I giggled over the alteration pile :-D

Nice work! I'm mostly just here to commiserate, because I'm about to have to tackle my mess. Were hoping to finish the house in a couple more months, and I don't want to move a bunch of stuff I won't wear/use. I'm hoping I can accomplish a ruthless edit and I'm procrastinating my butt off because it's cold and I'm basically just putting all of the clothes on at once to stay warm LOL

Thank you for some inspiration/motivation!

Your process and piles are great. I used to have a similar process, but I found that having a temporary keep and an alteration pile didn’t serve me well. When I organize I have 3 piles: Keep, pass on and pitch.
I have 4 tiers of clothing categories: dressy/event, work, weekend and cabin. Work wear may get moved to weekend as it begins to age or fall out of favor and weekend wear may be moved to cabin wear. If I take a new capsule to leave at the cabin, I will select items from there to pass on. I do not want an excess of clothing at the cabin. If my items don’t fit in the dresser drawers, then something has got to go.

This seems like a great process for tackling a closet edit. Good job for getting it done. I keep looking at my closet and thinking about it but haven't taken any action yet.

Hey, give yourself credit for making a good start. You probably have a much better idea of what is in your closet. Ask yourself, " If I were paying a mover to move across the country, would I move this?"

Great edit!

I'm with lisa p on the temporary hold pile. Doesn't work for me. I also take my Pass On's directly to where they're going or I end up digging back through them like a crazy hoarder lady.

I actually am a heartless robot. I gave away my wedding dress as soon as I got back from my honeymoon. I figured I wasn't going to wear it again. :)

This is brilliant! You've done really well. Also laughing because I am a chronic editor, too. (Never "purge" LOL). But I have not done a vigorous enough edit for the past few years because I had got to the point where I liked almost everything there. I have to get rid of some of it anyway now, I think.

Lisa P: I also haven’t had luck with alterations. Often seems to just alter the intended drape and cut of the garment so looks “off” afterward.

I have never had success with a temporary hold pile - it turns into a permanent one and I end up giving away everything in it 6 months later. Now I don't even pretend: if I don't want it right now, out it goes. Yes, I'm guilty of over-purging, but I don't regret it. It just means I am still buying the wrong things. I cannot believe how much of my wardrobe I would never buy again if it were hanging in a store right now.

I can't deal with alterations piles either. One year, I spent a ton of money having all of my best pieces (including a coat) altered after a major, major weight loss, and never wore those pieces again. Just didn't look the same .

Anyways - you must feel good after accomplishing this!

Well done! A bit of organising always makes one feel good doesn’t it.It doesn’t sound like it was too painful so I guess that you ve done this before.l did my first wardrobe edit as prescribed at the weekend but chose to tackle my daughters wardrobe rather than mine.we really enjoyed it,managed to send a whole load of stuff she’d outgrown to charity ,wrote down what her wardrobe gaps are and she told me why she wasn’t wearing certain things. For example one dress which I thought was cute on her apparently made her feel fat so I ve turned it into a skirt which she is pleased with and will hopefully now wear.I ve just got to face my wardrobe now,not so easy me thinks, but you have given me hope that it can be achieved.

Hah, I'm like you, I almost always end up passing things on instead of altering them! I have one item in my alteration pile right now, and I'm wondering if I should just let it go... I do, however, have a sentimental box. Sometimes I'm able to part with things a few years after I retire them, but some things are worth keeping for the stories they hold. I kinda wish I could be a heartless robot! :) I agree it's hard to evaluate off-season items. But I'm also not sure if end-of-season is a good time for me to evaluate. If throwing all my winter clothes in the trash could magically make it summer tomorrow, I'd do it!

Hi there,

Starting in on a closet edit using Angie's six pile method, and for my own learning (any maybe to learn from or help others), thought I'd share where I'm at.

Keep: I have plenty of keepers (a closet-full). I'll revisit the closet again towards the end of spring or possibly even summer to see if I really am loving and wearing everything in the warmer weather category. I'll do a closet review to identify gaps, with emphasis on my essentials.

Temporary Keep: Only two items here: my charcoal and white sweater dress, and a black rain coat. Both are workhorses which could do with an upgrade.

Alteration: Two items put aside here, not sure they are worth altering - both have served their purpose and are not essential items. Neither is beloved. Think I just answered that question. Moving on ...

Holding Zone: Preface: chronic over-purger here, so I was a little generous with this pile ... I have several held items, all 'okay but not great' pieces that I don't use (often at least) - some may have potential though, and I may have seasonal bias against a few of them (e.g. a lightweight plaid shirt that I might wear when its warmer). I'll do a proper try-on of these another day and may ask the forum for some feedback!

Sentimental: None. I'm a heartless robot. Actually my wedding dress is still hanging there, for 15 years now - still haven't taken it to the cleaners lol. See - heartless robot I actually do put it on sometimes to give my kids a laugh.

Pass On: Only a couple items: gray skinny jeans that I want to like but don't, a black tunic popover that was bought out of desparation for an occasion and has not been worn since, a bulky cableknit sweater that was a bad buy from day one. Buh-bye.

Next steps: closet review, and then tackle the holding pile. A bit muddled but think it will work for me - maybe holding pile items will address needs that come up in review.

Thanks for reading if you made it through!
