Great edit! I’ve had a bit of success repurposing a couple tops to my workout capsule and they are finally getting worn.

And another!

14: Black v-neck tee from Target: It's a black tee. Just a black tee. I've had it for years and it's pilling a bit. I have another plain black tee, and I don't think I actually need multiples.

But wait, there's more! I remembered a couple other things that may need to exit...

12: Teal Annie dress from MM LaFleur: Gorgeous color and construction, and the first really nice work dress I bought. Someone else's editing thread mentioned having a hard time letting go of items that led to revelations, and I think that's the case here. I like wearing lovely dresses to work, and the color is one of my favorites, but I don't like A-line skirts and I feel a little blah in this shape. Someone else should enjoy it.

13: Nude snakeprint kitten-heeled pumps from Rockport: Comfortable but a smidge large, and I easily risk kicking them off my feet when I walk if I'm not super careful. I don't want shoes I have to think hard about when I'm walking. The lining is such that inserts probably wouldn't stick, so I think that's just a no.

Thank you, torontogirl! The piece from my mom isn't particularly meaningful; she's given me other things that will absolutely stay in a sentimental place, but this one doesn't have sentiment attached, except for the feeling of wasting a thoughtful gift. But it's already wasted if it's not being worn, so I may post pictures and see if the forum can help with styling and that floppy flap, and if not... it should go to someone who will wear it.

Thanks, Angie. :) I'll enlist the help of the forum for that vest, though I'll probably wait for a bit better light to take some pictures.... it's very dark and rainy this evening (my favorite weather, but not cooperative for photos).

SarahD8, my pants capsule isn't too bad, though I'll want to find a good pair of black pants ASAP, and I have a pair of red pants coming to try on. I'm usually more excited about buying pants than tops, which has led to some lopsided ratios in my wardrobe. I can stand to lose a few. :)

Janet, definitely agree on the reworking (including tailoring) when possible... this year I had a couple of skirt waists taken in so they hit at a much better point, and it's made a huge difference. I attempted to cut a pair of not-quiet-right straight-leg jeans into shorts a couple of months ago... and took it too far. Oh well. I loved the length of a pair that you cut off a while ago (a bit below the knees, I think) and was thinking I'd try the gray jeans at that length... shorter is always an option later, longer isn't!

Sterling, thank you! I grew up as a military brat, moving every 3 months to 3 years until college, so my family constantly edited possessions.... it may come a bit easier given that history. I still have trouble with letting some things go, though.

Lucy, that's a good idea... I do use fashion tape occasionally.

Elizabeth P, cjh, and Suz, thank you!

Good job!

I'm finding that a big part of the editing process for me is considering whether I can repurpose or rework an item to work better for me. I'm thinking of shortening a couple of long tops, for example, since silhouettes are changing and I'm not wearing those longer more tunic-y lengths so much anymore. And I've released the hem on a couple of pairs of too-short jeans.

I hear you about items that were gifts from your mother. Post that vest she we can maybe help you come up with a way to use it. I have a handful of pieces that were gifts from my mom (especially those that were bought while we shopped together, which are some fun memories with her). She passed away a decade ago and I STILL have these things, but that's OK. I allot myself a little space for sentiment.

You have edited out a lot of pants, but it sounds like you wear your pants into the ground.. Is your pants capsule feeling a bit thin and in need of replenishment now?

I'm with Torontogirl. You can keep the gift from your Mum with other sentimental items. Or post it here, and we might be able to suggest a solution for that pesky flap.

Nomad, this sounds like a very well-considered edit - onwards! If the piece from your Mom is meaningful, perhaps you could consider saving it somewhere other than your closet?

Love the idea of cropping your jeans into shorts - if you like the fit around the waist and backside, it's a great solution.

Thanks for posting this challenge, Angie. At first I thought, "I've already edited a lot throughout this year... I don't have anything left to get rid of!" But as we all know, that's rarely true. Here's what's definitely and probably leaving; I'm hoping that by articulating the reasons, it'll be easier to let go of some of the things on the chopping block.

During the wear-tracking challenge last month, I let go of three items (I'm counting them because they were out the door *just* before Angie's closet edit post):

1: Slim-legged olive cargo pants from Express: I loooooved these, but they'd been worn into the ground and patched several times (with a few more holes threatening to open soon). They were also a very low rise... I used to love low rise, but I'd like closer to a mid-rise these days.

2: Dark olive shorts from Express: These were hard to let go of only because I loved the color, and I otherwise have no shorts left. But they were super low rise and large on the waist (I could shimmy out of them without unfastening if I didn't wear a belt).

3: Silver d'Orsay flats from Marc Fisher: Sob. These hurt to let go. So lovely. But they ran quite big and were uncomfortable no matter what inserts I tried in them.

Added to the out pile since Angie's challenge:

4: Black moto vest from Target: Cute and *should* fit well into my style, but I finally realized why it always looked awkward and I never reached for it. It fit well in the body, but then the shoulders were too narrow to look right on my relatively broad shoulders. Especially since it had (small) epaulets, which were then sitting awkwardly too close to my neck and too far from the edges of my actual shoulders. Off it goes.

5: Black drape back top from Karen Kane: This was chosen for me by a stylist, and I like it in theory... it's like a cowl-neck shape (which I absolutely love), but low and on the back. But the body is too billowy for my taste, there's a bar of fabric across the back of the neck that I don't think looks graceful, and the back dips *just* low enough to show my bra band. Too fussy and I never reach for it.

6: Black cropped bodycon short-sleeve mockneck: A little seasonally confused. It could make a good layering piece, but I never actually wear it that way and don't think I care to. I cheated a little with this one... I'm not actually getting *rid* of it yet. I moved it to my dance wardrobe; since I teach bellydance, midriff-baring close-fitting tops have a place in my life, so students can see what muscles I'm using. This should be good as it gets cooler in the studio over the winter.

*Probably* going... these are the things I need to muster my strength to pass on, but I think I'll get there:

7: Gray lace moto vest from INC: A gift from my mom (which is part of why it's hard to let go of), and *should* fit my style. But I can't get one of the... flaps? to lay flat, no matter how I iron or try to coax it into place. It flops over and hangs awkwardly and annoys me. I never reach for it, even though I keep telling myself I should.

8: Pinstripe ankle pants from Express: I loooove pinstripe, and the fabric feels nice, but the fit is a little awkward on me. The pockets gape open and there's a smidge of extra fabric around the seat and hips.

9: Ancient black Editor pants and blazer from Express: The first real suit I bought after college. Which was a very long time ago, as I'm around mid-career now. It's served me well and is in good shape, but the pants are super thin and the blazer shape looks a little dated to my eye. I need to finally let this one go and look for an upgrade.

10: Black skinny jeans from Express: I wear these a lot, but they're a lower rise than I want right now. They're also a bit faded, which would be fixable if the shape was right. I had an Express gift card, so ordered a higher-rise corset-laced pair to hopefully replace (corset lacing has always been one of my weaknesses... I love it as a design detail, whether it's on trend or not)... that should arrive soon so I can evaluate.

11: Black ankle pants from Express: These may stick around until I find a new go-to pair of black pants. The fit issues are similar to the pinstripe pair above, though not as pronounced.

Misc other:

I have a pair of gray skinny jeans that are a little long and a little loose around the ankle (just a little awkward for either cuffing or stuffing into boots). I already bought a different pair of higher-quality gray skinnies to replace them (yay, Poshmark). I may cut the baggier ones to crops or shorts, since I'm short on shorts now.......
