I struggle with "party tops" too. They start to feel over-the-top very quickly to me (ruffles, peplums, sparkle, sequins -- I'm kind of allergic to most of those), and the ones I'm drawn to don't feel festive enough. I have a simple silk shirt that ought to work, but it's navy. I think the colour just skews a little too "workwear" or too corporate or something. So I usually end up in a dress with fun tights.&nbsp;</p> <p>I'm pretty close to being done with fall shopping -- found a pair of burgundy boots over the summer, and have added a few mustard-y items (my "nod to trends" I guess) and a pair of dark grey jeans this month. I am waiting on a Boden order to try these navy cords (they sent me the wrong size so I'm waiting for the replacement), but if these don't work out it looks like there are some other good corduroy options this season (finally!).</p> <p>I'd like to add a warm-ish toned tote or hobo bag (could be burgundy, chocolate brown, or even tan if I can find the right shade) -- hoping to stick to secondhand for this so it might take a while to find the right one. I'd also like to add a really chunky, cozy cardigan (short, not long) in navy or possibly chocolate brown. I have what I need now, but will buy replacement when I see them, because they get a lot of wear. They are crossover items that go between work and weekends, autumn and winter. Here's how it went: <ul> <li>there was not a lot to purge, which is great! Some uncomfortable shoes, a few pieces that were well-loved but worn out, and one or two mistakes will go for donation or recycling.&nbsp;</li> <li>the purgatory bin contains some pieces that I still like and that fit, but that I just don't ever seem to reach for - when the shopping-for-novelty bug strikes, I'll start there, and maybe something will pop!</li> <li>if I didn't buy anything this fall, I think I'd be pretty content with my wardrobe, which is nice because it means I can add a few pieces with no pressure at all, which hopefully will mean better decisions</li> </ul> Here's what I have in mind: <ul> <li>A fall-weight casual jacket - either black or blush. I'm okay if it's a bit gear-ish; this is a going for walks at the cottage kind of piece.</li> <li>Shoes - white sneakers and black riding boots or other casual fall flats&nbsp;</li> <li>Some sort of a 'party top' for well, parties, to pair with jeans and heels that feels somewhat fun and festive, while also working for my modest and understated sensibilities. This is one of those items I'm never happy with. Suggestions appreciated! Oh - also need heels lol!</li> <li>A cross-body purse for everyday use (undecided on color but def neutral; probably black or maybe taupe/stone)</li> <li>A few non-essential, nod-to-trends pieces if I find ones I like - perhaps a non-skinny jean, a moody floral scarf, a light blue and/or berry top (two colors that I wear with the comfort of my neutrals), and/or something glen plaid</li> </ul> What I don't need currently is any more skinny pants or any more navy!
