Very, very nice! Excellent choice. They look so classic and timeless peeking out from under your trousers, but if you wear them with skinnies or some other way that shows off the bootie tops, they will show as on trend and giving a very modern vibe. You will get tons of use out of them.

I have new boots!

I actually went for a different pair of boots in the end - these:

http://www.johnlewis.com/104696/Style.aspx

I had overlooked them on my initial search of the website, I think because of the way the tops are a little high and slouchy, but obviously you can't see that under trousers, and they were by far the most comfortable of all I tried on. The heels are 1.75 inches, which is pretty much perfect for me, and I actually love the subtle ruching detailing! And as someone said earlier, the round toes are comfy too. I'm delighted with them - thanks to everyone who chimed in and helped me decide what I wanted.

Thoughts please?

I think even when the ruching becomes dated, which will be who knows when, its not SO over-the-top in styling that it will look out of place...its a very subtle style that should last a good long time...I really like #1 and # 2

firefly, I hear you on the concern that the ruching might date quickly. But think of it this way ~ you're looking at some classically styled black ankle boots that have a little twist, the ruching. It's subtle enough that I think you can wear them even when ruched footwear's heydays are over. I really like styles #1 and #2. I love style 3 just for the "hoochie" name!

Thank you all for the feedback. My only worry is the possibility that the ruching detailing might become dated relatively soon, but I suppose there's no way to tell in advance.

I like #1 best, this style looks very fresh and new. But the rounder toes looks quite comfy. Another plus for this shoe. #2 is my second fave, as this shoe is similar in style to #1, but if you wanted a slightly wider heel, then go for these. I don't care for #3, this style looks the most dated as Shana said above.

I like 1 & 2 the best. Number 3 looks a little dated with more of a square stacked heel as well as squarish toe shape. I also have a personal aversion to shoes with the seam running down the middle! I like the ruching - it adds a modern touch and also an interesting texture!

My beloved square-toed black ankle boots that I've been running around in for years, and have been to the cobbler more times than I'd care to tell, are finally starting to look like they're coming to the end of their lives. It's time to find replacements!

I've only just started my new job so money is still tight. However I have some John Lewis (UK dept store) vouchers that I can use, so I've been looking on the website. I'd welcome some thoughts on what I've found so far.

I should point out that I am emphatically not a skirts or dresses girl, so they would only be worn under trousers. I would need them to be smart enough to wear for work, and probably on the conservative side. I'm drawn to black as a strong statement but am aware I might be stuck in a rut/going for the 'safe' choice.

Funnily enough, all the ones I've picked out have ruching detailing. Is this a good look? Please fire away!
