Good luck on the closet! I have done a couple of purges since joining and there is another one coming soon.
I did much better on the second one because of such wonderful wisdom on YLF. I sorted first on the items I know I love and wear frequently. That part is easy. I then did capsules to see if I could work with the wannabees. I had a huge toss/donate pile.
The hardest part for me was, and still is - donating/ tossing items that haven't had much wear. I am worried about waste, what if I change my mind etc.
Next go I will use the idea of an aspirational look. It might even be helpful to snip a few photos of those looks and have them in the closet. This way you can decide not to make do and just keep the items that truly work.
Have fun!

Good luck with your closet. Some great ideas here already. I think it is helpful to identify the items you love to wear and then assess why you like them the best (color, fit, fabric, etc) this way you know what to look for in the future. Also when I purge, one thing I ask myself is (for item in question) would I like to wear this or (for item I love) this favorite one. This helps me get over the hump of 'meh' items (items that are in fine shape but just don't move me anymore).

Good luck! I hope you end up with a beautifully functional closet that makes you very happy. It's so paradoxical how removing some items from a closet can make it feel like I have more to wear!

Good luck! And I hope your husband is doing OK now.

No words of wisdom except that if you wear something and it feels "off" all day, it is suspect. When that happens to me I put the item aside and, when I have time, try it with everything I can think of to see if I can make it feel fab. If I can't, then it goes.

Sounds like a great plan, Nancy.

How about doing that exercise where Angie asks you to describe your current style and your aspirational style? I find this one a particularly great one to return to. I was fascinated by the answer I gave way back when -- and now I'm trying to work out what I'd say now. Did I achieve my aspirations? Where do I want to go next?

Another idea is to set aside all the things you really don't care for. If it doesn't fit right, bothers you each time you wear it, feels as if it is wearing you, or just bores the life out of you, maybe it's time to put it in a donation bag or at least a holding zone?

One of the greatest helps for closet evaluation that I've learned here is making capsules. It can be time consuming trying on combinations to be sure that they work.

Good advice, Caro. I think focusing on how I want to look is a great starting point. Lately, I've been feeling frustrated with some of the more modern classic pieces in my closet and want to find out how to incorporate them in ways that make me happy.

Mo, I think I'm going to start by pulling out my absolute favorites and workhorse pieces, see what's there and how it works together, and then go in and tackle the rest. I think it's always best to identify what IS working before you try to find out what isn't!

Angie's posts are the best - lots of info that I keep coming back to when I'm doing a sort.

I think one of the biggest things for me was working out HOW I wanted to look - that made it easier to say no to things that didn't fit with my overall concept. The other thing, which aligns with the previous point, is to pick out a few favourite outfits - things you always feel great in - & try to analyse why you like them - then look for those elements in other items & try to incorporate them into outfits. Have fun

It's been three years this month since I joined YLF. Time flies! I've learned so much from Angie and all you fashionable ladies, and my closet has never looked better. But….it's gotten a little jumbled and crowded over the last 6-12 months, and it's time to reevaluate.

February is usually my time to take a good look at my closet, but this year needs an especially critical evaluation for two major reasons:

1) I've done a lot of emotional/habitual shopping over the past two years as DH has been in and out of the hospital. I developed some bad online browsing/shopping habits as I sat around in waiting rooms, and made some impulsive shopping mistakes. It's time to get a handle on what is working and what isn't in my closet so I can be more focused going forward. I still don't have the wardrobe cohesion that I'd like to have, but I feel it's within reach.

2) My color analysis at the end of last summer really threw me a curveball in that the low-contrast soft colors I thought worked best for me really didn't! I've been working to incorporate more bright and clear colors and bright neutrals (eggshell and dove grey are two I've discovered) over the past six months, but I'm still unsure about how all the colors in my closet work together.

I'm re-reading Angie's posts on closet evaluations, but I'm totally open to any other words of wisdom. Wish me luck!

(Once I get myself sorted out I hope to be participating in the forum more.)
