I seem to be needing 1/2 larger more often these days, but now the pads of my feet get super sensitive after walking for a long time. Many of my boots and regular shoes are not padded enough & I need extra cushy socks...... too bad they cant take some fat from my tush & inject it into my feet!
These foot petals are pretty good in the inside heel keeping your shoes on if you have never tried them.

Re: the heel width issue — I wonder if this is part of why my socks are slipping down into my shoes and boots more lately, unless I wear a bit thicker sock. It’s maddening.

Angie, it made shopping for new lightweight hiking shoes/trail runners a bit tedious. I literally had to order a dozen pairs to find some that worked. Even then, they are still a little roomy in the heel, but since they lace up, I can secure them pretty well. I've always had trouble with loafers and pumps fitting properly without slipping off my heels, but now I'm even finding this true of boots! It seems so odd. But it's just another reminder to be really picky.

Rebekah, based on what you say about the Koris being tight, I’m hoping that it’s a good thing my usual size was sold out — I gambled on a half size larger and ordered them. I can often go up a half size if I wear substantial socks. As long as the heel isn’t too wide! It seems a lot of cuts lately are wide in the heel and slip around on me — what’s up with that?? Are my feet getting bonier? LOL

Janet, thank you for showing your catagorizing system. I am going to try that. It would be good to have footwear taking up less room. I have already eliminated a pair of wedges similar to your Mattisse because they look dated. They are a soft grey/silver metallic that I really liked.

I absolutely need to stop buying booties, I am overloaded.
I don’t find the red or leopard dated at all, just a different style, glad they’ll move on to someone they suit in the moment. What I hope to do with some of mine.

Sarah, this is the first time I’ve grouped my footwear this way while editing, and it’s really useful. But this is also the year of reckoning for me that I can’t stand wearing those higher heeled (non platform/lug/stompy) styles for all day wear anymore. And I don’t have need for dressier shoes so much, so this was especially helpful to see that’s a category where I have over-invested in the past.

It’s also interesting to note that I first looked at the AW Kori boots way back when I bought those Fluevog short pointy-toes boots. At the time Angie actually nudged me toward the Fluevogs rather than the Koris. The Koris have had an unusual amount of staying power on the market — Wang is still making versions of this several years later (I eyed the rose gold cutout versions but decided silver would be a better choice for me). At any rate, I ordered a pair to try. They’re a half size larger than what I usually take because my size is sold out, but I’m often between those two sizes in narrow boots anyway, so maybe they’ll work.

Great edit, Janet. I love your stompy boots and I especially love that you do so much stomping. Yeah!!

Since footwear is an important strategy for you to stay trendy/current, maybe a good strategy going forward would be to make sure that your boots in less often worn categories have more staying power, and buy your most of the moment pairs in everyday/frequently worn styles. (Not that you haven't done that so far -- just that your way of grouping things for this edit suggests that insight to me.)

I have never liked wedge booties, I'm not a wedge fan full stop. So I'm not keen on those two but don't think it is for datedness.
The Donna Karan possibility have such a great heel detail!

Janet, my footwear collection is much smaller than yours but I still love your process and plan to use it. I agree with the comments others made about which ones you should keep vs. consider passing on .I see a very interesting similarity between groups 2/3 and 4...each collection contains black, metallic, blue/green/dark red, and multicolor print items. So you have all those colors available in both lower and higher heels for various jean/pant lengths. This helps explains why your footwear works so well across all the pants you wear. I'm going to remember this! I also need to remember the visually interesting detail in ALL your footwear and use it as inspiration to introduce more detail into my more plain/simple footwear collection.

Such a great collection! Especially love all your stompy boots, the newer Fryes in particular. Agree with you that the two pairs of Matisse wedges look a little out of place here -- not as fresh and interesting as the others.

Ah, FashIntern, you'll notice that those high heeled lug soled boots have a relatively gentle rise in the footbed, due to the lug/platform sole. They make me taller, but they are much easier to walk in than the high-heeled boots that don't have platform soles.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! This is helpful. Even just the process of taking them out and grouping them this way to photograph them was very instructive. I got a very clear sense of how each of these sets of boots function with my outfits, and where I absolutely don't need more, as compared to where I may have a bit of a wardrobe hole. IO recommend this strategy to anyone who wants to winnow down a large footwear collection!

I was all set to say to keep the leopard print because they’re “in” right now, until I clicked and saw the shape of the wedge. Nope.

Funny that you call your last pic high heels. I see one in the middle of the stompy boots pic that is at least as high as these. What I do see tying them all together is pattern/crazy colors. They are your fun/interesting boots. As they drift away, might you want to replace them with low-heeled boots that are equally visually engaging?

Lisa, I think you were the inspiration for me to get those green boots! I love them and enjoy wearing them for certain occasions, but they will never be everyday shoes, that's for sure. :-D

Thanks for the confirmation of my feelings about the Matisse booties. I enjoyed them for a time, and now it's looking like time to let go. Hmm, my niece may enjoy them!

The only ones that seem to be somewhat dated or " not you" are the Matisse leopard and red calf hair booties. They have kind of a retro look that doesn't really jive with how you dress . I like all of your new finds ,and those burgundy ones would be a great addition to your collection . Your green suede high heeled booties - I have those same ones in brown and haven't put them on in two years now. I so loved them but they are way too high a heel to walk in ....hardly got any wear out of mine. Yours look pretty new too

I'll also agree in finding fewer pair of shoes and boots much easier to store, and easier to go through. I still have too many and need to do a good solid edit this weekend

Janet - what a wonderful collection of boots you have! I do think you could edit out the red and animal print wedge boots out without missing them, because you have so many other lovely options to choose from. However, it may be best to wait and see what you want to wear in the next 6 months before making a decision on that.

You are wise to make a decision not to purchase additional high heeled boots in the future, due to comfort. The heeled boots you have are lovely.

I can appreciate your thoughts that there is something liberating about lightening up our heavy wardrobes. I am definitely loving mine more now that it has been given a solid edit.
