Black! Can be dressed up or down. The striped one I feel is a tad trendy. That said, I have lots of trendy items including striped tunics and dresses, but I have a cream sweater dress that looks a lot like the black one you found and I find it very very versatile.

Wool covered hams...hmmm... now there's a look I haven't tried!
I'd vote for the black - more versatile and I like the cable details too.

i would also try both one for the thickness of the fabric. while i love the look of chunky knits, the sleeves on these cabled babies would make my mature arms look like wool covered hams.

For a first sweater dress, I'd go with the solid colour.

Thanks for the advice! Mo, I probably would never wear it without a belt. I've never worn a sweater-dress before because I do think that they can look sack-like and unflattering but for $44, I'm willing to give it a try. Grewitch, I'm just starting to love stripes and color too. I'm very much a neutral girl for winter but I've been trying to buy more colorful accessories.

Marvel Girl, would love to see these on you! I personally prefer the black cowl neck sweater dress, but getting me to like color and stripes is an ongoing battle!

I like the black cowl because the cabled detailing helps differentiate the top from the skirt. Keeps it from possibly looking 'sacky' in my opinion, particularly when worn without a belt.

Loft is doing 50% off dresses and so I've decided to finally buy a sweater-dress. Which do you prefer? I like the added detail of the stripes but I'm also drawn to the more classic shape of the solid cowl neck.
