Jessikams, I agree, that's really good advice.

Yesterday during my intermittent cleanout, I decided to try on these jeans, which have been in and out of my donate pile and holding zone. I struggle to style them because they feel summery but I barely ever wear jeans in summer. In the past, I have tried them with booties that "close the gap" but that always feels too heavy and never seems to work. Well, yesterday I just put them on with a white shirt, and these silver sneakers that I got just a couple of weeks ago and have already become workhorses. Lo and behold, all of a sudden I felt like these jeans became more wearable. Somehow lighter footwear seems to work, and I don't feel like I'm trying to force these jeans into being something they're not. LOL So they're going back in my closet and I'll try to wear them in the next couple of weeks. If I chicken out again, they're gone. :-)

I also enjoy that type of post and hope to do one later.
For now I can echo what Angie has said before: it’s good to try styling things in different ways before donating. I had 2 pairs of jeans that I thought I would donate. But I tried them with many different shoes today and found some surprising, interesting combos. Will give them another chance and see if I wear them more.
On the other hand I also tried on a pair of pretty blue metallic leggings, intending to style with shoes. But just pulling them on told me WOW these don’t fit at all!! It’s possible I bought them without trying them on, thinking “leggings are stretchy, who cares?” Well, the waistband on these is really super tight elastic. Into the pile they go.

I had this top custom made with short sleeves a few years ago.
I think I've worn it three times.
The slit in front was just a little too high, and it was emotionally uncomfortable, so I never wore it even though I wanted to.
It is in the donate pile now

I did a big edit in Sept. before we put our house on the mkt. Now that the weather is cooler, I'm reconsidering some dresses that I kept in the first edit. They all work for fall but for the past 2-3 years, I've only worn them a few times each. This year I'm going to put them front and center and see if they deserve a place in my closet. I think I have too many fall outfits that I actually prefer to wear.

My apologies. No pictures, but I can help you with my rationale.

My primary criteria was fit. As part of my closet edit, I tried on every single garment in defined categories and assessed it for fit on my present body. Today's body.

The second criteria was color. Evidently, I go through color phases. I went through a red phase maybe 20 years ago. I still have remnant red items that do not coordinate with any other items in my wardrobe. These items stick out like a sore thumb in my wardrobe and are NEVER, EVER worn. Yet I couldn't seem to part with them. Twenty years!

I have multiple color capsules that I am assessing as part of the October purge. Red and yellow stand out. Grey is also being purged because it is not flattering on me and I don't love it any more. Charcoal is staying.

Finally, condition. I don't have a lot of worn clothing items, but I do have a few (shoes, knits). I am using the motivation from the Challenge to motivate myself to finally get rid of those items that are worn out. I intend to replace all of the items in this category with new items. One pair of shoes out, one pair of shoes in the same category in.

The clothes edit is still in process, as im taking advantage of the nice weather instead of being inside...but i did do transitional shoes a couple weeks ago.
I only wear them 2 months of year max, why did i have so many?
The Vans, i thought if they were galaxy print i may enjoy fashion sneakers. Nope. My feet looked huge, and i felt too boyish. No intention of replacing.
The black danskos. Bought cause i needed non slip shoes for job coaching. I changed jobs 2 years ago. Plus too plain for my style so never wore them otherwise. No intention of replacing.
The floral heels, new this year, went with many things, too blingy, too tight in front too loose in back to walk properly in. Even my sitting shoes need to serve me for a mile! Replaced with floral low heels (unsure about).

The gold flats. Worn out, too wide and too flat. Plus the flower things on top were just too ingenue-ish. Replaced with mustard mules.
The black trotters. Worn out, too loose in back, and the kitten heel was neither here nor there. Thought theyd substitute heels and flats, but truly did neither. Replaced with black mules.

Janet...here's what i passed on in footwear....and some of the reasons

1st Set of items finds 1-7, pumps. moved from bus casual dress code at work to casual. passing these do due to wear (1-3) and because with less need for them these are the pairs i don't feel would reach for (4-7)

sneakers finds 8-9. these are just not as comfortable as my other pairs, and so just don't get the love

boots finds 10-11.. wear and tear, love the boots in find 10 and it showed

flats finds 12-14...i just didn't wear these enough...it turns out i don't really like light colored footwear

I let go of three shell/cardigan combos. All had some wear left in them, and fit fine, and the imperfections were small (a zipper covering that didn't always lie flat, a shell neckline that didn't quite match the cardi, and was slightly unflattering.) These are all items I wore when "colorful high-hip length top with black trousers" was a FFBO for me, because I was changing careers, and my kids were still quite young, so I was building my work wardrobe on a limited budget. Fast forward 7 years, and that's a silhouette I no longer care to wear, and this edit made me realize that my style has evolved, and it was time to let those items go. It was bittersweet, because I have fond memories of the times I wore those items, but, the truth is, I no longer feel fab wearing them, and it's time for the memories to live on in pictures.

I did long-sleeve shirts and layering tops this morning.

Culled 2 out of 10 shirts, leaving 8. Both really old, thrifted, outlier colours that I don't reach for anymore. Might look for a solid white shirt as an alternative to the two going out, but not til next spring/summer.

Culled 2 out of 13 knit tops/layering sweaters. Cheap merino -- in good shape but too itchy. Would like to replace with non-itchy tops in black and navy; might look for replacement burgundy and charcoal tops as well. I'm feeling interested in knit tops for the first time in several years.

The rejects are on the right in each photo. A couple things didn't make it into the photos because they're being washed or worn. Terrible yellowy lighting in my closet!!

Well, I’ve been doing a bit of editing in the holding zone and the closet while cleaning, and I already have two bags of items for my niece to try — anything she doesn’t want will be donated.

I have two more similar size bags for donation. I’m finding some of these decisions a little painful because some were designer/not cheap items (sob, Ann Fontaine pinstripe vest that’s now at least one size too small). I’ll post some pics and reasons in another thread. This is kind of hard, but I think I will feel better when these things are gone.

I included Finds for most of the things I recently let go. Along with reasons.

Worn out and poor fit items are obvious candidates for editing. But I can be a bit more specific about the"style shift" and "just not working for me" category if you like.

With jeans, I'm getting rid of most of my low rises. I kept my Dres because the comfort factor is huge and I love them. I still have a pair of mid-rise Citizens (on their way out in the spring -- they have their uses now.) Otherwise, low waists are out. Higher waists feel more current.

Like Lisa, I'm trying to wean myself from skinnies. This is not easy given my former climate (her current climate). Even in Vancouver, I just know there will be times when they feel like the only practical choice. But I'm moving towards different cuts, so if a skinny was in question, I let it go.

For the rest, I pretty much asked myself: does this item make me happy? Does it help me make good outfits or do I always feel "off" in it?

However "nice" it is in theory, how is it working for me in fact? However much I thought I'd need it, what do I feel when I'm wearing it?

1. Kick crops -- I love how these look on others and hate them on myself. I tried, I loved in theory -- but, next!!!

2. Turtlenecks -- Angie made these a top pick last year and turtlenecks are a winter essential for me and these were in great neutrals/ colours for me. But I found them itchy and a bit on the thin side. Also the cut bothered me. I realized I wanted a snugger, more fitted look. Next!!

3. Everlane silk tops. Based on past experience I was sure these would be winners in my closet but something about them just didn't work for me. I still don't know exactly what was wrong. But I never felt good in them.

4. Kimono -- only wore it about 6 times, never felt quite right in it.

I do make intuitive calls when I'm in process. Most often in the direction of "edit it out" but occasionally in the direction of keeping something I'd been sure I'd get rid of.

I still have two or three items in my closet that I think should go. Debating those. They were pricey and I feel I haven't got enough wear from them to justify the cost. So it is harder to let go.

Janet, the plaid is certainly in trend. I’d wear them if they work well for you.

The items I have purged so far were ones I’d been considering purging for a while. Small, tight, not flattering enough, etc. But then, if I like something I keep it until it looks too worn or stretched out or it’s too big. The exception are scarves, where sometimes I let them go because either I don’t like the color on me or I’m just not feeling them.

Lisa, I need to consider carefully any of those longer tops myself. I'm not a big tunic wearer anyway, but I still have some tops that lend themselves more to the long-over-lean look that prevailed for the last many years. These days I'm feeling the look of shorter, more (gently) fitted tops.

It's going to be really hard to give up skinnies, now that I've grown accustomed to them. They work with all kinds of footwear, regardless of heel and hem length -- they can be rolled or cuffed, etc. I even picked up a pair of cheap plum plaid skinnies at the Rack not long ago, and they still have tags on. I'm not sure they were the smartest purchase in light of changing trends, but I can't help but think they'll look good with the black boots and dark tops I favor in the winter.

I don't have photos, but I can tell you the kind of things I do in my closet edits. I am not doing the September edit. I actually just do a poke through my closet frequently, to try to get rid of things I'm not wearing or don't need for specific periodic needs.

I edit out my jeans pretty frequently. Since I wear them so much in the colder months of the year, I like to be very trendy and current with them so they feel fresh. I am trying (not quite successfully) to wean myself off skinny jeans; while they are definitely the most practical for my winter purposes, the silhouette doesn't feel as fresh as it used to.

More broadly, I have been eliminating tops (both sweaters and blouses and tees) that are tunic-y or hit at low hip. Most of the time, I want to either tuck or have a cropped shape.

Exactly, Elizabeth! The numbers are impressive, but you've pinpointed exactly what helps me with my own editing processes. Because some of what I probably need to jettison -- even more than the holding zone "almosts" -- are the items you describe. Let's hear stories!

I agree, Janet. I'm far more interested in the "why" than the numbers. ESPECIALLY when it's a piece that fits, and is in good shape... what makes it not make the cut? Why is it not reached for?

If anyone is game to take the extra step in their edit to post some photos of key items you’re letting go, with explanations of why, I LOVE seeing that kind of thing. Angie’s post was hugely helpful — let’s see more! I’ll share when I do this too.
