The blogger's hair is gorgeous and I'm very impressed that she does her own colour. I second Adelpha's recommendation of checking out The Small Things Blog for hair tutorials. I also recommend The Beauty Department for hair ideas, tutorials and advice/reviews of hair products and tools.

A month ago I had my hair cut and coloured (I get partial highlights every three months). My hair is fine textured and very straight but there's quite a bit of it. I did have some face-framing layers that I'm am now growing out. My hair is also long-ish. In an attempt to hasten the growing out process, I had my hair cut shorter than usual and I didn't like it. So I went to these websites to get some tips on how to style it differently. Although I still often wear my hair straight, I'm also, more frequently than ever before, curling it. I'm trying to perfect the loose wave. What I like about the hair style is that it lasts. I wear my hair down more days in a row with it curled. When it's straight I generally wear it up the second day (I wash it every other day and use a dry shampoo). I've found that curling it takes no time at all and I feel like I get big pay off. I also like how my highlights look with the texture of curls/waves.

So the short answer is that I do like changing up the look of my hair with different styling options but this is a recent change!

I've actually been growing my hair out so that I can create more varied looks, like the blogger. The problem is, I'm not very good at it, and I have very little energy to spend on hair styling. My hair is naturally wavy too, and I find that if I am going to do a soft-curls look like the blogger, I have to blow dry my hair straight first and then go at it with a curling iron--I can't just let it air dry, because the wave ruins the soft-curls look. So that makes do's like that labor intensive. But once I get my hair grown out another inch or two, I can pull it back in various ways, which will mean a greater variety of looks with (I'm hoping) less effort.

Joy, I have heard that if you have straight hair and want it to hold a curl, you have to do it the old-fashioned way, with a wet setting in curlers and letting it air dry. Is that something you've tried? I think that E does her hair like this on occasion and gets good results.

Other than letting my hair sometimes get long between cuts and angling it more or less, I try to change it up by changing the part...left, right, middle, or straight back. I wish it could be curly as well as straight, but this hair will be super straight within an hour of any attempt at curl.

Like Janet when I had longer hair with layers in it, short of pulling it back in clip, I really couldn't control how it was going to turn out -- and even if I spent some time styling it, it could look completely different an hour or two later.

I've been so grateful with a one length bob in that I basically wash, put in a tiny bit of conditioner, part, comb and let it air dry and then it stays that way, even overnight.

I should try putting in curls or waves occasionally or pinning parts back for variety. With the blogger I noticed that sleek vs. RATE/wavy and let down vs. tucked or pinned back made for quite a variety of looks if combined various ways.

alaskagirl it sounds like just working with product and different drying techniques to see how they feel might be fun.

I change styles often, short, long, bob and colour from various shades of blonde into brown.

Some days I blow dry, some days I air dry. I rarely flat iron as I don't like the look on me.

When my hair is long I experiment with different pony tails, up-do's etc..

It would be a fun experiment to see how you like different styles!
My answer to your question: My hair changes itself up, no help needed from me. At least that's how it feels to me. I never know what it's going to do from one day to the next.
That said, I did get it cut today, by a different stylist, and she showed me a new styling technique! So we'll see what happens tomorrow.

Yeah I have several times in the past, and I did wear it less curly/more straight when I first came to YLF. But truthfully, I actually don't like how I look with straight hair! I feel like it over emphasizes my small head/IT shoulders... and it's just so normal looking The wavy look I'm going to try is still pretty big (see below).

Considering that my hair is extremely inconsistent -- it will look completely different from one day to the next, even if I wash and dry and style it exactly the same way -- I don't know that I need to bother. ;-)

I'm really bad about switching up the style of my hair from day to day. I pull it back in a low, loose ponytail from time to time (especially when it's hot and humid, to try to contain the wild frizz), but that's about it. It's too much work for me, really, to bother with much more, when my hair has a mind of its own and will quickly resume its natural wavy state, no matter what I do with it. I'll attempt to style it sleek and straight with a flat iron from time to time, but again, if there is any humidity in the air, it's doomed to return to waviness midway through the day. Sometimes I'll encourage the curl a bit, but I have to be in the right mood for that, and it takes more work than one would think. Plus that's not my favorite look for my preferred style.

I don't think I have the right kind of face and head for many hairstyles. I have small head and largish features, and I think I just look weird when I pull my hair back tight.

Lately I've wondered if I should try wearing my bangs a little longer and waved off of my face, like I did back in the 90s. Maybe not. I feel like it looked good on me back then, but I have a lot more lines on my forehead now.

Aida, have you ever straightened your hair? I don't know why you would since it's so lovely with curls, but might be an interesting look. My sister did it once and we were all freaked out because she looked so different!

Hmm I only do two things: Down (curly) and Up.
(Ok and also occasionally down+hat, but I don't think that counts.)

I usually have my hair dresser change the cut just a little each time I go, but it seems that no one other than me notices it. Sometimes I feel like I should try more things with my hair, but ultimately I'm pretty happy with just these two options -- they make enough statement
on their own and both feel like good authentic options for me.

I'm going to play around with a straighter beachy-wave thing though. I came across it by accident in AZ a couple weeks ago and I think it could be a fun casual change-up option. We'll see.

I'm sure I single-handedly keep the salon I frequent in business, and am sending my stylists' daughters through sports and dance classes. I change my hair up all the time - not at home though as styling and playing around with a flat iron produces humorous results. I am constantly on pinterest, fashion blogs etc copying hair pictures, and frequently change up the style (what is allowed with already short hair though) and colour it/highlight it pretty much every month or so.

I've always had short hair - kind of my signature - but just before I turned 50 I decided I needed to have an angled funky bob. My stylist and I invested in extensions, and away I went. It was SO cool and fun . I became a master at taking them out and putting them back in myself - you know when you know just enough to become dangerous? It took a good year to grow out to a one-length bob, but i liked it. Then I cut it all back off a year or so ago :0
Seeing our new blogger-friend's hair today makes me want to get out the extensions and play again .

Peri, I know the feeling! I guess I'm looking for ways to change it up without buying more clothes - thus the ear jackets and hair switch-ups seem like possibilities. But I can see a lot of incompetent flailing with the flatiron in my future.

I'm in the process of changing my cut...growing out and shifting lengths...and having trouble! So the idea of doing it differently on different days is daunting right now since I haven't even mastered one look. (Going for the long bob with front a bit longer than the back, which is opposite of what I've had for ages).

But...I did read somewhere that varying your hairstyle from day to day would help you seem more "youthful", since teens and 20s women tend to do this. Hmmm...assumption that youthful is always the goal. But it does seem like it would be fun...if I can learn to work with this new cut at all.

She has great hair. I don't do much with mine, roots coloured and a trim every 8 weeks I'm getting highlights at my next appointment to change it up for summer but that's as far as it goes. After washing I slick through some styling cream and rough dry with the hair dryer, it flicks under or out depending on its mood I'm happy with either. I rarely put it up as it gives me a headache. x

I need to learn how to do this too, Una - I change my cut often but always style it in the same exact way - side part and flat ironed around the face. I don't even know how to slick it back with gel or spike it up. When it was a little longer, my stylist was able to use a diffuser and get it curly, but I could never do it myself. I'm hopeless.

I'm in a long term hair rut - the most I typically change mine is either in a ponytail or not. Well, sometimes I let it go a little more curly but that's usually just when the humidity makes me. I guess the color is the biggest change lately since it's turning much more light gray than golden blonde.

Una - I think it would be really fun for you to try the loose curls

viva - I also think a special highlight at the bottom effect could be really fun for you

Thanks for that link, Viva! I have a really similar cut (disconnected angled bob) and get a lot of nice comments on it, but it never occurred to me to style it differently. I am horrible with styling tools but I may try the loose curls!

I don't, but this really reminds me how much I need to get to the salon.

I usually like my back and away from my face, whether at work or just lounging. I guess all of those years of my mom telling me to get the hair out of my face stuck.

I guess I'm a low maintenance kinda chick when it comes to my hair. I'm sure with my long locks I could do countless styles but it is either down/straight or in a bun/claw clip. I rarely play with my hair because it feels like a lot of energy but I always like it when I do achieve a different look. But now, I'm really questioning if I want to cut it into a definitive style (mid-length layers). But my problem in the past is that I always tuck it behind my ears so any style seems wrecked when I do this. Oh the great debate of hair...

I think many of us were struck by her hair! I spent some time at her blog and she has some really great tutorials on there for her dos. Very detailed and inspiring. I definitely need to do more!

BTW, she does her own color. Yes, her own ombre. At home. Yikes!

Yep - me too. I wore my hair back today, and like the slight change-up for me
