Hi anne

Oh, I'm glad I posted then! I ordered through the above website - it's the same company, just via an Australian web page. (Sorry, I was a tad dopey and posted the NZ website before).

I can tell you I had absolutely NO problems ordering. I even had to return two items (didn't fit) and that was easy peasy and the money was deposited back into my account within a week. I really was very impressed.

Like I said, they are washing and wearing very well and my boys give them a very tough work out!

Have fun shopping. x

Jsloane, we go through a lot of leggings too, and use them in similar ways!

Thanks Katiepea, that site looks really good. In fact think they may have exactly what I am after and I am very tempted to order some if my trip to Kmart/Big W doesn't work out. Is there any issue relating to ordering from an NZ site?

Hi Anne

What about the brand Charlie and me? They often have sales and you can get some good deals. I've bought clothes for my boys and I've found the clothes to be quite hard wearing.

I buy a LOT of children's clothing (albeit from US so not sure how it translates for you) I get leggings at great prices from Gap, Gymboree and Lands End. I love Hanna Andersson because it wears amazingly well and can be resold, but is pricey. I constantly shop these for plain leggings (and bike shorts for cooler weather) to be worn under tops and dresses. Sweaters get worn so rarely I almost always buy from consignment sales (as with jeans). Landsend has great ones in overstocks with coupon codes. H&M is also good for basics. I LOVE Boden, but only buy a few standout items at super discount or trade with mom groups online. Ebay is a great source if you know your DC sizes in certain brands.

Anne, what about ebay? I used to find so much clothes BNWT (Brand New With Tags) for all ages, admittedly much more before than now. I don't live near anyone who can hand me things down so sources like that are useful. Or "nearly new" sales as they are called here, organized by parenting groups.

But, on-line (whichever way) or in-store my best sources are Marks&Spencer for their ratio of quality/price, Pumpkin Patch is great too although they do colors a bit muted for my taste (and my boy looks best in bold colors like both parents )

These are no Aussie brands, but I know M&S do have stores overseas, perhaps in Oz too?

Supermarket chains here do nice children's clothes, and I do sometimes stock up there, but I always cringe when I think how on Earth could something be produced in, say, China, shipped all the way to the UK, sold for as little as £4 (and still overpriced because in no time it'll be marked down) and STILL make profit...

I must admit, life is much easier now that 5 days of the week we only take care that school uniform is clean and tidy, which effectively leaves us with the need for weekend-worth change of clothes (but covering various types of events, from casual to dressy, e.g playgroups to going to concerts. Minimalist wardrobe is so much easier to manage!

Hi Anne. I'm cruising by again to suggest you try Landsend.com. They cater for the whole family and have homewares as well. It's a very easy site to navigate. Freight from the US is about $30.00Au on a total order of $100-$150. That might seem like a lot until you have a look at the prices. In Australia we don't have to pay any duty. I only ever buy on sale(overstocks) and the quality is so much better compared to Target. I always buy several items at the one time to spread the cost of freight. You can return purchases to an address in Sydney if you're not completely satisfied.

Do you have a Big W or a Kmart near you? Along with Target, they'd be a good place to look for a little cardi or two. I like Pumpkin Patch too (for my nieces, not me!) and although they're on the exxy side, they should be having a sale this time of year.

Vanessa is an only child, granddaughter and niece so gets bought a lot. In the UK I used EBay a lot to buy good quality clothing in colours other than pink! However, now we are in the very messy weaning phase and there is not a lot out there.

A thought I had is if you know someone in the UK, then even with postage, H&M might be cheaper than purchasing in the Uk.

Thanks Patty. You understand only too well!!

I am happy to report that I bought 2 pairs of leggings, 2 pairs of shorts, one pair of summer PJs and an opshop pair of winter PJs today. No joy on the cardis or tracksuit pants but perhaps if the weather continues to heat up we won't need them for a while anyway.

We get alot of hand me downs for my soon to be 9 tomorrow daughter(!) I know what you mean by overwhelmed!! Sometimes is seems I just get two bags of stuff to the Goodwill that I get a call that 4 bags are coming my way. There goes my "feeling like I accomplished a clean out" feeling!!!
My boys have pretty much out grown their hand me down cousins so we are now on our own for them.
I do like to go out and get few new pieces that to me is just HER's--something that reminds me of her, something that speaks to me of her--that usually keeps me on the straight and narrow for purchases. And the thrift shop--she loves going there and getting an armful of stuff except it's not usually the much worn out stuff from your list tho.

Yeah-- I would head to a used clothing store for the cardis, and if they aren't to be found there, somewhere inexpensive like target, ect.

When we were children, the only new clothing we ever had was leggings and pyjamas. These things are so cheap and disposable there is no reason that your kids shouldn't get new ones and even get to come along to pick them out (that was our "big shopping trip").

The little boy's department is a great place to by track pants for everyone-- cheap, comfy, and then you can pass them on to all the kids where pink ones you couldn't.

I'm in my 20s and still buy men's track pants (I'm tall) for sport and around the house and my teenage brother STILL steals them.

If you can shop locally by yourself at places that will take returns, it might be easier than taking the children with you. You could buy several sizes of leggings or tights and figure of which ones will fit at home.

I was always handed down a lot of great things too, and shopped second hand for the rest. But some things you just have to buy new (socks, undies, etc.) and the prices always astounded me! At least the the cost all averaged out in the end. What I saved on the clothing I spent on the "accessories". :)

It's wonderful that you can identify the holes and make a list for cardigans and such.. Then you can pass along the extra orphans to make your life easier.

The kind of things you need for your daughters are the very things that children wear out so don't get passed on, except for the cardis. They tend to get lost. Do you have garage sales? Sometimes if someone has things out in your daughters' size you might tell them what you are looking for and they often have something they haven't put out. It also takes work. Target might be your best source.

We are definitely part of a handmedown network - that is why I am so unused to buying them much stuff at all. I get given heaps. And they hand down clothes to each other too. It is just that sometimes things wear out unevenly and there are occasionally holes.

It is more than a psychological hangup. I kind of want to buy them some new stuff and go shopping for them, and we can afford it. But I am also a bit freaked out by it too. And online shopping and op shopping is more of a challenge for me than the usual sort. We do have opshops in our town and I visit them occasionally (eg last winter, when I needed a raincoat for my daughter and it was too late in the season for Target to have any)

I'm not sure, Anne. Over here many people do swap children's clothes with parents who have younger children. New clothes are often bought at reasonably priced stores like H&M, these have fun and trendy items, and the quality is usually good enough to make them last one season (after that they've grown out of them anyway).

I hope you'll be able to fill the wardrobe holes soon;-)

Is there no op shop nearby? That's the place for filling those wardrobe holes. Also, my grandkids' mums are part of a merry-go-round of hand-me-downs, via family, kindy, play gym and so on. Would be nice if you could tap into a network like that. And there are the baby markets and ebay as well. So there really lots of options for getting hold of nice stuff without paying the earth.
