Since a couple of mentioned charity giving: Last week on NPR I heard about a "charity gift card" you can give to someone. You determine and spend the amount, but they get to choose the charity that it goes to after receiving the card. I really like that idea, especially if you're not sure what specific charity someone cares about most. I don't remember the name of the service, but here is an article with links: http://www.npr.org/templates/s.....d=17246541

Similarly to Nicole, I buy gifts that have to do with his hobby or interest. My father in law picked up running (at age 50 and is doing great!) so we bought him a nice running outfit and a subscription to Runner's World. My BIL is in the Air Force, currently based outside of the US. He is spending Christmas alone, so we got him an iPod shuffle ($50) and an iTunes gift card. Something to keep him company!
My dad is into books. He loves to read. He used to be a printer (think presses, ink, and stamps) so I scour used book stores to find old books about history or some other favorite topic. That way he can enjoy the book for the content and the design.
My sister's husband loves all things outdoor/fitness, and my other BIL loves ESPN. So that is easy.
Bryan and I got married two weeks after Christmas (nearly three years ago!) so we usually wait until January and do a combined gift.
And like Kyle, we always try to donate to a charity or two that has touched our lives somewhere along the way. As a young child I benefited from Toys for Tots and the Salvation Army and now that I'm older I try to give back. We also like to give to some animal charities since that is a big part of our lives now.

Maybe a collection of movies and/or music from their late teens/early twenties. Things that would bring back a lot of memories. Maybe a tee-shirt or sweat shirt from their Alma Mater. Do they like to golf? I've arranged tee times for my husband/father-in-law in the past. Tickets to a sporting event?

(We are doing a $100 limit and donating to charity. Too many people going hungry and we have more than we need.)

Myself and my boyfriend do the whole 'what do you want for xmas' thing. I'm getting Alan aftershave and a couple of cookbooks, and he is buying me new boots. Perhaps, it takes away the element of surprise but it still means that we get something we both want. As we both have such specific tastes and interests, it's impossible to guarantee we're getting the right thing for each other without guidance, and this is in spite of the fact that we both share the same hobbies of running, cycling and cooking.

For my family, we do a Secret Santa amongst the siblings. I am buying for my favourite sister, who is also in university doing a similar course to me, so I am giving her all my used relevant books and giving her a shoebox filled with silly things like tights, socks, lip gloss, scarf, etc.

Men are so hard to buy for sometimes!

This year my sister and I pooled our money to get "experiences" for our parents. A mushroom-hunting expedition and gourment dinner for my dad and stepmom, and a night away plus a dinner at a B&B for my mom and stepdad.

My husband's getting an ice-cream maker attachment for our Kitchenaid stand mixer for his combined birthday-Christmas gift (shh, dont' tell!), because he LOVES ice cream and this way he can make super-healthy and delicious raw vegan ice cream.

I think we're getting a scanner that transforms slides into digital photos for my father-in-law.

Brothers-in-law got National Geographic subscriptions.

In previous years we've often bought something special and indulgent for the guys, like a bottle of Calvados (his favourite) for my stepdad.

I think the idea of restaurant gift cards is great! Something like a beer-of-the-month club would probably go over well with certain guys, too. If you have more $ to spend, digital photo frames are popular.

I've found most men like practical, useful things (although, not all!). Brendan most definitely prefers a useful gift. I got him kitchen tongs for Christmas a couple of years ago, and he loved them. That is one of his favorite gifts he's ever gotten. (I would hate getting tongs for Christmas, lol). I was reading some women's magazine--Glamour, or Vogue, something like that--and it said that a good bet is to replace something they already have with something newer or better, because then you know they will use it. I thought that was a good idea. The article added that if the item is sentimental though, not to try to replace it. I think a magazine subscription is a great gift, because most of the time they are relatively inexpensive, but it's fun to get something over the course of the next year.

If a man likes a specific kind of cologne, instead of getting him that same kind, you could gather samples of some different ones that are similar, and then include a gift certificate to a place where he could buy a full size version of whichever he liked best. Sephora has something like this for women, and I think it's a neat idea. Or, you could find out which scent "family" the scent is in, and choose another from that same category--similar, but just a little different.

I think this year, I'm going to get Brendan a subscription to "New Scientist" magazine, some socks and underwear, and 3 video games. Not sure what else.

Nicole on "Christmas presents for man"

My husband is usually pretty easy to buy for. He is into bike riding and computer gadgets--so that really gives me a lot to work with. I usually ask his friends for specifics on bike items--because they ride with him and I'm sure he talks bike parts with them on a daily basis.

I usually do restaurant gift cards for the inlaws--because you do reach a certain age when you just don't want more clutter in your life. Consumable gifts are always a safe bet.

My dad is into his garden, so I usually get him something for his yard. Last year, I got him a beautiful bird bath. I have a funny anecdote about that gift from last year. He opened the gift, and didn't want to put it outside til Spring, so he stored it in the basement. Well my dad has severe memory issues, and he was afraid he'd forget he had it come spring. So he put a big note in his garden shed so he wouldn't forget about it in the spring. I thought that was so funny.

I try to think of things that are going on in a person's life. Like last year my step FIL was taking courses to get his Doctorate in math. He had this set up where he used his computer on the TV with a wireless keyboard and mouse. Every time I'd go over there, he'd have all his stuff spread out over the coffee table, hunched over it all trying to study and work. I found this handsome cart that could be wheeled up to the sofa, and he could put his keyboard and mouse and even some books or papers. He loved that gift and I'm thrilled to see it in use every time I go over there.

My husband alwasy compliments me on my thoughtfulness of gift giving. (I think he compliments me so he wont have to take over the gift giving process). He'd be the guy looking for Christmas gifts in the gas station convenience store on Christmas Eve.

I have a very hard time with men in my family (my husband and my dad) - they are minimalistic but at the same time very particular *sigh*. Neither uses aftershave or cologne or any other cosmetic items. I usually resort to books, tickets, subscriptions, gift cards (for things like massage)... also slippers have been a hit. I never buy them clothes. I would love to hear others' ideas too!

Hi Girls,
Every Christmas I am fighting the same uneven fight:what to buy for the men in the family??
How to get away from the usual aftershave/tie/books/dvd routine?
I am cruising the shops again and again to find it so impossible to come out with something original If you have any ideas, or feel like sharing how you organize it in your families I will be grateful for advise!
