Good for you Janet! I wish I could return clothes so easy. The shops around here never herd of that.

Good for you, Janet! it is very liberating, isn't it?
Since joining YLF last year I purged around 85% of my wardrobe. It was like a breath of fresh air to realize that I do not need to keep and wear something just because it is still in good shape and it cost me money if it does not make me feel fab. I can count on a couple of hands what did I keep from my pre-YLF life: 3 pairs of shoes, 2 jackets, 3 skirts, 1 dress, less than 10 tops... the rest is gone and gave me an opportunity to get things I like!

Janet,
I'm right there with you. To make new closet space (in a new home) work for me, I have to pare down. I thought it would be hard because I'm a regular purger and therefore didn't know how I'd get rid of the stuff I like. It hasn't been hard at all. Turns out that when I put on my "critical eye" (dare I say, my Angie eye), the stuff I really love and love to wear jumps out.
One major area of purging has been my tee-shirt collection. I'm not talking big, baggy tee-shirts. I'm talking cute, fitted, expensive ones (Splendid, James Perse and the like) that I have been steadily amassing for YEARS. I think YLF has played a major role in moving me away from wearing jeans and tees on the weekends. Now I want to wear jeans with a fab sweater or a silk blouse. Of course I have retained some tank tops and such for layering, but I just couldn't believe how much knitwear I had been hanging on to.

Also, your comment on the suits rings true. I wear a suit about 6 times a year, at most. I probably don't need 5 suits, just in case. Especially since they are all outdated. Those are next on the chopping block!

Finally, my shoe purging was made easier because I decided to keep only what I could easily fit in a defined part of my closet; any extras had to go. I know that may seem arbitrary to some, but it's enough space and it forced me to really think about what I wear and what I don't.

I'm doing the hanger turning, and several items have gone into the consignment bag without ever making it onto my body. It is really enlightening and I'm so glad you're feeling good about it. There are moments when I am stunned and horrified at the things I've bought pre_YLF (mostly thrifted) and WHY they are in my closet.

I was surprised to realize how many items I've had for a long time -- 5 years or more -- and my lifestyle and personal style has changed in that time by leaps and bounds. Some things were kind of sentimental, but is sentimental really worth valuable wardrobe space?

One funny instance: I came across a suit (yes, a suit, when was the last time I needed a suit?? 15 years ago??), and when I bought it the jacket fit well but the pants were snug. Well, now the pants fit fine but the jacket is big. I used to wear the jacket with jeans, but now the whole thing is going to consignment. The pants even still have the tags on!

This sounds like a very successful closet purge. And extra kudos for trying on every single item, even one's that felt like they were no brainer keepers before. It's amazing how one's tastes can change over time and it's great that you are only keeping wardrobe items that truly work for you in both fit and style. It's better to have a smaller closet of items that 100% work for you, than a very full closet of a bunch of maybe items. Besides there are only 7 days in a week, and one can only wear so many clothes at a time anyway. I am always amazed at how little of my wardrobe I wear each season. Especially when you have items you like and want to repeat wearing.

Yay, good for you! I just went through that whole process too. It makes such a difference walking into a closet that is clean, organized, and where you can see everything and it all fits and you're excited to wear all of the things in it. I'm trying to get more creative with combining fewer pieces (still have to do my wardrobe remix challenge!) rather than having a bunch of clothes that are okay but not great. I am also getting pickier about what I buy and am not afraid to return things that I'm not excited about. If I don't want to rip off the tags and wear it the next day, it should probably get returned!

Bravo--keep up the good work! And congrats on the weight loss!

Wow - half your wardrobe?! I guess I've ditched about 1/3 over the last 2 years. But I bought quite a bit new as well, so it doesn't feel quite as momentous as having the closet suddenly half full! Your Goodwill is going to like you very much

I know we've discussed this before, but over the last few weeks I have been doing my most serious closet purge EVER, in light of 1) the recent demise of the hanging rack in our basement closet, and 2) my weight loss this year.

I am pretty sure nearly half of my very large wardrobe has ended up on the chopping block. I've been attacking it in small chunks, and last night I dug into my cool weather blazers and cardigans. I tried on each and every one, even the ones I thought were no-brainer keepers. A couple of them turned out to not be such winners after all, especially since I treated myself to an absolutely fab new Theory jacket when I was in NYC.

My eye has been changing since frequenting YLF. I'm getting choosier. I used to keep all sorts of things -- and buy new things of dubious usefulness -- in the hopes that I could find some sort of way to make them work. Last night I found myself trying a vest with about 8 different tops before I realized I was working way too hard to make a flawed piece (for my body and style) into something acceptable. That's just not good enough anymore!

So, my local consignment shop thanks you, YLF!
