I need to do a boot edit too. I kind of dread it, because there are some I’m feeling are becoming “dated for me” and replacements are bound to be pricey. But also excited to free up some space in the closet.

Wow, nice job! I am so bad about getting rid of things that didn't get much use. I really need to be honest with myself and, instead of pretending that I will wear them, figure out why I won't and move on. I'm with you on button down shirts, I feel like I should like them but they never feel comfortable on me.

This is awesome Lisa; a wise and well-thought-out editing session. Now can you tell me how to REMEMBER all these lessons going forward? Because I seem to learn stuff and then promptly forget it lol!

I hear you too on the trendy jeans - I want to update them, but between practicality and availability of styles in the stores, I haven't found much that I love. Hopefully as the silhouette changes up more, there'll be more options.

Thank you, all, for your thoughts here. Often the benefit of writing about an edit is to solidify the results and lessons in your own mind. I found this particular edit quite helpful...likely because I was paying more attention to the "whys" and not just cold-heartedly chucking things out. I'm finishing off the edit with my boot collection today - even more inspired to get real about boots with heels. At least 3 more pair are destined for the chopping block!

You are inspirational--a no-nonsense, non-sentimental way to do it. I too tend to buy 40% off sweaters and tops at BR. As I'm bringing out my fall clothes, many items bought last year, I ask myself, what was I thinking, other than cheap? Back a decade or so, BR merino sweaters were very nice and came in lots of good colors. And they would last years.

I don't like plaid either--reminds me too much of my growing up and young adult years. I can't stand it on DH either. Although I admit I'd like a nice plaid scarf.

Congratulations on a fab edit!

Wow Lisa! For a quick edit, this seems very comprehensive. I think your reasoning is sound, and payed particular attention to what you said about shoes and handbags. I know I have too many handbags even though my collection is probably smaller than most. I am not really a handbag lover. For me they are mostly a functional item.

This is so interesting to me, Lisa. I'm totally nodding along with all your choices, even though they are almost the exact opposite of mine (I'm all about plaid, can't wear skinnies or mules to save my life, and am leaning towards a softer, less structured bag as a contrast to structured/masculine clothes). It's amazing how inividual it all is, and how clear it becomes once you articulate your own set of guidelines. I would be wooed by that skull sweater as well, but heather grey is a hard nope in my wardrobe; I always end up feeling like I'm wearing sweats.

WOOOHOOOO. Well done, Lisa p. You did GREAT.

I nodded along with every donation. Loving the reasons why here. Very helpful and honest. You soul searched and are reaping the reward. I’m proud of you :)

YES to mules looking fabulous in the Summer and updating just about anything. (I wore mine into the ground - and ruined them in Italy )

YES to wearing cuter cat-friendly loungewear at home. Make it a priority.

YES to trying to update your jeans capsule with ONE pair of trendy jeans.

YES to no more grungy plaid shirts. You like the idea of them, but they make you feel overly masculine - like denim jackets and basic V-neck pullovers. Do plaid in other kinds of silhouettes and wardrobe items.

YES to too many oversized tops. They hide your cute figure and you need a change. Mix it up - a la the new fitted striped Gap tee.

YES to realizing that you like to update your footwear very regularly. Fast churn with fewer new pairs each season is a possible solution.

YES to no more floppy bags!

Lisap, loved every word, totally entertaining and educational closet cleaning.

Some of these editing posts are just great and this one, and one by Janet are my favorites so far. I'm naturally ruthless in clearing the deck but I never ask myself WHY things didn't work out. I don't have the same items to edit but I can at least try to apply the same clarity and self examination.

Great edit, and great insights -- thank you for sharing!

I had just the opposite experience with mules -- I'm glad I only bought one inexpensive pair, because they did not end up being workhorses for me at all. I thought they might be suitably breezy in summer, but the truth is, in my climate it's either sandals with open toes, or sneakers (with no-show socks underneath). Mules end up being a very limited-wearing-season items for me. And mine stretched just enough with wear that I indeed did almost walk out of them when I wore them. Lesson learned.

Jeans editing -- I hear you. I crave something trendy, but honestly most of the trendy denim just looks really bad on me. I'll have to rely on bootcuts and classics and find other ways to inject trend into my style.

I also passed along a couple of tees that had very deep V necks. I like a deep V, but *too* deep just doesn't seem right on me anymore. And I hear you about layering under a deep V.

And the sequin top thing! I just jettisoned a black sequin tank from my holding zone because I think I wore it twice for occasions under a jacket a few years ago and held onto it thinking I would want it for the holidays, etc. Nope. Never loved it, so it's gone. And yes, Jenn, they can be so scratchy on the arms!

I have to stop myself from buying more plaid shirts. I like them, and I do wear them, but not enough to justify any more of them. Heh, at least I'm wearing one today (Burberry burgundy plaid popover).

Sorry to hear the skull cashmere sweater is going. I like it too, but I hear you. I have not approached my sweater collection for an edit yet, but might tackle it next week while the contractors are at the house working on our powder room. I could probably get rid of half of it and never miss them. Sigh.

Onward and upward! Well done, my friend!

I love edit stories/ inspiration. Great work!

Have same love/ hate with sparkly tops- I have few occasions where that is
just the right thing, and I’ve not found I can keep one to be me “ forever” top. I run cold so don’t wear shells, & at holiday time I usually reach for something warmer. I’m really better off with a good cashmere capsule and having a capsule of dressy/ elegant necklaces even if seems expensive per wear, as it takes up less room and maintenance.

Ugh, those Club Monaco mistakes are so regrettably expensive, aren’t they? But it happens. For some reason I find it impossible to figure out my correct size in that brand. It’s like all wrong for my body yet I love the fabrics and quality.

I really like the idea of having less and just wearing it to death. It allows for more updating. Although of course it might get tiring to have to update too often.

I agree with Jenn re: overthinking. That first reaction and snap decision is Important. I had to remind myself of that when I purged an annoying, floppy cardigan the other day and then almost retrieved it from the donate box in my garage when i couldn’t find anything to wear.

I’m with you re: unstructured bags...I feel sloppy wearing them. And I also dislike any top that needs a cami for modesty. I’ll layer happily for warmth but not because I can’t wear the top without flashing too much cleavage or bra...not worth the hassle.

Your insights will help me edit my own wardrobe, thanks for sharing them. Though I must say, lovin' most of the things you are tossing! Ouch.
I hope to be as rational about it as you.

Nice work, especially fitting in such a complete edit in between everything else. I can relate to “concocting this scenario” for special occasion wear. So freeing to not have items like that in my closet, reminding me that I don’t go to those types of events. Good luck with #4- it’s great that your new job allows you to relax about fashion.

Well done, good work.I am nodding on unstructured bags, I have a couple and they are good, but I don't like them as much as structured bags.

Wow, impressive work! Very proud of you :-)

I'm not a layered either. I'll do a jacket over a top, but I won't do a shirt under a sweater or a camisole under a blouse so I'm with you there.

Great job on refining what is a great wardrobe into something even better. I feel exactly the same way about plaid shirts - see them on Angie and others and think they look wonderful, buy them, wear them once or twice and feel bad in it - I am going to my wardrobe to make sure I still don't have any of these lurking...

Thanks for posting, it really does help to get things under control and understand what works and what does not. I just have to make sure that I don't make the same mistakes again (and again....).

I had one of those sparkly tops. I wore it once for a holiday party, forced myself to wear it a couple more times, and then unceremoniously kicked it to the curb. The sequins literally scraped my arms if I tried to wear it without a jacket. Never again.

I think fast and furious might be the way to go with this. Forces you not to overthink.

Excellent! You are ejecting things that don’t work and making space. I think footwear gets such a serious workout in an extreme climate and you use footwear to upgrade your look, so if you are done with something, good riddance to it. On with the new.

I remember the skull sweater and liked it on you but then again I also know the frustrations of constant neckline adjustments. So again— good riddance.

I had to laugh about the sparkly camisoles/tops. I got sucked into buying one on vast discount last winter and have never put it on. I left it back in Ontario. Out of sight out of mind. Call it my holding zone.
