Thnx for adding pics Aida! I love that you annotated them. hehe It looks like our wardrobes are fairly similar sizes too. I loved hearing about how your closet has changed since then; it makes me want to photograph my closet on a semi-regular basis to see how things are changing! 2-3 years ago almost all of my tops were knits; I hadn't yet realised that woven blouses are perfect for summers here.

Lovely and organized! Lots of rusty earth tones in there. I like your pretty boxes! My washing strategy is pretty similar to yours, though I do take things to the dry cleaners as needed.

I also like seeing closet pics, I'm desperate to re-do mine at some point. I'd share but it's currently a mess right now as I'm in the middle of a massive wardrobe reassessment -_- I can show you an older photo from 2011, though I've changed quite a bit since then. Basic organization is the same, but the pieces have changed quite a bit: I can tell you that the jacket section is MUCH larger now, and fairly colorful. Much of the black is now white. Tops and cardigans has shrunken dramatically, and sweaters of all kinds has increased. Colorwise, I've got lots of white/gray/black with shots of orange, red, teal/blue, and mint ^^

On top now it's: jeans, all-season sweaters, current season sweaters, sweater dresses, cardigans, layering tees, clutches.

On the rack now it's: pants, dresses, tops, vests, shorts, skirts, indoor jackets, scarves, belts.

And on the floor it's still shoes, shoes, shoes ;)
Also, all my purses are in a pile next to those shoes right now ><

What a beautiful closet! I wish I was as organized! Due to lack of closet space, I hang two items on one hanger. And I'm on the same page when it comes to laundry. When I lived in the tropics, I washed after every wear but here I find I don't perspire as much, especially in the cooler seasons, so I only wash after two or so wears.

Thnx everyone for taking the time to reply! It took work to set up at the beginning (2 years ago), and some tweaks since then, but now it's pretty self sustaining, which is nice. Angie, I'm thrilled you like it! Your own closet is such an inspiration: I wish I had a rod that kept my hangers evenly spaced. Of course, then I'd have to be stricter about my woven shirt/blouse collection, hehe. I was a bit nervous you'd (gently and politely) tell me I need more discipline in the quality vs quantity department.

Mo and Alexandra, thanks for sharing! I love how both of yours have lots of space between the clothes and matching hangers. Mo, thanks for the belt storage idea. It makes sense to leave the heaviest clothes in CA. Alexandra, I'm glad I'm not the only one who tries to launder as infrequently as possible. And if I sewed and knit my wardrobe, I'm sure it would be much much smaller.

Suz, I wish I could rotate too, especially during our long hot summers when all of my lovely wools just rub it in! lol I do have a generously sized wardrobe, which is why I'm taking a shopping break. There are a few pieces in there that are on parole so to speak, but most of them I like too much to purge, and I don't find it overwhelming, though Mo's post running the numbers made me realise my blouse quantity is overkill (I'm at 46 woven shirts :o). Except that I really like have so many different colour and fabric options! It's funny: in most of my life I prefer to have the minimum necessary and keep things simple/more minimalist, but all of that goes out the window in my closet and on my bookshelves. If I end up moving into a smaller place, though, I'll definitely downsize: I prefer to not have more clothes than I can store without too much effort.

Lisa that sounds like a good approach! So there are pigeon holes on the side of the box or am I not visualising correctly? Mine are folded so they sit side by side in the box a bit like file folders. I can see them all from a birds eye view of the box.

Karymk, being on a small budget does it have its advantages re: figuring out how to avoid needing to buy from the Container Store! I covered the boxes that sit in the middle with brown packaging paper, and then last Christmas my mom wrapped my presents in the sweetest woodland paper, so I saved it and added bits of it to the fronts of the boxes. Everything's held up well over the past couple of years I've been using them & it's very easy to pull the boxes out drawer like.

Rachylou, I have see your pics and I was amazed at how many clothes you fit in that space! I do have very strong colour leanings. My favourite colour is actually the muted blue-green family (from teals to seafoams, as my walls make clear), but it's more rare in the thrift stores, so doesn't show up as much in my general closet.

Gracie, I wouldn't be able to reach a higher shelf! So it'd have to be for deep storage, and honestly I don't have much other stuff in my life to store. I do think a shoe rack would be useful, but since my shoes just fit on the floor, not worth the money at the moment. Maybe I'll come across one thrifting though. As far as the piles...I just brace one hand against whichever clothes are on top and it slides out pretty easily. Putting it back does require me to take off the top clothes, so sometimes I just put it back on top regardless of colour and then rearrange a few days later when I'm in the mood.

OK, I'm back with a pic. I like how yours and Mo's are so organized and with so many hangers. Mine looks empty next to yours.

My one dress is a knit so it's folded - on the right side of the middle shelf. Two gray cardigans are missing from this picture because they're sitting in the laundry hamper waiting to be washed.

My running gear and undergarments reside in the dresser (no pic). Shoes live downstairs.

I love closet posts – yours is beautiful and so organized. I, too, want to fit more stuff in there... let's see, I'd add one top shelf to each closet as there's plenty of room for more stuff, and a half shelf above your shoes for more shoes! Thanks for sharing your photos and your organization method. I know I could not handle the folded clothes piled that high as I'd have to take them all out, choose, rearrange and restock, so *my hat off to you* for keeping everything tidy.

Lol. E, you've seen my wardrobe storage pic, right? I'm telling you, my first thought was: Oh, I could cram a lot more in E's closet. Hahaha! Anyways, back on track: it's so interesting to see the bird's eye view, no? I get a real gestalt impression of dusky pinks and blues, with some forays into the red zone. You definitely have "leanings."

I love peeking into other people's closets, so when I was putting away laundry yesterday I decided to take a few pics of my own. It's definitely tidiest right after I do laundry, but it stays fairly neat the rest of the time.

I'm lucky enough to have two closets: the first is a hanging rod that I've added another rod to and the second is full of shelves. That one takes up the wall space that would otherwise be devoted to a dresser, so I've used a combination of shoe boxes and thrifted baskets to make 'drawers'. I actually really love shelves vs the dresser because it's much easier to see my sweaters & trousers this way!

The very top shelf has crafty stuff, so not relevant.
The next one down is where the clothes start. :) I fold all of my knitwear so it doesn't stretch out on hangers and have it sorted into non-wool cardigans, wool cardigans, and jumpers/pullovers (mainly wool). The trousers also get folded, because they don't seem to mind and it frees up space in the hanging closet. They're in two piles: jeans style cuts (the colourful one) and non-jeans style cut & shorts. Next shelf has my summer hats, a basket of belts, and the box and other basket hold non clothing stuff. The next shelf hold pjs, undies, layering tees and camis (which are a little too tightly stuffed in their box; I probably need to do a ruthless cull at the end of this f/w when I've seen what gets worn), socks, tights, and winter hats/gloves/etc. Final shelf is mainly bedding but the two boxes hold my scarves: the small one has the silk scarves, the large one the 'pashmina' style ones. I sort all my clothes by shade from light to dark, so that's what the boxes and piles reflect! Finally my shoes are on the floor.

My regular closet has dresses to the left (you can barely see them, the disadvantage of these doors is the pockets of space at either end), blouses across the top from light to dark (I don't sort by sleeve length), and the bottom rack is split between skirts and jackets (the topper variety that you'd wear indoors vs the outwear ones, which are in a hall closet). Everything's sorted light to dark again, although now that's cooled off I'm tempted to switch the blouses from dark to light so my s/s ones aren't so prominent! On the shelf up top are my bags and jewelery. The only non-clothes thing is this closet is my travel backpack, which tucks nicely into the right corner. I keep all of my clothes in my closets year round; I love the idea of seasonal switching but I don't have much storage space other than the closets so it's just simpler for me to leave everything be. I do usually rearrange the piles/boxes/hangers so that the more relevant clothes are in the center and easiest to access. I haven't done so yet because we're still very much in transitional weather.

As you can see, I'm pretty much at my limit in most of my clothing categories: when I start shopping again in a couple of months it'll have to be a strict one in/one out policy, because there's no more space! That will certainly make me even pickier. The dress section is the only one with plenty of breathing room and I'd like to keep it that way. Also, I clearly have way more tops than bottoms in my wardrobe: that's where I like my variety.

I keep a valet hook on each closet: the one with the hanger is for whatever coat/jacket I'm wearing that day & the one on the other closet is for airing my clothes overnight before I decide if they need washing. When I change into pjs, whatever I was wearing gets turned inside out and hung/draped over the hook. In the morning whatever's on the hook gets inspected and either thrown in the hamper or put back in the closet. I know washing habits vary widely: my general philosophy is to wash undies every wearing, but everything else only gets washed if it's smelly or I spilled something on it. I want my clothes to last as long as possible so I figure the less wear and tear in the wash the better. I do wash everything, even wool and silk, at home in a front loading washer with a hand wash setting rather than dry clean, both for budget issues and environmental concerns. I've never had any problems, but then if I did accidentally ruin something, at least I'd only be out $3-$4, which probably makes me more adventurous. I air dry almost everything too.

It's funny, I feel like I know my closet contents fairly well, but looking at these photos showed me a couple of surprises. First, all of my jackets are neutrals (except a burgundy one, which you can barely see)!!! Lovely neutrals true, and at least they're different shapes, but I definitely don't need any more neutral jackets. hehe I struggle with incorporating jackets as toppers vs cardigans and I always assumed it was because of fit issues, but now I wonder if part of the issue isn't about the greater colour range my cardigan collection gives me. Secondly, I have enough shoes! Until about 18 months ago I really struggled with shoes, so I've gotten in the habit of thinking of myself as needing shoes, but now I have quite a well rounded collection. They are all neutral, so I suppose there'd be space for a colourful addition or two down the line, but other than that I'm set. This thrills me, since I don't expect to be able to devote much money to shoes in the future, so it's reassuring to know I won't literally need to get more than maybe one replacement pair a year. It's interesting that I see different things in looking at the photos than in looking at the closets themselves!

If anyone else wants to share closet pics or organisation systems, I'd love to see them. I've got most of my approach down, but I'm still trying to figure out belts & scarves! The basket and boxes are fairly new, so I'm hoping they'll work better than some of my past approaches.
