Steph - thanks for that. Really helpful. They aren't knotted and they do snap back when you pull them apart a bit. So I'll try first just restringing them but a bit looser and see if that helps and if not I'll try knotting them. I have a feeling that there's a knack to that that might take some time for a novice to sort!

Rute - thanks! Sounds like you used varnish. Must have been tricky to do without getting varnish everywhere!

I'll let you know how I get on.

Are they string onto a piece of string (probably nylon cord) or is each bead knotted onto the necklace, as pearls would be? If they are just strung together, it could be that they are strung so tightly that when they separate from each other through normal movement, they immediately snap back, catching the back of your neck. If it were me, I would take them apart and knot them--I would think that would solve the problem.

If you wanted to take them apart and restring with seed beads, that might help too, but it would definitely change the look of the necklace. Or maybe just restringing them as-is, but not quite so tightly would help.

If the beads are already knotted, I have no idea what it would be, unless the holes of the beads are a good bit bigger than the string, and the beads move around and your hair gets caught in the hole.

Glad it's not just me! And glad I gave you a laugh rute!

Here are the beads - don't know if it gives you any proper idea of them!

http://flickr.com/gp/47357895@N08/oJnG37

And slightly closer up.

http://flickr.com/gp/47357895@N08/Xor8Qd

They're quite tightly strung - can't see how they can be strung any tighter. Would restringing them with seed beads (or whatever they're called - those really tiny ones) in between help? Or restringing them but with a proper catch at the back so that the bit round the back of the neck isn't just beads. They're small beads - about 4-5mm diameter.

I feel your pain, and it's not just cheap beads. I bought the necklace in the YLF store and had to return it for that very reason. It hurt me! All of those rows of closely-strung beads would catch those teeny hairs...ouch! It made me so sad, because it's such a great necklace!

eh eh you made me laught!
Some years ago, I bought a cheap necklace made of wood beads, it was lovely, but I noticed that at the end of the day, it had ruined my silk blouse, the beads were not even and ruined the fabric. I used (I don't know the term in English) polish to even the surface.

I get that too i had kinda just given up on beads. I did make a bracelet myself recently with an old necklace and made it quite tight so it doesn't move this has eliminated the 'epilator effect' x

Edit- sorry i didn't read your post properly i get the problem on my wrists x

I make jewelry in my spare time. Can you post a photo of the necklace? If I can see it, I might be able to see what the problem is.

I'm trying to break out of my comfort zone and buy some jewellery. I bought some cheap turquoise beads to try to recreate the necklace in the YLF store as I couldn't find anything nearer in the UK. Trying them on, though, neck hairs get caught in between the beads and get pulled and it hurts!

Help! Is there anything I can do, or do I just need to remind myself never to buy cheap beads again? Strangely, an even cheaper rope of pearls doesn't have the same problem. Anyone else experienced this?
