CA where I didn't need heavy wool coats or the like. But once I started this moving back and forth from the mountains to the beach over and over again, this last decade, I accumulated all seasons worth of clothing. Yet, even at 160 pieces (not counting gear, pj's, loungewear or shoes) it fits in one standard closet, and a 6 drawer dresser, with the coats & jackets in a coat closet. I thought I had a large wardrobe, but maye not if I've never had to rotate clothing by season. And here's a dumb question - where do the out of season items go exactly?

I don't have that many things, I get by with my one closet and four seasons. Although the shoes and gear are stored elsewhere. I want to keep it this way - I would prefer purging to expanding my closet space.

Like others, I do a rotation of some (not all) clothes twice a year. I don't have my closet fully reorganized (DH is planning on putting in some shelves) so normally I just have 3-4 bags (as in sturdy shopping bags from Loft or Talbots) filled with out-of-season clothes sitting in the back of the closet. Much of my wardrobe spans multiple seasons (thin cardigans, trousers, blouses, denim) but at some point it becomes too confusing to dig through tanks and such in the winter or thick sweaters in the summer.

I have the world's smallest closet and definitely swap out my wardrobe according to season. Right now, my closet has fall/winter clothes in it and spring/summer is kept in an extra closet downstairs. Like Janet, in April I will bring up spring/summer and put fall/winter downstairs. Unless I win the lottery, I don't see that changing anytime soon!

I rotate, Rita. Spring/summer are one rotation; fall/winter the other, although a few items I consider all season and they stay, and a few more are strictly spring/fall, so I leave them out in their season(s) and then put them away with the others.

This used to bother me a lot, too, but I'm actually beginning to like it. I always purge before transferring one season's clothes to the alternate closet, and then I purge AGAIN at start of season.

For storage, I have a little bit of hanger space in a hallway closet near our bedroom, as well as a small dresser along with a basket for sweaters, etc. Granted, my wardrobe is quite small.

Yep, I switch out the wardrobe in April and October. I have way less in my "spare" closet now than I used to, but I still find it helpful to not have thin little tank tops and summer skirts in with the clothes I am wearing this time of year, and vice versa.

I do rotate out my clothes because I don't have enough space in my wardrobe. I especially rotate out my winter and summer clothes as they take up a lot of room. The rest of my wardrobe is interchangeable so that stays in year round.

For people who live in a four season climate without a real dominant season, do you change out your wardrobe seasonally?

I am really trying to get to the point where I don't have to rotate my clothes seasonally but I'm not sure if I'll ever get there. I am in the process of redesigning my bedroom closet. Even if I maximize every inch of space, I still don't think I will have enough room for four seasons worth of clothes and shoes. I think I need a bigger house!!
