Kudos on achieving goals! And the socks are super cool looking. I'm very impressed. I hope for you and your clients' sakes that your work burden eases up soon.

Oh, wow -- you are a *new* knitter and you made those socks? They look fabulous! Such pretty colours and perfect for your wardrobe.

As someone who wears almost exclusively denim, navy, and grey (or silver) all winter -- welcome to the club! These are restful, cohesive, and easy to wear neutrals that work in so many settings (depending on the item, of course) for me. I can't imagine what I would do without them!

The mental health problems of the youth are REAL. I don't deal with it as a health professional of course but I see it in my students. There is not a single student in my writing class who does not suffer from mental health issues and most of them have designations from the Centre for Assisted Learning (which they can only get with a professional's diagnosis ). The pandemic has been so rough on that age group.

Robin F, I just joined Ravelry and am trying to learn how to use the website. I have added a few patterns to my library as potential projects but have not started them. So far, my projects have come from either pattern books I purchased or single patterns purchased at the local yarn store. Since I participate in a knitting group once a week, I get to see the projects other people are working on, and sometimes people trade patterns, etc. I haven’t used “magic loop” method for socks. I used wood DPNs for the socks so the yarn didn’t slide off as easily…. For my birthday, I received a book printed by Interweave, called “Operation Sock Drawer”. Wow! Very pretty socks, and what appear to be some challenges for me as a newish knitter! I plan to try to work my way through the book, although not in order.

I promised myself to limit my knitting to two projects at a time. One pair of socks and one additional project. I just started to knit a turtleneck sweater. The pattern says “Blur Shibui Monochrome”. I picked a sock pattern from the book and still need to get sock yarn. I’m looking for a solid color because I think it will look nice with the cable texture.

Love your socks. I also like to knit but lately find myself starting projects but not finishing them. I like doing socks with the "magic loop" method. No ladders like I got using DPN's and not as fiddly. Do you get your patterns from Ravelry? Fun website.

Thanks for the details on your knitting techniques! I only sew (very badly) so kudos!

I hear you - It would be lovely to have a wardrobe full of neutral workhorses instead of placeholders, but sometimes we just need to get dressed & go on with our day!

Speaking of which, thank you for all that you do - I know how tough it can be being in a caring profession these days.

Staysfit, those are wonderful socks. I have never learnt to knit. My English grandmother knitted me a number of jumpers (sweaters) when I was a very young child and so I associate handknits with my memories of her. I have a few cherished handknits that I have been able to buy from a local knitting shop.

Cool socks. I always wish I had persevered in learning to knit.
well done on your tracking wears. I have always understood the practicality and economy behind it but interesting that Jenni pointed out how it makes things more sustainable. I find it quite hard to track as I'm not a good diary person and if it was on an app I think it would be easier for me to do as I do track my fasting on an app.

Oh Staysfit I am sorry to hear about the extra mental health issues of the youth. Yes we are seeing that here in NZ too but as my practice has a wide range of ages and now that I am a bit older myself it has somewhat aged with me, so, as new younger patients are less likely to seek me out now, I am somewhat shielded from this change.
No need to respond to this explanation therefore, but FYI it was Jenn from this forum who taught me in 2017 about the #30 wears challenge that was spearheaded by both Livia Firth and also the author of the book “To Die For”-which is an examination of the fashion industry’s effect on the environment. The challenge merely suggests that when you buy a clothing piece you plan that you will wear it at least 30 times rather than less, so as to reduce churn. I have read in many other places that the average wears pieces get is only 7. I know that seems incredibly low.
Using this marker to try to be more sustainable myself has really helped. Of the 24 items I edited out of my closet last year, 23 had had over that number of wears and were now either too worn, or too big, or I no longer liked. The one that did not was a pair of pink high heeled sandals with 12 wears, which somehow with my weight loss had got floppy on my feet. They were still in very good condition when donated.

JAileen, this sock pattern is from Churchmouse using Regia sock yarn. I haven’t heard of Lorna’s Laces?

Thanks Rachy! Tracking wears, while eye opening, is definitely an extra challenge. I admit to taking some shortcuts that the more hardcore trackers on the forum might not…..for example, I wear denim so often that I stopped specifying which pair of jeans I am wearing unless they are atypical for me in color or cut. For any straight or skinny leg, I just document “jeans”.

Zaeobi, I agree. I have a harder time mixing and matching colors in a complementary (for me) way. However, I truly love the colored items in my wardrobe. Every one of them sparks joy. There are no placeholders, etc. I’m not sure I can say that about the neutrals.

Star, thanks for stating this so nicely. I plan to continue for now and hope it will eventually feel less tedious.

Jenni NZ, I have been very busy recently, and less able to write comments to forum members. As is reported by others in my profession, I am personally observing an unprecedented uptick in the nature and severity of mental health concerns among the youth I treat. Many mornings, which is when I often take time to read, write, exercise and scroll through YLF, I am already facing one or more urgent concerns. I endeavor to have as few of the youth I treat need emergency room care since the local ER’s are swamped. So, my medication coordinator and I spend the early mornings rearranging the schedule so as to accommodate extra appointments…….

Clearly, the items getting the largest number of wears are my jeans. I am not sure how many because I have not added enough detail to my tracking to learn, however, I appreciate your reminder that you aim for at least 30 wears on each item. You may have explained why you do this in the past? I do not recall.

Sisi, Thanks! I have previously been intimidated about making socks. The easiest part of these was choosing the yarn! I love the colors! I am truly proud of everything I learned while knitting these socks and of the end result! I used double pointed needles (dpn’s) for these. Tensioning the yarn was tricky. I held too tight on the first sock. I switched to English style knitting (I have used Continental- German or Norwegian previously), which resulted in more uniform stitches with better tension. I learned German Short Rows, which for those who do not know, is a way of creating shaping without leaving jogs in the knitting- it leaves a smooth diagonal. I used Kitchener stitch to close the toe. Kitchener stitch is a weaving process using a tapestry needle and the end of the yarn (like sewing) such that the end result looks like a smooth row of knitting.

I am in awe in front of your knitting skills. I know that socks are particularly difficult to knit. Those are beautiful! Vaguely Missoni-esque. Compliments for meeting your goals. I am excited for you about the beach vacation!

Great to hear from you! I wondered how you were doing quite recently. As you know I have been tracking for years, on paper. I started in May 2016 so it is almost 6 years. I still use it to help me decide what to wear, a bit. Today I was picking between two olive tops and thought oh yes, I will wear the olive and gold striped one because that hasn’t had 30 wears yet and the plain one has had over 30.
I am just beginning to get tired of doing it and considering stopping but still not sure if I need it as a management tool!
So glad it is helping you, and they are lovely socks.

Tracking wears really is an eye-opener. I noticed the same as you, I wear a lot more plain neutrals than I thought, and it seems to stave off shopping urges. I review my whole wardrobe list regularly now - and it really feels like 'shopping my wardrobe'. It has helped me realise what I have too much of and where there are potential needs. It also helps without outfit building. I am going to keep doing it as it really works for me. Love your socks!

Whoo, those are great socks for first attempt! And they'll go great with the grey & navy you like to wear

Despite seeming colourful all the time, I also go through phases too - sometimes it's nice to just pull on an outfit of neutrals (or pseudo neutrals, in my case) without having to worry if it 'goes'.

Oh your socks are so good!

Hmm. I’m wonder what I’d learn if I tracked wears. Do I wear what I think I do?

I like grey and navy, too. Nice socks! I knit a similar pair from Lorna’s Laces which has apparently gone out of business. Let’s see your sweater!

Hello YLF friends! I made a few simple goals for 2022.

1. To improve what my DD aptly called my single item functional fashion fixedness, I have been actively tracking wears (almost every day) and playing with new combinations. I find myself wearing much less color than I imagined. Most work weeks I wear only 1-2 colorful outfits. I am very happy with grey and navy although this may change in Spring.

An unexpected benefit of tracking wears seems to be that I am less interested in adding much to my wardrobe.

2. I have participated in a weekly knitting group (all of us in masks). I made my first top down sweater (Rowan tweed) and my very first pair of hand knit socks.

3. I purchased Athleta swim shorts that will work well for a beach vacation along with one of their mix and match swim separates bikini tops.
