Angie, I would love to hear your options. Actually I would love to have a buying session with you, it is on my wish list :)
I confess that I fail on the tailor to fit action. I will buy a pair of pants that fit my hips with intention of having the waist taken in and then just wear them anyway without doing it which defeats the purpose.
I also notice that whenever I gain some weight I start buying items in ridiculous big sizes which doesn't help.
I will find a mirror and take photos of the bottoms that need reviewing.

Celia, it's GREAT hat you're getting to the bottom of why outfits and pants and are challenge. Good job passing on those items. Well done.

As for bottoms, I highly recommend having them tailored to fit. I can also help you find the best fit right away too, if you like.

As for trouble shooting of the outfit with pants: you can often identify the problem with an outfit that is “not quite right” by asking these four questions.

Is it the length of an item that will make the difference?

Is it the level of contrast between the items and your skin tone?

Is it the colour or pattern?

Do you need to add heels to the outfit?

In some instances you’ll solve the problem by actioning one fast tweak.

Sometimes I love a pair of pants sometimes I feel awful in it and the only thing that changed between the two outfits is the top.

this is a two part answer.

first for the bottoms...i totally get it. my lower half has never been the half that i wanted to showcase. pants always fit weird for a petite who is much smaller on top than her curvy bottom. skirts are just prime orphan material. i've segued into 1 pair of non-jean black wide leg pants hemmed for 2 inch heel which i will wear with flats and enjoy the floopiness and luxury of the extra fabric like pseudo palazzos. the rest of my bottoms are a wide array of jeans. i wear jeans to work, professional meetings, if i don't wear dresses.

second part...outfits in my head...about 1/2 the outfits i think up stay in my head. 1/4 look better in my head. 1/4 i try on, think "hmmm" then forget that i might have like it. i have a very strong default mode.

For me, it is often the particular combination of items that doesn’t work. Once I’ve figured out the problem I can fix it by making changes.

Joy , suntiger, Angie's ensembles also do that to me. They are always so appealing that I want to recreate them. I put together the items(or buy them) but when the appropriate weather comes I forget about them.
Sterling, you raise a good point. Regarding winter pants and to be blunt the heavier fabrics mixed with sitting all day long makes my bottom half feel too hot and uncomfortable, especially in leather chairs.
Generally speaking I think that my problem with bottoms is twofold. To start ,bottoms are the hardest fit for me and I tend to duplicate what I feel fits and is within my comfort zone. So of course everything looks the same.
Secondly, and to my surprise, I know what colors I like to wear on my top half. And they go with the colors I usually buy for pants(navy and black).
So, in my very streamlined thought process I am always wearing the same combinations.
I think that assessing how an outfit felt at the end of the day and if necessary just donate items seems like a very wise way to go forward.

What really helped me was investing in Style Book. I don't imagine ensembles, I actually build them from my Style Book closet and then wear them. At the end of the day, I have a very good idea of how I felt in that ensemble (fabulous, strong and healthy versus meh). I can then evaluate how or why it did not work for me (this evaluation really aided in the decision making as it relates to donating an item too).

I can easily see what items are not pulling their weight and can assess what the problem is. If similar silhouettes are an issue, I can immediately see their similarity and decide how best to change that (if I want to). If all of my bottoms are a dark color (black or blue), it is immediately obvious. Then the decision is mine to decide to add color r not. If the silhouettes are all the same, again, the decision is mine to make a change.

i have sooooo many imagined outfits! But....alot less than i used to...i'm trying to be better about actually trying my imaged outfits before i need to get dressed for the day....and then trying hard to understand why something isn't clicking...sometimes the outfit just needs a little tweak, maybe a different shoe, or a belt, maybe this top needs to be swapped for a slightly different one, maybe the outfit actually looks good, but my mood is off....maybe i have no idea and i need to post the outfit here for some help

I can so relate! I am very slow at editing, usually I keep working hard on orphans like that-with mixed up luck of 50-50% only. But you never know what comes next season. For ex. I always look better (for my body and age) in longer to the knee(at least)or midi dresses and skirts, but they were missing in my shops for at least 10 yrs! I gained weight and age-and my older dresses didn't fit but still had to dress my body-so gave up and bought all the so rare available longer of the short dresses/and skirts, then made an extra effort to style them for my life and body. And now suddenly all is midi now-so hurry to stock up again-and...so... what to do with all my shorter collection????:-(((

In truth, I cannot say I do this. Right now my wardrobe is really small and there is a lot of purposeful duplication. Consequently, my wardrobe is it currently stands does not lend itself to this type of mental activity.

But I understand exactly what you are asking.

Donating those pieces that you do not wear is certainly a step in the right direction for you. As you clear away the muck, you may have a clearer picture of your wardrobe. Getting your new wider cut pants hemmed may be revolutionary.

If bottoms is your problem, can we try to narrow down the question of why they are your Achilles heel? I'm hearing you don't like wool or heavier fabrication during the winter months, but I feel it has to be more than that. Is it pleating? Is it a feeling of heaviness?

Yep-definitely have done this-hence why I want my wardrobe to be mostly dresses :)
Ditto Joy too-since Angie's "summer" ensembles are for really mild unicorn weather days in my climate!

I do worse. I see an outfit idea in Angue’s Ensembles blog post, imagine what my version would be from my wardrobe, but never actually put it together and wear it. My thoughts are that the weather is not right and file it away for another day. Lags in alterations are common, most common with DH’s things.

It is from Le Chateau. It recently came to my attention that Le Chateau outlet on line can be a great and not expensive way to add items to your wardrobe.(only available in Canada, I'm afraid).
After an organized beginning the second week of dressing for work was all over the place. Not only there wasn't any kind of theme, I both wore a complete suit one day and wore the same navy pants twice. From the selection below you can't really tell because there is missing a magenta blazer I wore with the navy pants and white top, and a lavender cardigan I wore with the black top and black pants.
I got thinking what was really bothering me (besides the magenta making an entrance as if I am casting my own patronus ) and realized that it was both the extra time looking at my closet trying to find clothes and the fact that my bottoms feel all the same.
I have bought some pants with a wider leg cut but have failed to take them to be hemmed and, of course still have way too many things in my closet.
This got me thinking about the outfits that I make in my head (or in finds ) and at the end of the day I really don't wear. Most of the time that has to do with the bottoms.
Even in winter I really don't feel comfortable in most of the wool pants, Tweed skirts make me feel dowdy.
Acknowledging this make me donate at least 5 bottoms and a couple of tops that I had on hold 'just in case' I wanted to make the imagined outfit with the bottoms.
This week I will get my pants hemmed , promise.
I wonder how many people do this, imagine outfits and have them in the closet but never actually use them or when they do the reality falls short from what you imagined.
Thank you for reading .Hope you have a great week.
