Oh, thank you Claire! You are a sweetheart. I appreciate the sentiments because I am working to get the story and ideas that are expressed on my blog out to a wider audience (yoo hoo, editors at NY publishing houses!). Hearing that it resonates with you helps a lot.

Hi Laura! Great article. I'm still not sure where my sweet spot is in regard to number of clothing items, but I'm trying to at least do one in one out. I'll give myself a little more room to expand with summer items, because summer is my dominate season.

BTW, I followed the link at the bottom of your article to thehouseover, and read the ENTIRE thing. http://lauratiebert.com/ I'm very impressed, and I think there are a lot of people out there who have had a similar experience--they just aren't transparent about it. Or maybe that's just not the kind of thing you strike up a conversation about while watching your kid's game. Anyhow, thanks for making your story available for others, and good luck with your book!

Oh Caro, jewelry!! I am guilty as charged in that department. I actually have earrings from 1985 in my jewelry box They should go in my sentimental box but they are so tiny that I haven't been forced by space needs to purge.

We all have our little closet foibles, don't we?

Like Janet, I have purged heavily in some areas to bulk up other areas. I am not much of a dress gal, but adore jeans and trousers, so those have bulked up as I purged my dresses. I do try to keep a balance of items for the same use, ie I cannot equally bulk up blazers and cardigans as both of those are toppers to me, so when I purge/buy new, it's to replace one from either of these categories. I do the same with bottoms (jeans/trousers) and layering items (knits/shirts/blouses). This has helped me keep the overall numbers in my closet around the same, while allowing me some flexibility to favor one item over another (maybe it's blazer season one year and cardigan season the next year.)

I have not tried one in, one out. Rather I go through stages where I purge, then buy. I would like to one day have the one in, one out discipline however.

Good job on the article!

This is a wonderful article, Laura. You are a gifted writer that can hone your message to just the right amount for the reader to take in.
I want to be more disciplined about this. It especially helps me to be a picky shopper because I usually don't want to get rid of anything enough to buy the replacement, but my whole wardrobe is only about 3 years old and most of that worn only seasonally. I want to always replace items with something of better quality and style and have the patience not to settle.

Great reminder Laura. I don't have problems with clothes but tend to keep accessories. This past weekend I've let go of 5 bags & lots of jewellery I haven't used for ages - it feels so good & I can "see" the pieces I love more clearly.

Good article!

For me, one-in-one-out needs to be flexible. I've gotten rid of a lot of skirts and dresses over the last year or so, but have gained jeans and jackets, which are far more practical for my life, and I wear them more. So as long as the balance in one's closet remains usable for the individual's lifestyle, I can't see much use in being strict about a-shirt-for-a-shirt.

Yes, Suz - it's interesting that you want the flexibility to swap a sweater for a dress. Some people adhere to replacing a blouse with a blouse, skirt with a skirt, and so on. I am more of your mindset. Sometimes I've had a lot more dresses in my closet, for example. Right now I have more tops and jeans taking up that space. I like to keep things fluid!

Doing this loosely works as well as strictly, I think. Sometimes I purge a bag of clothes to donate, and then I have a pile of empty hangers. My goal? Not to buy so many more things that I need to also buy more hangers

Great article, Laura! And a good reminder, too. I think I'm just about ready to start this. My first year and a half on YLF I was just building a wardrobe from scratch. Even during that period I purged like crazy, as I tried to refine my style goals.

Partly as a result of constant editing and partly as a result of not yet having found perfect pieces, I'm still facing some glaring wardrobe holes, even after all this time. Yet I still may be ready to do one-in/ one-out if I do it loosely -- i.e. I buy a dress but purge a sweater.

Great article, and great advice Laura! I love the one I one out rule, I usually stick to it, and often find myself purging more that one item. Once my wardrobe gets to that perfect place, I will definitely keep at it to keep the "homeostasis".

Nice article! I like the idea of one in one out but have a tendency to get several things before or after purging several thing as opposed to thinking this item replaces that item. Also, I have a bunch of not quite perfect placeholder type items so it isnt hard to justify "upgrading" them. I look forward to having a more curated closet one day and focusing on these types of articles are the way to get there!

ETA: I just perused a few of your other articles and really enjoyed them as well

I have been doing this for a while now. I do it in both directions. Sometimes I wait to purge the old item until a new one comes along. I got a new off white loose dolman sleeve sweater. So out goes the snug, too short funnel neck off white sweater. And sometimes I purge the ill fitting item first and then search for it's replacement. Got rid of too low rise jeans early last year, been searching for skinny BF's to replace them ever since!
I realized what amount of clothing seems right for me and now aim to stay within that amount, give or take a few items. It's working great for me, and helps to keep new purchases under control, which keeps my closet updating in a gradual, controlled way. I'm loving it!

This is such great advice, Laura, and something I needed to hear! I've been a "one in, one out" person for a long time, but somehow gently let that go and my closet is a bit "tight" right now. I love your discussion of the "clothes collector" vs. the "functioning wardrobe," because that's giving respect to the clothes you purchase, love and wear. By reminding ourselves of this, we look at our closet space as something very special. Thanks for writing such a terrific article.
