Jenni, it’s hard to maintain effort over years like that—well done! My feelings about stretchy waistbands change with how stretchy my waist is. When it’s soft, I am fine with elastic. But if I’m more muscular, my waist doesn’t change as much throughout the day, andi prefer a waistband that stays the same too.

Put me on team elastic waist pants! Since March 2019 I am down 12 kg which is a lot, and have still only had to edit out about 3 pair pants for fit, which seems amazing to me. I rebought one very cheap ($15) pair of jeans from outlet store a size down and those later went after #30 wears.
Because I hardly ever tuck (that used to be never, but I have now tucked the 2021 white jeans and worn with a belt) it doesn’t seem to matter if they have an elastic waist and some stretch. I absolutely don’t see it as “giving up”. I still put effort into my ensembles.
Some Fabbers don’t find elastic waists comfortable though, I always do.

Glad to hear from so many folks who share the problem of weight fluctuation or shape shifting due to bloat etc. Like Jules, I don’t get things altered any more because it doesn’t help— before you know it, the item doesn’t fit again!
Suntiger and SF, nice examples of possibly more comfortable versions. Stretch for the win!
kkards, so true about having to replace things.

These pants keep staying in my closet because they are so lightweight, pack down to nothing, don’t wrinkle, wash in the machine, etc. BUT if I had a different pair that did not constrict….. that would be nicer.
Still pondering…. Might give them a try, as Janet suggests, in the next week or so.

Well the outfit is smashing, but I won't wear crotch constricting pants. On the other hand, I do have jeans and bottoms that are only constricting some days. I keep those because it is not a long term thing but a daily fluctuation.

I think you look SUPER CUTE, Jessikams. But the fact that the pants are constricting gives me pause.

I gave up long ago on everything I have being Fab. I aspire to "you look fairly decent"! Mostly if I like something pretty well and it has some use, I'll keep it.

But constricting pants? That would be a no for me. And for an "event", which sounds special occasion, wouldn't you want something you felt really sure about?

Well I hear you on the shifting body and consequent elusiveness of ‘perfect fit’. It’s why I don’t get things altered. So on the basis, I would keep (some of) these as long as I liked them and saw a use for them. I like the two bottom patterns best but they are similar enough that I didn’t see two patterns at a glance. So maybe one of those could go, if there’s a goal to pare down.

So…if these are the types of pants that you reach for for certain occasions and you pass on these pants, what will you wear them next time that occasion happens? I get that these are not perfect, but if you will just be rebuying something similar, keep what you have and save your self the money and the hassle.

I dunno. I’m not worried about less versatile items if I already own them and I really like how they work for the intended event/ occasion when and if such occasion exists. This is assuming you have space and also thatvit doesn’t just bug you to have rarely- worn items. When I do review such items at intervals, then I’ll sometimes find, whoops, no good, I wouldn’t/ couldn’t wear this now.
Going forward, I feel I’m less likely to buy much special wear, but try to make do somehow, so not trying to stay stocked up on “ what if” items. Though I have
perused evening wear sales racks in the past year to see if someone jumped out at me as unusually “ me”. Nothing did!
If you truly have specific occasional events that are fun to be dressed just right ( for you), then I think it’s fine to keep the best versions but also give yourself permission to refresh that capsule if you find something good - but not look at it as an urgent wardrobe hole. That’s a benefit of keeping an ok item for, to feel very unpressured about replacing.

I keep things with limited purpose all the time, like pieces I only wear in Hawaii. If these serve a similar purpose for you I would keep them. But then again, I think sparking joy as the standard for which wardrobe items to keep is a load of bunk.

This is the kind of item that drives me nuts too. Unique, serves a purpose, and suits my taste…but not perfect enough to wear for a full day, so it gets assigned limited duty and therefore usually gets passed over. I have a few too many of those things in my closet. I’d say keep the most versatile and favorite pair and maybe let the others go. Or challenge yourself to wear one in the next week and if you can’t make yourself do it, they need to go.

Now I need to take my own advice.

Three pairs of Zara wide leg pants in a silky, scarf-like material that is machine washable. Similar to a pajama pant style. Bought because they were on sale and they were the right length (a rarity for me).

One is green and white with a fun little ruffle around the bottom; the others a more sober mixture of brown/cream/black, sans ruffle.

I don’t wear them often, but they are great for any event where I will be standing up and thus visible from top to toe. (In other words, they make a nice change from “tabletop dressing” where the focus is on an interesting top.)

They fit ok. Like, I wouldn’t wear them just for a normal day, as the fabric has no stretch and they’re a bit constricting at waist and crotch point. They are the pants equivalent of “sitting shoes”: fine for an hour or two but you wouldn’t want to take a long plane ride in these

How are you feeling about this kind of item these days? Is “good enough” good enough? My fear is that my body changes so much, I could replace and replace everything in my closet all the time and still things wouldn’t fit “perfectly.” I guess I could just give up and wear only elastic…?
