Elly, I haven't made it to the SW corner yet. But I hear it's absolutely gorgeous! Pikes Peak is awesome too. I've been doing a lot of day trips this summer. So far I've made it to Leadville, Breckenridge, Vail, Idaho Springs, and a couple others. Really fun!

I'd say take bf's and the Levi's. You can totally sleep in one of your hiking outfits and/or base layers. Unless you really want ponte pants. Most everyone, locals and tourists, will be enjoying the town life, post-hiking activities in their hiking togs or jeans. But wear whats comfy for you! :)

Ha! Hope you get your boy sartorially sorted out :)

xo! Can't wait to hear about your mountain adventures!!

More excellent advice! Ketura, I'm taking bf jeans, but I'm adding in one more pair of pants -- either ponte (which can double for warm sleep wear, or a pair of Levi's straight leg. Going up to my room to decide right now..........having squared the kids away. My "kids" are 12, but they've never traveled like this before and boy child.....well, he needs some sartorial guidance.

WOW! You seriously nailed it, Beth Ann! Good call on the tech fabrics, colors, and mixing up the silhouettes. You'll look fab on those trails :)

I would add with Elly to add a collarless, long-sleeved running shirt or two. Unless you're worried about your neck (I just slather on sunscreen), it will be much cooler. The alpine sun is intense and scorchingly hot.

I'd also second the rain jacket, a fleece jacket or a comfy wool sweater; and some kind of base layer -- synthetic tech or smart wool . Avoid cotton for base layers. It holds moisture to your skin, not pleasant on a cold mountain night!

Do you also have some jeans? Those are great for when you're relaxing off trail for the evening.

Cant' wait to see the rest of your capsule!!! xo

Bring DH's rain jacket, an extra layer that will fit over and under. I live in the Rockies and it can be 85 during the day and 38 at night this time of year. Also, I highly recommend going to TJ maxx or the nike store and picking up one of those very lightweight l/S running shirts ----- instead of a collared sun shirt I find those are the coolest for keeping sun off the chest and arms and can serve as an additional layer in the evening in a pinch while the sun-blockers can be hot and sticky. I hope your boots work out -- I personally find those "transitional" boots rub on me or cause foot cramps. Personally I do 90% of my hiking in snug spandex jeans (mine are snug in the behind and thighs and so they don't chafe the way loose hiking pants do) with a pair of military issue boots, and the other 10% in running tights with trail runners on.

I echo everyone! You look fab in every outfit! I'm inspired. I'm heading out for a camping trip in a couple of days and haven't had time to give any of it a thought yet (but we camp fairly regularly.) My outfits are not coordinated, but we don't do the sight seeing it sounds like you'll be doing around other people. Have fun!

Gorgeous! I agree with others that you make gear look great! You are going to look great in your vacation photos!

You asked about rain gear and I wanted to recommend something other than the cheap ponchos they sell at camping supply stores. It's been my experience that they don't dry quickly, fit like a tent, tear easily and generally are a waste of money. I have a one-ply rain shell made by Columbia that packs down to about the size of a tennis ball. It has saved me more times than I can count.

Have a wonderful trip!

Great capsule! I'm so inspired now to work on my outdoor/gear capsule. I have gear for exercising - running, yoga, etc., that I usually try to make do double duty, but I think I need a few things just for hiking and camping. I'll be referring back to this post in the next couple months.

Brilliant, Beth Ann! I second your layered fleece idea. A vest is a good addition (synthetic or down or high tech), but I wouldn't take a winter coat. Do take a set of long johns (synthetic, wool, or silk). And bravo for the fleece hat (remember to sleep in it if you're really cold) and gloves. Got your pocket knife and a couple of bandanas? Have a terrific adventure!

Thanks, Gaylene. I have been looking for an appropriate shirt, but have not found one. I was shopping for one with SPF protection. Of course, I could just borrow one of DH's button downs. Low tech, but it might do the trick!

My shoes are a lightweight hiking shoe. My daughter chose trail runners. I've broken them in walking in my local forest preserves and it was a good thing I did this, since I had a blister from the insole and had to fix it with some moleskin and well fitting wool socks.

ABC: I enjoy planning, but I'm hugely indecisive, so making the final edits it excruciating! I need the photos for my own good --- I need to be able to dress in the dark, in the camper, so seeing these pictures will help me know that. My capsules are plenty of work in the doing, but they save me lots of time while I'm wearing them!

Your gear capsule looks good. My only suggestion would be a long-sleeved shirt. I prefer to hike in a long-sleeved shirt in the mountains because I can roll the sleeves up if I get warm or let them down if the bugs get bad or if the temperatures drop. I wear the shirt over a short-sleeve tech T, or a sports bra, depending on the temperature, so I can doff the shirt if I get really warm.

You might also consider a vest; my down vest packs in its own pocket, weighs only ounces, and is a cozy layer when the temperatures drop. And, as others have mentioned, a lightweight beanie and pair of gloves can also come in handy if the weather gets cool and rainy. Suz's suggestion of a pair of lightweight underwear is also a good one; I love my lightweight Icebreaker merino wool ones.

I also day hike in trail shoes these days, not hiking boots, unless I am carrying a full pack on rugged terrain. They are so much lighter and more comfortable--and my Gortex ones dry out quickly if they get wet.

Being outdoors is so good for the soul--and you'll be seeing some glorious country on your trip. Have fun!

Well, since I last logged on I have:

Made two dishes in crock pots and placed them in my little refrig freezer (so wish I had a big one) next to the 20 bottles of water (now ice) that will be placed in my cooler.

Said goodbye to the 6 tween girls who stayed over for my DD's birthday

Done 4 loads of laundy

Mended two tops

baked muffins for the trip

So nice to read such encouraging and helpful comments and, frankly, to do so while sitting down! I've appreciated each and every comment, although I'm not addressing each of you, since I've got miles to go before I sleep!

Several of you mentioned more cold weather gear: I do have another fleece that will make an appearance in my "To and From" capsule tomorrow, am carrying 2 pairs of gloves that I can layer, and a neckwarmer. I could take a mid weight coat, but I'd rather layer. I do not have long underwear, but I'm taking a pair of tights that can go under pants. I may pack a pair of ponte pants, too. I have amazing wool socks, and a good pair of Merrell hiking shoes.

I will try to keep you all posted! I'm so looking forward to looking up at the sky and seeing the 10,000 ft of granite pushing up to meet it!

You are going to make one stylish camper. Love the colors!
I hope you are taking proper hiking boots and not just running shoes - these are serious mountains and not to be trifled with!
And do take warmer clothing - mountains are cold at night even in summer. Warm sweater, hat and gloves can make the camping much more enjoyable! And woolen socks to sleep in!

I've never done anything remotely that outdoorsy, but that sounds like a fun trip and you look like you've got the clothes down pat!

I love the colors you chose for tops. They look a lot like what I go for whenever I need something gearish. The last pair of capris also look so much better with your alterations!

Wow, I don't look nearly so put together in my gear! I think it's time to think about upgrading my outdoor capsule, thanks for the nudge. You look fantastic and ready for anything.

Beth Ann, I am with Janet. My only argument is with your self-assessment. You make gear look positively worth wearing! You have chosen flattering colours and fits, practical styles, and you've even managed to sneak some variety of silhouette into the deal. I call it genius.

I am not a wilderness camper myself, but my daughter has just embarked on a 10 day canoe trip to Algonquin. Not the mountains, so not as cold at night (although it did dip to 5 degrees her first night in.) They recommended a specific sleeping bag, and for clothing -- long WOOL underwear (merino, Smartwool or similar); a fleece jacket (relatively light was okay for her); quick dry pants and shorts; two tees; one long sleeved shirt (could be the underwear layer); wool socks for the hiking; a brimmed hat (like a baseball cap); and a wool or fleece toque or beanie. Plus shoes of course. Oh- and waterproof rain gear!

It seems to me you have similar kinds of items except maybe for the underwear. If you own a thermal layer, why not pop it in for those colder nights? You probably won't need it, given that you run warm, but even so....never hurts to pack something as light and small as that.

This is my kind of wardrobe capsule! It all looks highly functional and it's very flattering too. We camp a lot every summer. I just started updating and replacing some of that wardrobe this year. Thanks for the inspiration!

Looks great! I do agree with the advice to add one more warmer layer. I would add a warmer fleece/jacket (something that makes you feel cozy when you wear it) and definitely some gloves.
