Isn't it wild? Some areas it's almost deafening! Mostly places where the trees are very old. They haven't been too invasive here even though they've increased in number (and volume) since last week. I think we are nearing peak cicada.

@Janet - they cling to every leaf and flower here. The weather was great over the weekend and we ate outside 2 nights. Cicadas were dropping from everywhere, on everything, including one on my plate. Our out of town visitors were horrified, but we're pretty used to this by now. It's interesting how the noise ebbs and flows. Walking under some trees the noise is so loud I can almost feel the vibration.

Ralphie apparently caught one, and wouldn't let it go - yuck. Glad I didn't witness it.

They’ve gotten louder and more prevalent here! My friends in some areas nearby have posted pics with cicadas covering the leaves of plants and trees and I’m thankful they are not that overwhelming at our house. Weird since we live on the edge of the woods. Our dogs are indifferent to them.

I remember the 17 year cicadas in the Washington DC area 17 years ago. They were terrible. The noise! You could not stand to be outside. I have. It heard a cicada yet in Colorado. Maybe it is too cold. But I remember and empathize.

I'm pretty used to the cicadas now. Just stepping over the squished piles, not frantically cleaning the sidewalks. When I was gardening last weekend, I disturbed quite a few of them and they are really loud when they get upset! I swear they're the size of hummingbirds. They cast shadows! The general collective sound is super cool to me. It's a hollow sound and there are times of the day that it is really loud.

The other evening I was on a Zoom call with high school friends who now live in PA, GA, AZ, NJ, and NY and I walked while we talked, and took them on a field trip to cicada-land.

Baltimore seems to be getting huge numbers, and so far Annapolis not so many...or maybe they’re just getting started!

I mostly find them fascinating, and the sound doesn’t bother me. The dogs don’t seem too interested in them so far, which is good, but a little surprising since Woody freaks out over turtles, chases frogs, gets bitten by copperheads, and looks like he wants to chase the birds he sees flying overhead. LOL

Here’s one from a walk a couple of days ago, and one on our backyard deck.

Yikes!! We have cicadas here but they don't seem to come in droves like they do further south ... And I've only ever see one cicada killer wasp; those things are massive!

We are in the midst of a gypsy moth infestation is southern Ontario.

Honestly, isn't the pandemic enough biological horror for now?!?!?

I'm a huge fan of the cicadas! I find them fascinating. I'm in DC, but we aren't having the numbers that DC's suburbs are seeing. Hopefully, our numbers will pick up here on Capitol Hill. This is my 3rd go-round with the 17-year cicadas.

When our kids had to defer their planned May 2020 DC wedding, their venue and vendors agreed to hold the same date in May 2021. They were about to pull the trigger on proceeding this month with a much more intimate outdoor celebration, then learned about the cicadas!

17 year cicada spans is an interesting way to think about life.
Laurie, if you are going to be a grandma, I bet you will be by the next time they emerge.
My strongest memory of cicadas is 2 cycles ago, when I was a university student. They remind me of the fellow I was dating, but I’m not sure why—he didn’t look like one! Well, apart from the bug eyes he didn’t. One cycle ago I was living in a DC suburb with my baby boy, learning I would be a single mother, writing a dissertation and teaching summer school. Not many memories of them that year—I was kinda busy. This year, we might encounter them while checking out universities—if they open up tours!

Still waiting here in the Midwest for the 17-year cicada to emerge. They are later then predicted...its like waiting for the horror movie to start...you know what’s coming.
I’m also thinking back to 17 years ago with my small children (who devised all kinds of play with the insects) and getting a little wistful.

Haha yes definitely science/horror, I admire and support your desire to observe with some objectivity! The emerging cicada shot is excellent!

There must be a variety that reappears more often because every year huge cicada killer wasps make dozens of burrows along our driveway and they do find victims to drag underground. They're scary looking but haven't stung anyone so I leave them alone although I do limit the span of the burrows.

The cicadas have emerged. It's really something. I am trying so hard to find it interesting, and not disgusting, but it's hard! They started coming out about 10 days ago, and now they're everywhere. This morning the sound is at a steady din. They're underfoot, all over the trees, and even cars.

These cicadas come out every 17 years. Last time, my boys were 5 and 9 and I thought that the next 17 years would be an eternity. Instead it was a blink. Not even able to think about where we'll be the next time they emerge.
