I love the spreadsheet Pam!! I may create something similar when I am ready to start on my dressing room. I echo your sentiments: "jeans too big and capris look soooo bad on me and I don't like boot cuts on me and why didn't anyone tell me skinnies were great?" - LOL!!! thanks for sharing!

I love the idea of an analysis by age! Great job. Now, to see if you can stick to your sweater resolution. ;)

I do remember the arctic AC of Texas. I was there for work a few times, and the AC just seems bitterly cold. Maybe because it is so much hotter outside.

Very inspiring! Love your description of Texas air conditioning -- very similar climate and issues for me. That also prompted me to pay more attention to my inter- season/ all - season items so they'd be available year- round for crazy temp fluctuations and would get more wear. I live in sweaters in the winter but still tend to collect too many.

I see lots of long-sleeved tops, although not so many shirts/blouses as many might have.
I have a similar number of clothes but loads more pants and jackets than you- interesting!
I like the way you have listed these, I tend to write colour or pattern details on my list- mainly to avoid duplicating too much!

I probably misread! Thanks for clarifying. I used to have a lot older closet until I joined here. There was a purge and a bit of buying then, 3 years ago. So I'd say half my closet is 1 - 3 years old, a quarter or so is less than a year and a quarter or so more than 3 years, or pre-YLF Shoes in particular are well into the 5 yr old and more mark.

Gosh Mo- I think I stated things wrong- my "old" times are at least 3 years old, some are 8-10, one winter jacket comes from the 90's and I have at least 2 shirts and a sweater from the 80's. I thought I churned my wardrobe a lot so was surprised to see that 40 % was "old".

Gap actually has dates on their tags if you look closely. Noticed this a few weeks back. Some Old Navy too.
3 years is the oldest of your items? Wow. I'd bet a quarter of my wardrobe is 4, 5 years old, and a few things 10+ years.
Great job tracking!

This is a great analysis. I really like how you broke it down by age of garment, too -- it gives you a sense of what wears hard or what you get sick of more quickly and also shows where you might need to update soonest.

It sounds to me as if you have a decent "medium sized" closet by YLF standards. And if this process has made you happier, it is well worth the investment of time.

Impressive!

Thanks Lisa- I am "petite" so shop at about 3-4 places (BR/Gap, AT/Loft, Talbots, Nordstrom's)- I have 2 daughters so try to stay away from their stores/styles. So keeping track of who works for me is not too hard, LOL. I'll have to go look though and see where my "very olds" are from as they may represent better quality items (some of them surprisingly were Gap shirts that have held up to numerous wears for over 9 years- the dates are certain because my daughter worked at Gap that summer and bought these for me).

Great analysis. I track my wardrobe by date of purchase, cost per wear, and brand. This way I know if I should shy away from a certain brand in the future. Or continue to invest in their items.

I love your comprehensive analysis and your entire post! I can completely relate on so many counts and could have almost written this almost myself word for word! :-)

We moved this summer after four+ months of extensive renovations on a fixer-upper that included gutting/painting/replacing just about every single solitary surface in the entire house. I lived in gear and painted-splattered ugliness not fit for public view, and like you I had a hard time reentering the "real world." I too purged extensively since I refused to take anything with me I didn't love. And yet there are still things in my closet I really don't love...how can that be?!

Finally, I also live in the desert SW and really struggle with a lack of seasons as I approach my wardrobe. This last weekend it was almost 90, tomorrow low 60s, notwithstanding frigid A/C and overheated cars parked in the sun. And all I really want to buy and/or wear are sweaters, jackets and boots. Sigh. Time to come up with my own plan for dealing with my reality too. Thanks for sharing your thoughts....so very helpful. And best of luck with your resolutions!

Some of the very old stuff is around because it just doesn't (or won't) wear out! I also (even in the summer) wear lots of long sleeves (to ward off the hot sun and/or the cool A/C).

As far as navy pants go- my jeans are my "navy". I have a golden retriever who sheds for a living, so pants that repel dog hair are essential (since I work at home)- and jeans fit the bill. For dress I have black, but again not a lot of dress-up opportunities. I tried some cords this year, but I didn't like the way I looked so back they went.

Thanks for your thoughts, rachylou!

What a smart way to analyze your wardrobe.

I was noticing the most "very old" stuff is in the long-sleeved category, followed by black and khaki pants. Do those things have a lot of life left in them? Have you though about another colour of pants... like navy?

Just some thoughts to mix it up :)

So smart!
