Hmmm...it does sound like something I could do myself. Either with the polish or they shoe dye.

I was wondering the same thing a while back. I googled and found leather dye specifically for shoes. Here's just one type of dye I found, I bet there are lots more (try google):

http://www.shoecaresupplies.co.....re.169.htm

I have never tried though, so I have no experience to share.

I'm so nervous about doing this myself! Maybe I should just take them to the cobbler and have him/her take care of it.

I have glopped on so many layers of shoe polish that the underlying color does not show. The polish does not smudge or run even when the shoes get wet.

I guess I should have mentioned that the shoes are leather! How permenant is shoe polish?

It depends on what the shoe is made of, really. If it is fabric, then I believe you can change the color, and you could do it at home. If it is untreated leather, then you could probably darken the color a few shades at home using shoe polish (to elpgal's point). If you want to permanently change the color, you would probably have to take them to a cobbler so they could dye the leather. They will probably only be able to change it a few shades, but ask anyway. I'd take another pair of shoes with you to show them what you want done. As far as I know, patent leather cannot be dyed or treated to change the color.

I don't know about going lighter, but I have made some caramel colored leather shoes almost a dark brown with shoe polish. The leather was aged and worn down, not stiff and shiny.

Before I run off to the cobbler to ask this question...I thought I'd throw it out here for some input. I have a couple pairs of shoes and one pair of boots that I woud definitely wear more if they were a different color. For example, I have a pair of T-strap heels that is mid-way between brown and tan....I wish it was one or the other! In any case, all my issues with these shoes is color...other than that, they are great and useful shoes.

Can shoes be dyed or colored? Is this something that can be done at home?
