I have a range of colors that I like and more often than not buy a new item that is in the same color( and undertone) that other items in my closet.
I am a big collector of scarves and take my "clues" in color coordination from them. Sometimes I also use the pattern of other items of clothing.
Winners is a good place to find scarves and bags.
I guess it also depends of what kind of complements you like, are they scarves/shoes/ bags?

I started with grey and blue, and was very strict about not adding anything in other colors. I did this for four or five years. Then I added pink, a sort of pale rose. Just recently I’ve added olive. Not dark olive, but a little lighter. Not counting coats, I have booties, slip on sneakers, bag, a couple sweatshirts, and a few tops. Everything was on discount, so not a lot of money. Olive, BTW, seems to be having a moment right now. I think these colors, except for blue, have staying power in my wardrobe because they relate to me personally - grey hair, pink skin tone, hazel/army green eyes.

I fly by the seat of my pants here, as in all aspects of my life - lol. I've been a colour capsule person forever, and it's usually developed over longer periods of time. For example, I started my olive green accessories collection with a Coach bag and matching wallet 6-7 years ago, added in a huge woven wool scarf a couple of years later, an outdoor jacket here and there, another cross body bag last year, and now olive sneakers this past summer. In and out of that capsule have been olive suede boots and several other silk scarves. The same goes for a grouping of cognac things I own. I don't set out to complete or put together a capsule at any given time - when it happens, it happens. Jewellery usually has little to do with it, as the only colour comes from a very specific line of earrings I collect but don't wear every day. Not that I'm a shopping or price snob, but I don't collect or buy low-end accessories just to try out a colour . If anything I go higher end on accessories than my clothing . I agree with a few others above me in this thread who buy something like a sweatshirt or basic sweater in order to try out a new colour. I've had success developing new colour stories based on a colour in a multi coloured sweater or blouse I've bought , too.

Actually Carla I wanted to add, and notice Slim Cat does this: I like to use earrings as part of the colour complement for sure. Can’t remember if you wear them. For me some coloured shoes, a print top with that colour in, and earrings the same colour as the shoes, would be perfect.

I do believe I’m entirely in the whimsical camp these days. I’ll buy one thing and mix and match, and see if the colour sticks with me. If it does, only then do I consider adding pieces for a monochromatic look or a little bit of matching. I think one too many times I’ve become enamoured of a colour only to decide I don’t like wearing it.

I think it is fun to experiment with a new colour and I am interested to see how you get along.

I am not particularly intentional with my compliments - I play it by ear. I think this is for a couple of reasons - I do wear a fair amount of print so often have prints that will work, I am intuitive with colour and also happy to just have one piece in a colour, and lastly, that my wardrobe is full of essentials and statements, with not a lot of compliments at all. What I do have tend to be shirts or sweaters that I wear with denim.

In saying that, I do have a blush capsule, a camel/caramel capsule and a small yellow capsule. They are a mix of shades - not all matching.

Blush - one pair oxfords, two tops, two scarves.

Yellow - one bag, one blazer, one skirt, one top, one scarf

Caramel/toffee/camel - one bag, five pairs of shoes, one sweater, one coat, one jacket, one scarf

SarahD8 is right on target that these two will work well together!

Color in my wardrobe is entirely by chance, but I seem to have pretty consistent tastes, so the cape gooseberry/mustard colors of my new raincoat that seemed like such a departure from my classic berries turn out to have been present at least as long ago as when I was pregnant with DS. Oranges are similar, as seen in these finds. Assembling the berry basics in the first place was intentional, but it was based on observation of what I already had. All the blues, particularly all the bright blue, are because I find it hard to resist. The fuchsias and frost pinks were "exceptions" I thought I was making just one time, until I realized how many of each had collected.

I try new colors via a t-shirt or a silk tank, and see if they take. If they do, then I add them to the list to watch for key pieces on sale. That’s how I have a single cerise top, a single mustard top and a couple of dusty colored tops in the mix, with no supporting act, they were my fails. I limit myself to adding one bag color each year, and when I am shopping slowly work through a list of core items for each color until I am set. What the core items are differs depending on whether the color is a new neutral, or an accent color, and the season of wear. Some seasons I find a lot from my list, and others I barely shop because the colors or silhouettes are off.

I'm very intentional with color! This year I've been adding darker browns, which I like more with my teals, greens, purples than black. To round out this capsule, I still want to add wide leg trousers (maybe tweed), and sandals (maybe low contrast snake or leopard). Not shown I have ponte pants and a long sleeve T in dark brown too.

Carla, one place I often find a 'cheap' complement completer is Zara. I love their basic knits and often find the right colour to add to a capsule. I had purchased this mint skirt and blouse, and found a matching sweater at Zara.

I guess mine have started serendipitously in the past. I know the olive did, way back in 2013 with a pair of pants that are now long gone. But I think I had liked the colour before, and in fact later remembered I had a corduroy “newsboy” style cap I had bought as a teenager in that colour.
Also my beautiful green sandals I got by themselves when I had nothing else. This is a brighter green, not olive. But then late last year I saw the “blurred floral” top with the exact same green. The sandals were on sale very cheap. The top was expensive.

Carla, a new colour added to my wardrobe usually starts with one piece that I fall in love with. Before buying, I will think if it works with other colours in my wardrobe as well ( black, white, blue, pink, red, mint and denim). For example, my orchid bag started my small collection of items in or with this colour:
1. Bought the bag
2. Dress with orchid in the print - bought the same day as the bag
3. Uniqlo top - bought about 6 months later on a trip to Japan and I bought two, because I immediately knew it would be a workhorse.

Other items in Finds are not the same colour, but tonally tie in, purchased subsequent to the bag and worn with it.

I used to collect jewelry in interesting colors that not necessary my favorites - mostly earrings, bracelets. Next were scarfs and tees with prints that included my colors and some experimental ones.
I could never intentionally build a compliment capsule - tried some time ago with olive green and gave up.
The newest fun color addition were crocus colored sneakers from Ecco.
I have couple earrings in very similar shade, graphic white tee with some lavender print and multicolored scarf that could go together.
Most of the time I mix pale blue with crocus sneakers or just ignore the miss match of colors .
I hope to find some extra pieces in the same color but not sure about success.

I agree that adding a new color can be really hard, especially if the color is not readily available. I think in terms of a column of color and the season in which I want most to wear the new color. Usually I have at least one piece that can be used. Do I need a top, bottom or topper?
That is where I start. Right now I want to add a neutral capsule of light, warm browns. Mostly this capsule is to wear in autumn and spring. I need a pair of full length ,pull on, pants and maybe a skirt. I usually leave accessories, including footwear, to last. I ideally would like both an outer and inner column of color, the outer being a matching bottom and topper, inner being a bottom and matching top. The next step is to get a print top or skirt. I may add heavier pieces in the same color like a sweater or heavier bottoms like a heavy ponte knit or wool to extend the season of wear. This system has usually worked well for me. I hope this helps. I admire your wardrobe building skills and wish you luck in this.

If there is a new color I am interested in, I start with less expensive items, a scarf, a tee shirt or sweater, perhaps a bag. Recently I've done that with cream. The one time I started with a bang—an expensive silk midi in navy blue—was a bust. Lesson learned.

I love building my wardrobe around colors! In 2018, pastels started to appear at retail, and I decided to focus on lilac, pale blue, and yellow. I have collected those colors and am going to seek out items as long as retail provides them. I didn't too that well with yellow, probably because I don't find it flatters me. So having a pair of yellow shoes and a matching bag is a good way for me to do that color. Just this year I purchased a few rust items (during NAS) but am not sure how deeply I want to commit to that color yet. But to answer your question, I didn't dip my toe in the waters with accessories exactly although I often start with a tee shirt because that is a foundational item for me.

ETA why isn't pale blue a good color on you? If you are afraid of it washing you out, wear dark framed specs or darker lipstick or a darker jacket/accessories.

Carla, teal is a colour I’m very committed to, so I have built up a capsule intentionally over a number of years. I’m always on the lookout for teal! Sometimes the finds are serendipitous - like my teal bag and teal flares. But sometimes I self help too.

Examples:
* I had a teal beaded necklace custom made by an Etsy seller.
* I have various items that I have dyed teal, including the tie dye tee shown below and the repurposed skirt.
* I had a teal ring custom made by an Etsy seller (no photo).
* I had a teal wrap top custom made by an Etsy seller. (Etsy items tend to be inexpensive, and I like that it supports small scale producers and artisans around the world.)
* I recently bought a light teal patterned (custom) t-shirt from Red Bubble to wear with jeans and my teal sneakers. For that I actually searched through teal floral designs on Red Bubble. Their tees are inexpensive, and designs are interesting, so this is also a cheap way to add to a capsule. As I understand it, Red Bubble also supports local artists. (Mine was designed by an artist in Canada actually.)

Plus I look at the men’s department, because their stuff is always cheaper and often made of organic fibres.

I have a lot of trouble building complements, despite knowing exactly what colours work for me and which I would most like to add!

I managed to build a burgundy complement when burgundy was trending a few years ago. I still have many of the pieces, and can also combine them with other berries and reds for tonal effects.

But honestly? That's it.

I've tried with fire engine or blue red. No luck.
Tried with orchid. Ditto.
Tried with royal or cobalt. Eh...

I had a teeny mustard complement (bag, gloves, patterned scarf, footwear) and that was fun, but did not last -- footwear proved unworkable and so it all foundered).

I need to work harder at this!!

@ Brooklyn - hopefully, no pressure - but how did you assemble your teal capsule that includes that amazing bag? Was it purpose built or serendipity?

I am very careful about adding new colours because I am not a great colour mixer and very few colours actually suit me. I find accessories like coloured necklaces, rings and bracelets a “safe” way to fill out a complement.

I think you are right about the cheaper ways to introduce colours.

I really like orange but didn't think it suited me but recently found a t-shirt in a bright orange. I have discovered that I love the colour so I might see if I can find some accessories in the same colour.
Like Tanya, some colours I have liked but not sure if they suited me I have introduced those colours away from my face and I don't wear them as a bold colour. Like i will have pink in a dress but not a solid pink because even though I like the colour I don't think it is me.
Also like Shevia, as I thrift a lot I find that a cheap way to get clothes in colours I might be experimenting with. Then if I really like the colour I will go and spend more on piece in that colour. I'm still getting used to wearing more colour so I am watching this thread with interest.

Looking forward to see your new round of color experiments. I recently decided to focus more on burgundy and purples and then the items magically were spotted at the thrift store . But honestly, that is pretty much how it works for me.

Colors I love I usually can’t find, like orchid. Or I find something like a sweater but can’t build out. I finally figured out that I’m drawn to green shoes; don’t ask me why. I decided to work on a monoclo challenge to see if I can put together colors in my closet and not just black and gray.

My climate is too warm for most of your accessory solutions.

I agree with everything you wrote in your first paragraph.

I used to this more intuitively, but lately I try to take a more deliberate approach. For me, the choice of items and their price depends on : how unusual the color is for me/how likely am I going to wear it for longer period of time, and if it is a flattering color next to my face. Most of the time the answer to the first is "don't know yet" and to the second is "no". If so, I start with cheaper items, and if it turns out that they are working, I may end up getting some more pricey ones.

An example is rust family, which looks great with my blues and navies, but it is not good next to my face, so I would never get a beret in such a color, or a solid top. Thus the approach was solid bottoms/accessories and tops/scarves in patterns that are navy based. Below is the capsule I have mostly built over the past 4 years (several pieces were older). Once I became certain of the color, I added some more regular priced options (e.g. the coat). I will be soon getting a dark chocolate bag, with an additional guitar strap that incorporates rust in it.

Ooh, rust and blue will be fun to combine, too!

I have a pretty longstanding sense of what colors I want in my wardrobe but have trouble actually building out functional complements. Maybe because things are not available or because I don't prioritize effectively, or a but of both. Actually I think the first thread I started on YLF was about complement planning and I must say I still haven't got it figured out!

One recent insight that I had was that if there's a color I want to play a bigger role in my wardrobe but am having trouble finding in clothing, I could look for accessories in that color and wear them with neutrals to feel like the color has a presence in my wardrobe. (Otoh if I have a more generous collection of clothing items in a color I don't need accessories in it bc I typically prefer to add contrast.)

When experimenting with adding a new colour capsule, I find 4 items are needed in order to fully audition the colour. Some items can be big and expensive commitments - like a nice leather bag, or a coat - but there are inexpensive ways to experiment as well. Caps, hats, scarves, belts, and t-shirts can be inexpensive - especially in unusual colours - which sometimes get discounted shortly after release due to being unusual. Another ‘trick’ is to find a patterned garment that appeals, and happens to have the ‘new’ colour that interests you, as well as colours that are part of your regular wardrobe.

I’m currently interested in developing a light blue capsule, but concerned that it is not one of my ‘best’ colours. So far, I have two low expense items - a beret and a flannel shirt. I’m also interested in rust/orange - but have one item (a t-shirt), and a second on the way (a tote/kit bag). Going into winter this year I need accessories like hats, scarves, and mitts - so I am keeping my eyes peeled for accessories more than garments to make up my capsule of 4 items. If one (or both) of the colour experiments sticks - I’ll commit to more expensive and permanent/long term items.

How do you approach colour in your closet? Do you ‘manage’ the introduction of new colours to your wardrobe? Or, is it more whim and instinct?
