oh god, donate and don't look back. Both because foot discomfort is the worst, and also because I'm sure you're no stranger to the phenomenon of when a wardrobe item is chef's-kiss-perfection and then you move to a new place and suddenly you feel just totally *off*. Time will pass, and your taste will evolve, and you will find new shoes that you're excited about, that suit your next chapter, and that hopefully don't pinch all over!

DonnaF interesting! Haven’t tried the heel lift but it may indeed help.

Angie thx for the details! Your footwear is beautiful though I prefer a chunkier look for myself. But I admire your commitment to foot comfort AND hood looks.

Jessikams, I wear loafers, sneakers, sneaker-hybrids, hi-tops, boots - and have two pairs of sandals. And have VERY boney and fussy feet. I empathize!!!

I've switched to this type of oxford. Cole Haan makes great shoes. Maybe something for you too?

I expect that the type of loafers I wear are not your style.

I still remember my move out here but am already planning my move back lol - all the shoes I plan to take (from here) can complete a 15 min walk without pain (even the D'orsay flats & 1 pair of heels lol). When you say these 'pinch' your toes, can you walk in them long or they're only bearable sitting?

Even if you don't commute by foot, I personally feel we women owe it to ourselves to not wear anything that would seriously hamper our chances of escaping an emergency situation (like 9/11 or the HK protests). Feel free to disagree with me (or call me morbid lol) but I won't do stiff pencil skirts anymore for this reason, lol...

TL;DR we all have particular discomfort dealbreakers. For me, certain shoes are OK but sometimes give me a dull heel ache after about my 4th hour or teaching - I find that bearable but cannot stand chafed Achilles heels, for example (such shoes end up donated/ returned). What's your limit? And do these shoes break that limit?

If they aren't comfortable, pass them along. And SF is right - you don't know how much storage you will have, or how long it will take the slow boat to arrive (it was three months when I moved to Okinawa in 2001, and there wasn't supply-chain issues from a world-wide pandemic).

Bring your best, your favorites, your most comfortable, your most joyous stuff. Sell/donate/give away anything that makes your feet hurt.

If you are set on keeping one pair of shoes and they're of equal comfort, I vote for the middle pair.

Lisa, love a strong opinion!
Roberta, indeed, always an echo… I echo myself a LOT with this “is it workable? Good enough to keep?” question.
Angie, you wear a lot of shoes like this but they seem to be comfortable for you! My bones just seem to stick out in all the wrong places.
Suntiger, for real, not thrilled about the idea of an office, but perhaps I might end up in a gallery or library type job, which might have similar sartorial requirements…..

Work shoes do not have to be uncomfortable and certainly should not pinch your toes. I wear shoes along these lines as my every day shoes and if they pinch they go.

I'm so torn! I love All Black, and one of my favorite pairs of shoes was made by them for a boutique in my area. But, moving shoes that aren't comfortable internationally seems silly. I'd keep either the metallic or floral (middle) and see if stretching will help, or if you get more wear before the move. Give away the other two now, and consider giving away the third before the move, if you can't get them to fit correctly.

Ah, one of my favorite shoe brands!
Personally, I’d keep the metallic pair and let someone else love the other pairs. I’d also try to get them stretched, you can use the sock method mentioned by Irina, or I’ve taken them to a cobbler and had them stretched.

I had an All Black T strap flat that WAS comfortable until my feet sized up.
I’d quit thinking of them as office shoes and put them in the “ occasion” category at best. Then try them all in around the house and see if any are pretty darn good even if not sneaker- comfy. Then only keep if it’s an “ outfit- maker” that makes you feel great. For example, I have a few pairs of EF ankle strap flat , or very low , heel shoes that I can wear with dresses or skirts instead of having to style with sneakers and would wear to a wedding or similar thing , until they stop fitting even ok. I agree the metallic LOOK the most liked that kind of item, unless you wear a lot of pastels.
But if you’re looking for a clean slate, I’ll support that for sure. That’s why I liked Sally’s shoe post- it’s kind of a reality check for where I am now, feet- wise.
So for me the least useful type of shoe to “ save” is one that offers not much sartorial advantage over sneakers ( or boots, but comfy boots for me now are not very refined- looking either. Hence I am more likely to keep an emergency dressy- dress shoe if I already have it and I test it out a couple times a year.

My experience is that your feet are never going get less particular. I am eyeballing a pair of rust suede booties in my closet with a modest heel right now, knowing that I don't like any heel at all these days. But they are so good looking! (Is there an echo in here?)

Jenni, it sounds so lovely to stay and get to know one piece of land like that! You must love your “home place.”

Why did I buy 3 pairs? Taiwan does a lot of “buy one get one half price” or even “buy one get one free” kinda of sales, so I always end up with too much. Even on trips to the pharmacy or grocery! I needed one pack of tampax but got 5 for free, now where to store them????

Just noticed the upcoming international move part! I disagree strongly with the forum (can’t name names, because I was too new to really know who was who) on this, and think that yes, you definitely want to winnow down your closet now, and sort things into very clear categories, in case some of it needs to go in storage or arrives in a slow boat. For me that meant seasonal capsules. If you have an idea of where you are going, you could be more lenient on things for that climate (I got the forum to help with my fall capsule by not saying it was for here—made it for there and quietly added fleece-lined tights to go with the shorts, some sweaters, a jacket with Thinsulate to swap for the unlined one, etc) Take all the things you love, but why take things you don’t love? Surely you can buy locally-appropriate things you don’t love wherever you are going.

“Who knows what I’ll end up doing” is not a strong enough reason to take stuff you don’t like. But if you think you probably will start out in an office job, and that you would be Lot’s wife sighing over these shoes, then take the ones that would make you turn to salt. You want your wardrobe to be you, so that you can fall back into it and be supported, and can focus on stepping out into your new life without needing to think about whether what you’re wearing is authentic to you.

Please continue to post your prep for the move.

I am most keen on the gold perforated ones.
I have lived on the same piece of land for over 30 years, subdividing it and building a new home on the back of the land 4 years ago. I can’t relate well to moving countries and your whole wardrobe several times!
I do wonder why you bought *three* pairs in a panic? Wouldn’t one have done? I think it depends on how many pieces you want to possibly move with you as to whether to keep none, one or all three. It seems a pity to never get to wear them? My work shoes are comfortable but not walk the streets all day comfortable.

I would probably keep my favourite if the three. The middle are the most unique. I lean to the pewter though as being year round versatile.

I love the laced-up without laces thing, have 2 pr like that myself. In my closet they count as funky cool twists on staid classics, but that’s me.

What do you wear when you have to go to offices even not for work? Do you plan to work in an office anytime soon?

I’m in awe of your party wear, because it is never cliche. You find innovative ways to wear things I’d never think of as dressy or fun, and wind up with amazing looks that fully fit the remit of creativity and fun. Would you do the same for office attire? It’s a different remit; would you want to approach it in the same unique-path-that-surprisingly-ends-up-at-the-right-address kind of way?

No, office shoes are never IMO truly comfortable. Do you think you’ll be working in an office in the next three years? I’d keep the middle pair, because they’re unique, and let the others go if not.
