Angie, these posts are so helpful for me. I have always been a small wardrobe girl and mine has become too bloated. I am having a massive struggle with purging. I'm so greatful for your wisdom!

I can feel the crisp Autumn air in the mornings already despite our glorious hot and sunny weather.

Debs and others, I don't have a holding zone either.

A great eye opener. It's tough to balance how much to keep, when one desires a small wardrobe. Purge too fast, and you get purging regret. Don't purge enough, and you're wardrobe is filled with items you are just not using.

When I return from my trip it will soon be time for the closet switch out when I trade summer items for autumn ones. The joy test will guide the editing I always do during this changeover. Thank you.

Deborah -- I don't think a holding zone is a necessity. My goal has always been to be decisive about those items that fall out of favor. I rarely rescued anything from the holding zone anyway and realized it was just a middle step that wasted time and energy.

Thanks for the clarification. Your post make me realise I don't really have a holding zone any longer. More and more things go from my closet to the donate, give to a friend or sell pile.

This is so helpful, Angie. I've been wondering what to do with tops that I still like but that are too fitted to look modern. I was going to do Holding Zone, but maybe Temporary Hibernation is a better idea. Then they would be at hand for a layer under other pieces.

I have a gorgeous floral print Carmen Marc Valvo silk dress with dainty sequins outlining the leaves in the pattern. I haven't worn it in a few years but will keep it anyway. It is beautiful and I have fond memories of wearing it on the first vacation Tony and I went on together.

I have a shelf of painting clothes; two pairs of cropped pants, two tees and one old sweater. I also have one pair of gardening jeans that are a little better. Most of us need these pieces!!

The distinction between holding zone and temporary hibernation is key for me. TH might be grabbed at any moment; HZ can't be worn even if I want to.

Good reminder for me about "down and dirty" wear. Living in a houseful of men, it was all too easy to fill half a closet with a wardrobe of "camping/dog washing/ gardening/painting" clothes. I fit right in with my guys when I wasn't in my "going to work" clothes.

Come to think of it, that probably explains my lack of enthusiasm for distressed" jeans--i own too many pairs of the real thing...

Helpful clarification!

I keep my "grubbies" for painting, gardening, etc. together in one dresser drawer, separate from the rest of my wardrobe--wouldn't want to get paint or mud on my favorite things!

Some of the comments in this morning's post compelled me to clear things up on the forum:

Be careful not to confuse the Holding Zone with Temporary Hibernation. The former is out of sight – while the latter is still in your closet.

Clothing that does not fit needs be packed away into a Holding Zone – or passed on.

Clothes used for painting the house, crafting, yard work etc. don’t qualify as “proper clothing”. They aren't items you wear at all unless you have to get "down and dirt" so to speak.

A very basic guideline: If you have the closet space and the item sparks joy - keep it.
