Mary Beth--thanks! Well, at least if you use your stuff, that's what counts.
Bamboo earrings...as far as I can tell, are a bit of an urban classic fashion item. I've wanted some for a long time, but didn't pull the trigger. There are really nice versions of these, which cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars. These are cheapies. There are also versions made of actual bamboo.

Not a lot of white women wear them, so I wasn't sure if I would get them. In the end, I love hip-hop style so much (Kangol hats, bright sneakers, etc.) that I realized they really were "me."

Here's a mention in a 1990 LL Cool J song, so you can see how far back they go:

You got me shook up, shook down, shook out
On your loving, on your loving

I want a girl with extensions in her hair
Bamboo earrings, at least two pair
A Fendi bag and a bad attitude
That's all I need to get me in a good mood
She can walk with a switch and talk with street slang
I love it when a woman ain't scared to do her thing

I really like this! Alas, I have magpie tendencies, and so everything is loosely organized by type and theme, inside closed storage.

And my inner magpie is chattering and won't shut up: what are those bamboo-shaped hoops?

Firecracker--maybe a big, beautiful tapestry on the wall that you hook all the earrings to? All I know is, I feel better now that I organized them.
April--that is a great principle, and counterintuitive for most people. We want to put "all the tools together," and "all the cloth items together." Well, if you use the cloth napkins every day, why not just plop them in a pile in your cabinet next to your drinking glasses, instead of trek to the formal hutch in the next room to grab them where they're stored with the tablecloths?

Another champion of the basket idea. Also, by hanging the earrings that get used least, you make use of a time-honored organizing principle: the things you reach for often should be the easiest ones to reach.

Nicely done. I like your clever use of the basket. My organizational system for jewelry has been bugging me a little bit for a while, but I am not sure how to change it. Mostly it's the earrings that are out of control. I have too many!

Jaime--I am like that, too. My most worn earrings were scattered towards the front of my dresser, but like I said, that had limited effectiveness, when I could not find the other one. Thank you!
Suz--thank you!
unfrumped--good point about "curating" and moving towards a certain style. I think I did that with my earrings. By carefully culling them over the years, I was able to find out I like bold, geometric, sometimes colorful ones.

Angie--thanks! that's the idea.
ChristelJ--I'm glad. It was a happy accident I found that basket in storage the same day.
lyn67--yes, satisfying. As for my "no organization" philosophy--maybe I'll write a book! :)
Irina--I think in certain circumstances, I will still use "no organization." It is great for professor/artist types who throw everything everywhere.
Aquamarine--jewelry is one of those things hard to get rid of, because of sentimentality or practicality, or like me...because "maybe I'll find that other earring." It must feel better to have a neat collection.
Runcarla--I have seen egg cartons, small dishes, etc. for compartmentalization. I have never seen ice cube trays. Good idea. Thanks for liking my basket!

Joy--sounds good.
slim cat--thanks. I'm lucky I found that basket in storage at the last minute. It sounds like you have a lot of jewelry, and a mischievous cat. I am lucky to have had mostly cats not interested in that sort of thing. Moxie, however, is very interested in scratching my mattress box...
Star--I can see that...yes, statement earrings need to be a "statement," and don't work with every outfit. I like the idea of the cutlery piece--it probably is one of the more practical. Additionally, it stays in a drawer, so doesn't get dusty.
Roberta--thanks, I happened to unearth that basket from an old storage box the very day I set up this jewelry. It is nice to have everything on display, isn't it?
Sal--thanks! it was.

I am using some metal “ pegboard” type wall thingies, actually pushpin- holes , from Container Store , on a bit of wall in closet. Uses pushpins and those small cylindrical magnets. For necklaces which are generally chain-like or at least the links at the back fastener. Makes me much more likely to add a necklace to a casual top. Also, I’m paying attention to which ones I’m wearing and where put one in, then look at outfit and take it off. I used 2 slim rectangle ones , which can hold quite a few such items, maybe up to 20, but still limited, plus don’t want to be a crowded jumble, so curating over time is good. Plus, wearing/ not wearing stuff helps show me what types of jewelry I actually like or may be moving toward.

I also have to see everything or I won't wear it. I thrifted two jewelry boxes for earrings and brooches, have my necklaces on one of those Shaker peg rails much like you have done, and for bracelets and watches, I got one of those black velvet display stands that you see at art and jewelry fairs. That is my favorite because it is mostly vertical and doesn't take up much space on my dresser. I love your wicker basket though!

I love all your earrings, the gifts and own choices, and your cuffs. I feel naked without earrings and I always wore large bold statement earrings but once I started wearing specs daily instead of contact lenses it seemed a bit too much for me, and I wear more simple earrings now. I put all my jewelry into a cutlery drawer sorter in a drawer which kind of works. Not as well as I would like it to but not too serious seeing that my choices are more limited nowadays. I had a beautiful wooden Balinese jewelry box with many small drawers for my earrings in South Africa but I gifted it to a friend when I moved continents. I like the idea of them hanging on display, easy to see.

Staring at my piles of scattered jewelry on my dresser, none of it hung or laid out, I got a sudden urge to organize it yesterday.

Don't get me wrong--it was a "no organization" organizational system that had worked for years. Though many people toss things anywhere, I like to think I'm the first person who consciously acknowledged this as a valid system.

("No organization" works for a set of items where there aren't too many. Like if you have a pantry with a few cans, a bottle of olive oil, and a few grains and baking ingredients, there is no need to organize it. Because no matter where you put anything, you can always open the cupboard and immediately see where the flour is.)

And since I don't have too much jewelry, "no organization" worked here, too...until it didn't. I'd reach for the same things, because maybe a pair of earrings I liked had one earring over here, and another buried under a necklace...and I wouldn't get to it for a month.

So yesterday I realized it would be nice to "see" everything I had all at once, like the fancy walk-in closets with all the shoes lined up on social media.

This did not take long--maybe a half hour. A signature item for me is earrings. The ones hooked to the basket are gifts. My own style is actually more bold and graphic--the 4 colorful ones laid out in boxes are my own purchases.
