Cynthia, drawers are OK as long as everything is stored in a single row like books on a shelf. Otherwise I agree they can be messy and things get lost.

That makes sense April. I have lots of open shelving in my dining room, and that gets dusty. I'm not sure my wardrobe if my wardrobe needs a dust. Like Aileen mine is pretty messy. It isn't really the clothes though, but everything else - heaters, suitcases, archive boxes! A friend who has helping me tidy a bit says we really don't have more stuff than other people, but we just don't have a shed! (or a basement or attic, since these are not common in Australia).

When I had small, non-walk-in closets of the rod-with-one-shelf-above type, I never worried about dust and don't remember noticing much either. This closet-as-a-small-room thing just seems like a whole different ballgame.

Anne, I have what is an original 50 YO closet in a ranch style house. It is not a walk-in. It is about 9 feet long with a rod spanning the length, and two shelves above it. The high shelf is difficult to access. I have to use a step stool to reach anything on the top shelf. Mostly I store sweaters and handbags on the shelves, but also a few sweatshirts and fleece shirts. For the first five years we lived in this house, my husband and I shared this closet, then we remodeled and added another closet. He moved his clothes into the new closet. We each have our own chest of drawers, and also share a dresser. I store tees, turtlenecks, underwear, socks, pjs, shorts, and jeans in the drawers. Except immediately after our remodel, 17 years ago, I have never dusted anything in the closet! I'd post a picture but I don't want everyone to see how messy I am.

Yes, I agree with RL. Where there is a ton of shelving, someone has watched a lot of HGTV and then gone mad with a closet designer.

And unless that person lives at Downton Abbey, that person has forgotten that s/he is going to have to stand on a stepladder with a Swiffer and dust every inch of every shelf on a regular basis.

This thread raises a question that I have been meaning to ask for awhile.

A relative, while I was admiring the amount of storage in her new house, said "yes but the wardrobes have no shelves".

I was surprised, because no house I've even lived in had any shelves in the standard built in wardrobes. Always just one shelf with the rail hanging under it. I've always had separate chest of drawers, usually in the actual bedroom, though once I fit it under the hanging clothes

Clearly MsMary's and yours, April's are big and custom made etc but in a normal average house in the US, would you have shelves?

Interesting - I have everything on open shelving or hanging (with limited exceptions, such as lingerie and cardigans), which I prefer because I like to see everything and remind myself of what I have . . .

I hate drawers for clothes. I always have to unpack the entire contents to find one stupid thing I want to wear. When we build our little house, I will have no drawers. Shelves, yes.

Also? Sunshine? Will have open shelves, lots of them, with only a few things on each, and lots of hangers. Because he just digs and tumbles things and leaves them that way if it's in drawers or lots of things on one shelf. And I have to clean it up because he "can't find anything". Well of course you can't, Dingdong, you just turned it into a tangled heaping pile.

A great tip. My closet is 3-sided and has a closet rod and shelf on each side. I keep the bulk of my wardrobe in the closet and only my loungewear, thermals, undergarments and socks, and gym clothes in drawers outside of the closet.

My closet is all open (wire) shelving, and I've never noticed a dust issue! Either everything I own is in fairly heavy rotation, or it all just falls through the wires.

Lol, April. This reminds me of focaccia. Focaccia hates me. Once I had a rack that was perfectly fine, just standing there. Then it threw itself over and dumped all the focaccia on the floor. It's very rude!

I kind of hate drawers too, Diana, because I lack the discipline to go through them carefully and ALWAYS end up rooting around and making a mess.

There is a rogue drawer in my closet right now that will not stay closed no matter what I do. It's not over-filled; it's not being forced open by the contents of the one below it.

It just keeps popping open, sometimes after TEN MINUTES of staying closed.

It's like my closet is sticking its tongue out at me: "Nanny nanny boo boo!"

My ideal solution is cabinets with shelves inside, or built in shelving with doors. That way I open the door and easily see everything, but they don't gather dust. I hate drawers as either they are too shallow to hold anything or else too deep to be able to see/find anything.

I'm one of those people who needs all open shelving - because if I see it, I'll use it and if I don't, I won't. My mum 'gave me' open shelving in her kitchen redo - she also bought me a bag of hand milled cornflour, lol, to make something with..hint hint.

But then I'm a professional baker. I don't think 'normal' people will appreciate open storage in their lives. Too chaotic, as well as for the reasons you mention (dirt and grease).

Also, I want to say S hooks for hanging pots and pans drive me nuts. The hook always falls off when you go for a pan!

If you inherited a closet that is heavy on open shelving as I did (you can see my photos on Ms Mary's thread, here) my suggestion is: use the shelves for the items you wear or carry all the time. Put everything else in your drawers. Items that sit on open shelves will collect dust if they are not in heavy rotation, so you don't want to use open shelving for long-term storage.

It's just like your kitchen. You don't want to use one of those pot-hanging contraptions (or open shelving!) near where you cook, except for the pots you use all the time, or your pots will become furred with kitchen grease and dust. It works in restaurants because those pots and pants are in constant use; at home, think carefully before installing open storage.
