I was going to chime in and plus-one Angie's rec; I love my Troentorp but I see the style you're going for is more of a "lug soled mule" than a traditional clog (I always think of clogs has having stiff footbeds.) Troentorp are very traditional style.

The aerosols also look a size or half a size big. You could try to size down? I like the way they look!!!

Yes to the Fredas looking short. Hope the size up works!

Here are the Aerosoles. Looking at that heel fit, as well as how roomy they are across my foot, I’m thinking of trying a these a half size down. I think the 7.5 might work.

Thanks for the clog recommendation, Laura! I’ve noted a few recommendations on these and I think the stiffness and noisiness of the soles bugs me enough that perhaps it’s just not the right style for me. And the more flexible soles seem to be on “comfort” brands, which don’t really have the look I’m after.

Here are the Freda Salvador lug soles loafers on my feet. I do think a half size up is the answer to this shoe, so I’ve ordered them to try. They seem ever so slightly short as well as a little snug across the top of my foot. Patent doesn’t generally stretch so I’m not counting on these easing up in fit. It’s a different vibe from the clogs, but I like the substantial sole and the modern classic style. I think they play well with jeans for fall and spring, and maybe even with thin socks for cooler weather.

Love your new blue boots! The heel is eye-catching in the best of ways.

Just popping in to mention these Free People clogs. I have them in white and they fit my low-volume feet. They come in black if that's what you're after. The leather is soft, they are made in Spain and have studs not staples, which I prefer.

Lisa, you enabler! I do really like the Freda’s. I’m going to try them on again today. I was on my feet in heels a bit yesterday (attended a memorial), so not fully trusting just one try-on. But I do think I need a slightly larger size in them.

Confession: I did also just buy these Huma Blanco boots. I have been wanting something with this shaped wooden heel ever since I first saw them, and the navy blue is a nice change of pace from all the black I wear, while still going with a lot. They’re also surprisingly comfortable! Nice since I got rid of two pairs of dressier higher heeled boots.

So if I get the Fredas and they work, and with the addition of the Huma Blanco boots, that would be a nice update for the season and I’d be done with footwear for now. My boot collection is quite full.

I’m actually wondering if I could get away with the Aerosoles a half size down. I’d love it if they had a back strap, and have been scoping out online sources for something similar, but everything looks rather wide for me. Anything with a super rounded wide toe is usually a given not to work.

Update:

I think I’m just not the right customer for clogs. Neither the Born nor the AA were quite right. AA was too wide/high volume too. Comfort was not there in either one. I’m not a fan of this stuff style that makes a lot of noise when you walk. Maybe there are others that have softer soles, but I’m not sure I really want to pursue the search that much more right now.

Now, I do like the vibe of these lug soled loafer styles as an alternate idea.

The Aerosoles look pretty cool on. But they are a bit too wide/large on the foot. I don’t think a half size down will work because they’ll be too short. I thought about putting tongue pads inside but I don’t think they’ll take up enough room to make them work.

The Freda Salvador’s are the best fit for my actual foot. I really like the look of them too. A bit classic but with a twist. However, they’re just a little bit small in my regular size, so I would need to order a half size up. It figures they’re the most expensive option. I need to decide whether I’m going to order the 8.5. I may see if I can find a similar style at a lower price point.

Am also on the clog-obsessed wagon…have tried a few pairs and the suede ones seem much more comfortable and require less break-in. As for the issue of “slippage”, Cordani (carried by Nordstrom) has a really nice padded footbed but seem to run 1/2 size small. And the brown color is more like olive green. Waiting for Chocolat Blu to arrive…

Hope you have more luck!

PS Great scoop on the KD clog! Thank you!

I have actually had a cobbler fill in the top of mules with softer deer leather strips, so they don't cause the rubbing on the top of the foot. Are they loose enough on top that that would be an option?

SOLIDARITY! I had a clog fail with Kelsi Dagger this season too. (I am having a MAJOR LIFE clog fail in that I spent the better part of the last two decades amassing wood-bottomed clogs, boots, & sandals (they truly were comfortable) and now can barely wear any of them, due to toe and knee issues.) I have been fishing around for shoes to take the place of my beloved clogs and I looooove the style of these:

https://www.kelsidaggerbk.com/.....#038;_ss=r

but when I ordered, the footbed was the absolute perfect size, but the upper was so loose it was an exercise to try to keep them on my feet. So sad. I think it's going to be mostly sneakers and ankle boots for me this season.

So… a slight detour but I’m thinking of trying the Skylars from Zappos (quick turnaround) and while I’m at it, these other styles sort of fit the same vibe I’m after, of a substantial yet not too clompy transitional shoe in black. Yes, there’s another Born style in there, but these might appeal to me more than the others I tried. And the loafer mules might stay on my feet if they’re narrow enough. The Freda Salvador’s are $$ but my loafers from them are an excellent fit on my foot and extremely well-made. If they’re perfect, they might justify the cost with longevity. Clogs are probably less likely to have that longevity so I wouldn’t want to spend that much on them, I don’t think.

TIL that the German word "Halbschuh"--literally "half shoe" does not mean clogs! It means loafers, because they are low cut, do not go over the ankle bone as a "whole" shoe would (apparently “Vollschuh" is a thing, but I’ve never heard it. https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schuhmodell).

Stag, good point that a dedicated clog maker probably knows how to do these best. However a lot of those seem 1) pricey for a style I’m iffy on, 2) a bit wide for my foot, 3) most are entirely backless, and 4) a lot of clog styles are not really what I’m after, style wise — i.e., I’m not a fan of the look of Danskos and the like for my purposes — a bit too utilitarian/“comfort” looking. The KDs were *exactly* the look I was after, and the width was great. Too bad the vamp was totally unyielding!

The AAs are my favorite out of the gate. I haven't been able to get my head around the whole clunky thing like the KDs, and the Borns seem high for you.
I still love my Hees, and Rachylou says off-brand clogs always work best for her. Since you don't want to dump a lot of money on this, that might be a way to investigate. There are lots of little companies that specialize in clogs. There's something about the nature of clogs and how they work with your foot that makes me think we're better off with a maker who focuses on them, rather than a big co that tries to carry what it knows from other styles over to clogs.

Janet, have you looked at Sven? The returns aren’t free, so there is some commitment that you might not want to make, but they have sooooo many options, you can choose heel height, base color, lined or unlined upper, etc.

Lisa, those are cute! $233 USD which is better but still a little higher than I’d like to spend on such a wild card too.

Sharan, those are really appealing! I don’t think I can do backless unless there is a little lip on the heel to help hold my feet in place — my current mules have that and it helps a lot. Let us know how those work out!

JK, I’ve now gone down the Charlotte Stone rabbit hole! Wow, there are some beautiful styles there. A little more than I’d want to spend, again. I love the look of the Jona sling back clog, but wish the studs were silver, not gold.

Oh well, as Angie says, onward! I have plenty of shoes already and boot season will be here before we know it!

I love the visible studs on the Andre Assous pair Janet.

Lisa I love the backless loafer you have ordered - interesting and unusual!

It was worth a try just so you know that they are not for you. The best thing is that it did not take a bad purchase to make you realise that. Unfortunately for me, it is often only after wearing shoes I realise that they do not work for my feet.
