How about "shrinking" the bulk of what you're keeping so it doesn't seem like so much?
By rolling everything, instead of folding, you'll save a surprising amount of room. (this is an old travellers tip). Or how about using those vacuum bags that you suck all the air out of? I think they're called space bags and you can get them at Kmart etc.

I agree with those above who say that if you love it - then its OK! Also, remind yourself that it is a process - you won't do it all at once (I can't believe I am giving you advice because I still haven't got my wardrobe "cleaned out" or simplified - like I want!) - that's really kind of ridiculous. So - do as I say, not as I do! :-)

I don't know about Austin, but here in coastal So CAL, we can wear almost all of our clothes and shoes year round and so it makes it really really difficult to cull your wardrobe for the different seasons. I just layer more in the winter time, so usually the clothes that are hanging in my closet stay there year round!

One more thing - I have "cleaned" out my closet several times since joining YLF - and some of the things that I kept because I loved them, I found 6 months later that I had become pickier about my clothes and/or had honed my style and no longer loved the item and so got rid of it then. That's always kind of nice!

I'm with MaryK. If you love it and you wear it (in its season) and you have room to store it, what's the harm in keeping it?

You can always revisit some decisions when the season changes again. That is what I do.

Some of us are not made to be minimalists.

Team Keep It If You Love It. I don't think the experience was a bust at all! If you've winnowed it down to only things you love and wear, and that is consistent with the available storage space, it seems to me you've accomplished the task!!

I agree with the others, if you love it, keep it... I have some items I only wear a few times a year, but keep them because I love to pull them out every summer... (I have the opposite issue... it is cold here more than it is warm!)--- but can empathize with the warm climate since I grew up in FL.....

Perhaps you could adopt a one-in/ two-out strategy to help shrink your wardrobe over the course of the next year.

I think if you wore all the items in the bins this past summer, then keep all of it. I find that everything I wear in the summer needs to be washed after every single wearing, and dry clean items take a few days to get back, so I need many more summer clothing items than winter or fall. You might find that you cull some of the items next spring/summer as you buy new things as well.

I am in the process of building a wardrobe after years of owning very few clothes ( worked only in scrubs, thus no work wardrobe at all ). My thoughts are that I don't want to own more clothes than I can wear out in a "reasonable" time so that I can then buy new items and have a wardrobe that reflects changing style and fashion. If an item gets used less than twice a month during it's season then it wouldn't make sense for me to own it.

I tried to minimalize but still have 150 or so items myself, without counting shoes. If you love what you have and you wear it all I don't see a problem. If you don't wear the half of it, yes, you have more work to do! (I still have things I need to toss, but I have the room right now for it all to be in one closet, so space isn't an issue. I can take the time until I'm mentally and fiscally ready to let go.)

I went through my entire spring/summer wardrobe with an eye to storing it for fall/winter (which is only now sorta kinda starting here in Austin) and... only surplussed five things. I now have three bins of summer things (2 small file-size, 1 larger under the bed) where I was hoping to at least eliminate a bin. I was really surprised to see how much room my assortment of sleeveless, lightweight, and linen separates took up.

Sigh. My quest for minimalism failed. It is true that hot or temperate weather is 3/4 of the year here, so I actually need more hot than cold. And you need more hot stuff period, because you sweat in it and need to wash it more often. But... three bins?

I might add the winter stuff when packed takes up five small bins, mostly because they have more fabric in them and thus more bulk.

Am I being arbitrary in my goals, or do I just have too many clothes? I really do enjoy everything I kept.
