Jonesy, thanks for the Cos idea! It looks like they’re dominated by pleats and black at the moment, but it’s always good to check them out.

Carla, YES! Drapey is key. Too stiff and they can be annoying and unflattering. Hence my love for the old Theory trousers I have. It’s hard to find all the correct elements in one pair.

Carol, Gap is another good source, but of late their fits seem off for me. I do see a mid rise wide chino there — the colors don’t slay me, but might be worth a try-on. Tall sizes are mostly sold out too.

I had some cotton wide-leg black ones from Gap that sufficed on most winter days--I just added leggings or tights underneath on cold days. I bet Gap would be a great place to look for casual wide-leg pants.

I attempted the long wide leg route in 2019, and did a series of exhausting and disappointing try-ons and returns until a miracle occurred! (See Finds. They don’t look like much on the hanger, but work on my body.)

I’ve tried growing the collection, but haven’t found any I like as much or better. ‘Hard’ fabric - like denim and chino - are particularly challenging, IMO, and fluid fabrics are easier - but the style of full length and wide leg is tricky to get right. Good hunting, Janet!

Have you looked at Cos? I just bought two pairs of long, lightweight wool pants from them (one navy pinstripe, one black) and they have quite a few longer, slouchy styles on their site. The Me + Em ones look really sharp too! Off to google Saint & Sofia...

Thanks, JK! I never thought of Uniqlo, but I haven’t had luck with their pants being long enough for me in the past. I took a look at their site just to check though, but it seems the offerings are mostly pleated, cropped or tapered.

I’ve had really good experiences with Saint & Sophia. Shipping is definitely slow I will say I think they are tts m, but definitely not generous. So if you’re on the cusp on their size chart, I’d go up.
I placed my 1st order from me + ‘‘em last week, shipping was expensive but 3 days later the package arrived. If I hadn’t gotten such a good deal on my order (end of season sale 50% off)

Stag, I have these “skater jeans” from Anthro and love them! I had to get them in the tall to get the length to work. Of course my styling is completely different from the model. :-D

ETA: I just looked for them on their website and can’t find them now, so I guess they’re sold out. They do have some other appealing cuts though, some of which are on sale, and some with a “sustainable” label, FWIW.

Me + Em is out of my price range unless it’s on sale and I’m not even sure if it ships to CA - anyways , I can see this look on you Janet . TNMA posts these pants quit often - now I’m off on a new obsession

Thanks, all! I’m skeptical about that Boden thigh fit, even with your assurances! Boden has always been a bit narrow for me in general, and the thighs look narrow *for my legs*. I took another look anyway, and now it occurs to me that none of the current colors are what I’m after — I already have rust and black trousers.

Tanya, thanks for the fit info on Me + Em. I love a side stripe! The plaid may be too much though, as much as I love that cobalt blue.

If anyone chimes in with experience on Saint & Sofia, that would be helpful too! Again, I like the side stripe, and the navy/blue looks nice. I like the teal color but wish the side stripe on that version was black or grey.

I find them TTS or slightly big - I am currently 4/6 depending on the brand an all of the Me + Ems I have are 4 and not too tight at all. I have the long torso/short legs body type, prefer higher rise, and the several pants attached below were all winners.

I like the vibe of these (first two pics) from Me + Em but I have no clue whether their fits are right for me, and how sizing runs. Shipping from the UK means long lead times too. Not that I’m in a hurry, but still…

Also looking very seriously at these (second two photos) from Saint & Sophia. The price is not bad, and they’re more casual, which is good…

Thanks, everybody!

Kkards, thanks for that! BR has the Lido pant in dark green, which I love! But my size is not available. Pout.

Angie, I looked at VB and didn’t see anything on their site. The VB pants from Nordstrom are appealing, but are not available in my size.

Those Kut trousers would be so good! They have a nice casual integrity and machine washable! But the rise is high and they’re gone in my size anyway. The Boden pants look more bootcut-ish to me. They’re quite narrow looking through the thigh and knee, which is not what I’m after. I want that fit that does NOT hug my knees at all. Hard to find with my thick legs. Ponte is comfortable but all the stretch means a hugging fit, which is not what I want for a new pair of wide legs. I already have a ponte pair that have that bootcut fit covered.

I’m such a demanding customer, LOL!

I like ponte knit trousers for this, they are more casual than wool. I also like some washable wool blend trousers I found at Madewell, they have a casual vibe.

No suggestions to offer, but I'm also on the hunt for grey or burgundy trousers that can be made office-y when needed but will work in the rest of my life too.

I just passed along a pair of wide-legs from Universal Standard, they might be worth a look.

MM LaFleur is another genius at making things that look like dress pants but feel like sweatpants.

I’m appreciating that pants silhouettes are becoming looser and longer, with more wide leg and full length options. I added another pair of wide leg jeans to my wardrobe after realizing that this is one of my preferred silhouettes now (the other is boyfriend jeans). I realized with some closet work over the weekend that I still have a number of “straight legs” that fit me more like skinnies (touching or even hugging the calves a bit), and I’m not rushing to cull them (the wearing season hasn’t even started yet), but they’re on notice. They may come in handy getting tucked into tall boots this winter.

However, my issue with finding some wide-leg NON-jean options is that rises are still quite high and many styles are pleated, neither of which works for me. Or I’ll find a good style and it’s $600.

Has anyone seen such a magical animal as a somewhat casual wide-leg trouser, full-length, mid rise, no pleats, not too fancy or office-y looking? Perhaps in grey or burgundy, not just black? My usual haunts don’t turn up much.

I do have these Theory trousers from a few years ago that I love. The rise is a little long, but somehow they are cut so that the fit works for me without the weird extra fabric in the crotch that I so often get with high rises. They’re also lightweight and drapey, without being clingy or too thin, which helps. These are a bit on the dressy side, but I might try wearing them with sneakers to dress them down.
