Congrats on a successful closet edit and good use of some jet lag! :)

I'd hold on the moto's, it's a classic style that will always come back around. I'm in a similar position, but with denim jackets. I don't wear mine often, but they are so hard to find the "right" fit, so I keep them from season to season. Even if they only get worn 1-2 times a year right now. The same for a pair of perfectly fitting knee high boots. They are unicorns that once again I rarely wear right now, but fit perfectly so I won't edit them out.

Peri & Jenni - same here with wedding dress! My only daugher has a June 2026 wedding date and will not be wearing my dress. However, she is using some of the lace from the dress to add to her bouquet. There is a new trend where I live - southern US - brides are restyling mom's wedding dress to wear for night before at rehearsal or a reception dress -typically short dresses.
Janet - thank you for the post and motivation to get started on major edit!

I have not edited mine either Peri after 39 years. One daughter married and did not want to wear it and the other will not either. It’s very 80s, Princess Diana-like and greyed in colour. I have been advised to wash in the bath with Sunlight soap and if it comes out OK I would consider a vintage store donation but ask them first if they wanted it. I’m too lazy to try the bath wash thing just yet.

I feel like one is on the horizon but so far I'm not motivated to do it! But one thing I've been thinking about the past few days...why, why, why am I still...42 years later!!!...storing my wedding dress? I don't have a daughter and if I did the chances that she would want to wear it are 0.01 percent as far as I can tell. I have never IRL known anyone whose daughter wore their wedding dress. Such a myth! And though I dearly love my DH, I've lost all sentiment towards that dress. I think the real reason is that I've forgotten it's there in a box in the back of a storage closet for the past 40 years we've been in this house.

So...what does one do with an old wedding dress? Is there a donations place for it or a way to sell it? Curious if anyone has ever successfully off-loaded one.

It’s so satisfying to do a wardrobe edit. I cleared out my holding zone mostly to charity shops and friends. I am determined to get rid of stuff that I’ve kept “for just in case “ I got rid of a lot of dresses as I never wear them I also got rid off most of my skinny jeans. I also got rid of at least 10 pairs of shoes mostly never worn. It got very cold recently in Dublin and I found flared jeans too cold to wear so I was glad of my skinnies to keep me warm so I was glad I hadn’t donated them all.

Good job, Janet!
I am nodding along with you regarding the prints and the tight color palette. I only have a handful of prints at the moment, and my wardrobe is mostly made up of neutrals with a bit of red ( I consider it a neutral), but I am perfectly happy this way.
I've had a few different color moto jackets in the past. They were pleather, so they did not hold up. But I have a black, geunine leather moto jacket that I kept and plan to hold on to for the foreseeable future. I gave it a little TLC last winter - it is now in good shape, with buttery leather that can only be achieved through age. It is on the shorter side, and I think it works really well with the wide pants that are currently in style.
I do a rolling edit, so it is constant work. But your post reminded me of the lingerie and sock drawers, which can use an edit. My real issue at the moment is the loungewear.I seem to have too many sweatshirts but not enough bottoms, and it's all a bit mismatched.I need to spend some time clearing out the really worn-out ones and at least try to come up with a few combos that I fall back on.

I did better organize my bags and shoes so I can see everything but my sandals and that has helped with shopping mistakes. Like I could quickly pull out everything brown and assess gaps. Before I had everything out of season tucked into the fabric bags they came with.

Interesting to note, I also just returned from Spain and Portugal, was experiencing jet lag, the weather at home was dreary (we returned home to snow), so I started a closet edit!
For me, though, it all came about because during our travels I wore my standard travel uniform of slim pants with tunic tops, and I realized I’m finally really, really tired of that silhouette. So I didn’t get rid of my slim pants, but my tunics either landed in the donate pile or the holding zone. While I was at it, I got rid of most of my skinny jeans, too. Next up, I’m going back through my closet and editing out the things in my holding zone. I have things in the holding zone that haven’t seen the light of day in years!

Sorry that I keep thinking about myself when I read these type of threads! I am very happy that you found such a productive use of your jet-lag time! It makes me think you must have a lot of storage space and a big lingerie drawer! I ended up only keeping perhaps two of my mother’s slips because they are beautiful vintage ones. They don’t fit me but my daughters are slimmer than me and one loves dress-ups so I will keep for now. It’s funny to think back how much women used to wear slips. I also have at least 2 pairs of Mum’s pantihose and she died 26 years ago! They are grey in colour and I wear less than once a year but useful then. I think maybe my preferences for certain prints don’t change much over time… but I am still out of love with my faux fur vest and don’t understand that, I used to adore that thing, maybe I will again.

Oh the slip and tights problem! I need to edit out the ones I can let go in both categories. I can't remember the last time I wore a slip, but I do have a beautiful bias cut one that I know I'll keep, because you never know...

Moto jackets are a classic, but I'm ready to let go of my last one. Honestly I never wore mine very much anyway. It's a beautiful piece, but it's not something that I reach for now, or feel I will in future, so it should go.

Sounds like a satisfying and successful edit. I have two conflicting feelings about getting rid of things I am no longer in the mood for these days. On the one hand, donating (or selling) them when they are still in good condition will extend their lives much more than waiting until they are further away from current. On the other, I have found that almost everything that started out as a good quality piece eventually cycles back into trend cycle and/or my mood cycle. I would definitely hold on to things like moto jackets that I like in principle even if I am not ready to wear right now.
On my third hand, I hear you about florals - I am much more in the mood for stripes lately.

Jenava, great to see you! I hear you about the sadness when beloved items no longer fit. I have a couple of pairs of jeans now that I set aside because they were boyfriend-loose when I bought them a couple of months ago — they’re now very loose! I think still wearable in the right mood and outfit but I’m not sure so I’ve put them at the bottom of the stack.

Chris, I’m glad you could get your top back! I had a few older long tops that worked better with lower-rise and skinnies shortened to hip length to wear with more current pants and it worked quite well.

Edits can be so satisfying and the insights that accompany them so interesting. I just did an edit while bringing out fall clothes, and let go of quite a few long patterned tops that went with skinny jeans I don’t wear anymore. The next day, I bought some burgundy corduroy wide legs and realized one of the floral tops was too hastily discarded, because I love the colors which could have possibly been good with the burgundy. I went to the thrift store and found my top on the rack, and bought it back for $4.75. It felt like such a triumph! I’m still not sure it will work with the new pants, but I feel like I shouldn’t have let go of something that I still felt so much fondness for.

Oof, I need to do a closet clean out. I did a good edit in early October. I changed sizes by 2 sizes but know I may very well return to my old size in the next few years. I was pretty down about having not being able to wear some key pieces over summer and having to buy replacements (some of which I don't like as well). But my lingerie drawers, socks, and lounge wear - not to mention handbags and husband's side of the closet - need a good edit. I've sent a few items to thread up so it's nice to have at least a little bit to show for it. Although I probably broke even at the end of things.

I've gone overboard on sweaters. I reminded myself in October that I didn't need any more! But I've bought 3.

I hear you on the patterns. I don't think I've fallen out with any specific print. But I've always had a hard time finding prints that capture my eye. I've always enjoyed a good plaid, though! Strangely, I do not own much (any?) currently...

My discovery of custom sewing clothes that fit my shape has turned me off a lot of shopping. Although I have had to replace my entire jeans/most of my trousers. A couple I've altered. But sometimes the way they are constructed doesn't allow for enough of a change in size. Sewing from scratch is an extremely slow process (particularly since Im still learning and only have about 5 hours a week to dedicate to it).

I do a rolling edit as I put stuff away to make sure I am not keeping things that are too worn. I don’t do current whim driven edits. I think those lead to a lot of unnecessary closet churn. Today I am wearing some new Saint and Sofia tan culottes and they prompted me to pull out a tee and short swacket bought when I had a lot of camel pieces. If I had announced that I was over camel and purged the remaining bits and pieces I would’ve wasted the opportunity to wear them. Similarly, I kept a lot of dark brown and snake print accessories and was able to spin brown and snake back up by just adding a bag or two and some shoes.

Sounds a productive time!

I agree that motos are a classic style -
And one that will cycle back in. I would keep anything that you like.

Patterns are a tricky one - I sometimes can’t ascertain why I like or don’t like one, or why I go off them. But I do find once I am off them I don’t really change my mind -as compared to say a pair of sandals that I am tired of when after a break I may decide I like them again.

I can see chocolate working for you but you have to love it. Interested to see how you pursue this colour.

Yay for a big edit! I did one this autumn, too, and had already done one in the spring and the previous autumn. I let go of bags of stuff. Most well-worn or not fitting and some just out of favour. It was a relief to let go of what wasn't working any more. No need to hang on to stuff that we don't truly love.

I'd say do your summer edit next spring. You'll have a clearer sense of your size, your preferences, and what is interesting you for the year ahead then. I often do two mini-edits -- at end of season I get rid of all the really worn or badly fitting stuff and then at beginning of season I evaluate the rest.

I have kept my moto. I don't wear it much but I still really love it and hope to find occasions for it. I also kept my vintage leather trench.

It’s so satisfying to get a good wardrobe edit done.
I do mine mostly when switching seasons. But probably will have to do another due to a weight gain that I can’t shake off. Maybe it’s time to accept that I’m now a size bigger and evaluate fit of some of my denim. Feels like a defeat.

Jet lag comes in handy :)

WOOOHOOO! Well done, Janet! Very productive wardrobe and reviewing!

My 2 cents:

- Keep layering items for under jackets. You will miss them when they go. Glad you're keeping both burgundy sweaters.

- Welcome to Team Mostly Stripes and Plaids. I never tire of them either! I’ve added horse prints because ….I’m horsie. I tend to love floral patterns in dresses and blouses in the Summer! And I adore dots in small doses.

- I have two moto jackets and love them! The peachy-toffee one is a workhorse!! Iconic classics are brilliant for good reason. Wear your beautiful motos!!! NOW :)

- Personally, I find short vests much easier to wear than long ones. I hear you!

- I'm encouraging the addition of dark brown to your wardrobe. It will work VERY well with what you have. It’s a good way to refresh.

- An excellent feeling to have cleared out the basics drawer! Make sure you have what you need, though. Refresh as needed.

Recently, I’ve passed on a polyester blouse I’ve had for years that no longer felt right. Sleeves are too big and annoying. Can't pick up blind Sam easily. All my blouses are classic and silk - and I’d like to keep it that way. I have one Ecovero blouse - viscose, so natural - and that’s great too. Shirts are all cotton. I’m sticking to that.

I've passed on three pairs of old jeans that have had their day. I've replaced two of them.

Also highly recommend keeping a constantly updated digital representation of your wardrobe. I’ve found it invaluable on every organizational and thoughtful shopping level. You see what you have when you’ve swapped out your seasons, for example. Makes shopping off-season easier. I know it's an initial slog though :(

Good for you, getting into those far corners, Janet. I can relate to the slip situation, although I do wear slips whenever I wear dresses and like to have the right lengths on hand. But I had some that were hand-me-downs from my mother, too, and last time I edited that drawer, I was able to reclaim a lot of space.

I've been putting things in bags to donate as I come across them. One recent item I put in the bag was an off-white mock turtleneck textured top that I have worn as a layering piece under cardigans. I thought the mock neck felt too tight last time I wore it. Then I just got a cardigan that I want to layer just that shade of white underneath. So out comes the mock turtleneck!

I get rid of trendy things when I no longer like them, but tend to hold onto basics a long time. Maybe too long!

I finally am opening up to the idea that I can and should replace some of these when they no longer feel/look fresh. In the corner of this room is a bag with a black crew neck sweatshirt, a teal turtleneck, and a maroon turtleneck for giveaway. The frugal part of me wants to save them, but I know I will do better getting some replacements.

I love a good overall review and edit. I nodded my head along with the lingerie/slip situation - same with a bag of pantyhose (eek) I have kept but not worn in almost a decade now I bet. Also know all about forgetting things I've bought off/end season , and tightening up on prints and excess summer stuff. I did all of this last year - and while I was horrified at the amount of clothing I passed along , it felt really great to not have so much .It also felt really great to be in charge of my own wardrobe and let go of guilt/indecision /etc that went along with keeping things I didn't wear. It restored my confidence in knowing what was right for me.

Funny, I have been wishing lately that I had a moto jacket that I could pull out again - as I agree they *do* look fresh and interesting again. I passed on most of my leather jackets over the past few years as they were too fitted for current silhouettes. It's not inconceivable that I buy another one but it will likely be more oversized/looser and maybe pre-loved. I have a vision of something less precious looking and think I could find it on the second hand market. Yea, sure Lisa.
