I was thinking of how I'm bad about always wearing the same things together and how a tool like this could help. I was thinking of two options... One - a "goes with" field that lets you select categories like jeans pants skirts etc. or even option 2 that lets you x-ref specific items it goes with. Just an idea.

I'm very impressed! Your database sounds very intriguing and I would love to try it. However, I mainly work on a Mac, so I suppose that rules it out. Your 40% must be very honorable. I haven't calculated the percentage, but I've been counting my wears since September 1, and will shortly be posting about how I've been doing so far. Like you, I've come to realize that I don't wear exactly what I think I do.

Oh, duh, I see the breakdown now on your chart! Similar to my numbers . . . but I don't count accessories. 40% sounds like a great percentage. Hmmm, I wonder if I'm closer to that than I imagine? I don't keep track (with another closet 3000 miles away it's pretty hard to be that accurate).

Mo- I had experience recently with minimalism when I went on a trip with very few items. I really was craving some variety/color after a few days so I am not sure I am cut out for the extremely minimal wardrobe.

Gabrielle- yes I hear you on multiples. I do have multiples of my skinny jeans but at 35 wears so far this year, even splitting wears among the 4 pairs is still cost effective. I have had trouble finding my size in the past so whenever I find something that works I am tempted to "buy out the store"! Multiples is one area I am trying to curb myself now.

I do have a number of expensive items (mostly dresses and coats) that rarely get worn, but sometimes it's nice to put on something that is not utilitarian (kind of wearable art). So their cost per wear is bad, but their emotional return per wear is high!

I love data analyses. A year ago someone on YLF sent me her spreadsheet for charting clothing expenditures. I continue to use it to this day and found it an invaluable tool.

I discovered which items I spend a lot of money on, but wear so often that cost per wear is extremely low. I now give myself permission to purchase those types of items regardless of the cost. I know in the long run, it will work out in my favor.

On the the flip side, I also know which items I buy and rarely wear. I use the spreadsheet to make myself understand that I just don't need those types of items anymore. I also discovered that buying multiples is not in my best interest. This is something I never would have guessed if I did not have actual data. For example, you would think multiples of tee shirts and white blouses would pay off in the long run. It doesn't, in my case. I was genuinely surprised at that result.

I have a question as to the size of your wardrobe. I don't think I could get through 40% of mine in 3 months because I likely have too much stuff still. Do you have a smaller wardrobe (under 100 pieces)?
I thought I could get by on around 100 but I seem to keep creeping up closer to 120 or 125 (not including shoes). I think I just crave a certain amount of variety and that means a couple new purchases each month, and therefore, less repeats of what I already own. I think I am finally okay with this. I realize I will not be that gal that wears 90% of her stuff. But I do want to wear most of it at least often enough to feel that I spent wisely and got use out of my purchases.

This is great! It looks as if you are making some terrific concrete discoveries about your wearing habits. Over the long run it's going to be so helpful. I haven't done anything quite this systematic but I have counted all my items in each category and all the things that I have bought and kept, and I have a pretty good idea of what I'm wearing and what I am not wearing (and why.)

Pam, I'll be so excited to get to this point! All my clothes have been added to the database (except some newer items), and I am adding my backlog of WIWs as I have the time. One of the other features I really like is the outfit scoring. One of the things I'm already seeing is that some items I really like never seem to be part of a high-scoring outfit. I either need to find some new outfit combinations with those items or send them on their way.

Since I design databases as a job, this has served as a "lab project" for me. The database I have designed is similar to stylitics, but the advantage is I can customize it for me (as an example in my analysis today I realized denim is really a "neutral" so I was able to recode my jeans to neutral which significantly changed my color analysis).
