One of the first things I had to get used to in Israel is having my bag checked on the way into malls and any other crowded venues. No clear bags, just open my bag and have it checked. To get on a train here you put your bag through a scanner like at the airport. Interesting that the US is relying on clear bags - it would be very uncomfortable to carry that plastic in the heat. Not that I have anything to hide, just that seeing all the “stuff” adds visual clutter I don’t want.</p> <p>Many places I go are ok with a very small bag (basically a wallet on a string), but I have eyeglasses and phone to carry, so often not optimal. Sports stadiums search anything larger than that. Concert venues like Anthem in DC do bag searches and metal detection. Part of the thrill of living near the nation’s capital, I suppose. Sigh.</p> <p>And the theatre where I have art displayed (right across the street from my studio) just had an incident during a production of Fiddler on the Roof that left patrons shaking, thinking that an attack was coming. I fully expect that theater will be considering increased security measures. I’m angry and sad that this is a thing. </p> <p>Rant over. Some of those bags are cute, and even a nice fashionable alternative.
