We just went to the pet store and picked up a bottle of spray that's supposed to be to keep cats off shrubs. I figured that if it works on shrubs, it will work on an artificial Christmas tree, and it did. I can't remember the name of it to save my life.

Cute story! Our dog is not interested in the Christmas trees (there are currently 3 in our house) and the cat isn't either. Usually our cat is interested and enjoys climbing the trees but I haven't seen her even near the trees this year. The toddler though is a whole other story...He loves taking the ornaments off the trees.

Thank you! We bought the tree from the Boy Scouts. We always try to get an open tree because of our ornaments. I think about half are handmade by me or a family member or a friend. The rest were bought over the years, while we were on vacation, or someone gave it because it had special meaning, such as some of the birds, dogs and musical instruments.

I love the pet stories, too! I thought our dog was a freak until I heard of other dogs doing this too.

jaileen, you do indeed have lovely ornaments. I love your tree. Did you cut it down ? It doesn't look like a tree farm tree.

All the dog/cat stories are so funny! My only problem with dogs has been wagging tails knocking off the low-hanging ornaments. Also dogs inexplicably chewing open Christmas presents (no food in them).

A leopard sleeping bag sounds very cozy. Both of our dogs like toys. This one likes to rip them apart, whereas the other one like to walk around with it in his mouth like a lovey. It's sad when his favorites are ripped to shreds.

Yes, dangerous, especially if you're a rodent or a stuffed toy. I bought them new toys for Christmas. The top one is another otter. The label is a joke: rethink durability.

What a great story about your dog. I wonder if he thought the glass ornaments were birds. I often wonder what is going on in their heads, what they are thinking about, etc. The two dogs we have now are, relatively speaking, easy dogs, for terriers anyway. A Jack Russell we had earlier was very difficult. A trainer came to our house and I learned a lot about how they think. It's mostly about catching things!

Beautiful tree and fun story about your naughty boy. Literally 40 plus years ago, my mother had lovely hand-blown glass bird ornaments on our tree and our springer spaniel puppy kept removing them and carefully carrying them about in her mouth. My father was thrilled by this because it indicated she had a "soft mouth," desirable in bird-hunting dogs. My mother was not happy about her precious ornaments and also worried that should one break, our dog could be seriously hurt. The compromise was these ornaments went on a smaller table top tree safe from the dog and less breakable felt ornaments replaced them. I haven't thought about that in years. Thanks for that fun memory.

I'm sure he would have eviscerated the ornaments if we hadn't noticed right away. Below is one of their "toys". It used to be an otter, now missing its ears, nose, tail, paws, and all stuffing.

Your pup is only a little naughty. My babies would have unstuffed those in no time flat! I think you already have the right idea to prevent this in the future. We have to make sure any stuffed ornaments are hung high on the tree so our dachshunds can't reach them. And by "high" I mean 2 feet up! Haha. We use glass ornaments (shapes, not balls!) work on the lowest branches. Beautiful decorations, by the way!

Well, if it makes you feel any better, one of our cats likes to get up and sit in our tree. We haven't even put ornaments on, for fear they'll get broken. I'm not even sure we'll keep the tree up. We may have to take it down. Last year we sprayed the tree with something that prevents cats from wanting to get near it, and it worked. Unfortunately, we don't have any this year, and I've told my DDs to try to find some at the pet store. Ugh!

Beautiful tree. I love a cherished assortment of ornaments.

Years ago, I had a cat who had a thing for just one particular ornament. It was a green Grinch with a red hat. No matter where we put him on the tree, the cat would find him (and only him), pluck him off and put him in the toilet. I was sure it was my toddler until I caught the cat doing it. Of course, it then became an annual tradition to try to hide the Grinch from the cat;-) Oddly, he never once tipped over the tree in his Grinch hunt.

We haven't put up a tree in several years. Our son and his girlfriend will be here for Christmas. His girlfriend has never celebrated Christmas before and is very excited. So we felt obliged to decorate. I love our collection of ornaments. Here are a few pics:

1) & 2) our tree; 3) knitted snowflakes, 4) our great blue heron getting festive (wearing a cat hat from Petco).

A new situation has developed: one of our dogs has started stealing ornaments off the tree. 5) the ornaments he has stolen off the tree. He's taken the bird off twice! At first we thought they had fallen off, but this morning I witnessed him stealing the snowman! 6) The defendant trying to look innocent.
