Congratulations! It sounds like your new job came to you and is the perfect change.

I totally hear you on the "consistent and stable" income! I am actually moving soon to a new city and will be getting a job to provide the above. I'm hoping for health insurance, too! Being an entrepreneur and balancing everything is tough! I admire women who can do it and have families, too.

I agree with some of the other posts, once you get your basics new wardrobe covered, you may feel really free--perhaps a Feng Shui thing. You of course can still have fun with your off work clothes.

BTW, I work part time at White House Black Market. We can wear black or white from any store. If we wear color, it has to be currently in the store, so those items are super short lived. I kind of like wearing all black...more than I thought I would. I imagine you will, too...once the "shock" of a dress code wears off, lol!

Late to this thread ... a big congratulations!!! On having older clients ... you will have constant moments of gratitude for the state of your own health. Plus acceptance that you will eventually get there too. You might also mysteriously start to perceive yourself as young.

On wearing black ... my go-to place is Uniqlo for work pieces. Their fabrics are great and withstand lots of washing.

@lisa p, In terms of standing up all day, you might want to try lightweight compression leg sleeves made for runners, under your trousers. I like Zensah brand. I find them much more comfortable than the ones sold as medical devices. I tend to wear those sleeves if I suddenly need to be standing much more than I had previously been doing, say 8-10 hours instead of 4-5. There are also similar products for ankle support, but you would need closed shoes for that: definitely wouldn’t want to wear them with Birkenstock sandals .

Lol no complaining about wearing all black young lady :) I wonder if once you have your 'uniform' sorted if you will actually feel a freedom in not having to think too much about day to day dressing? I have to admit tho, that I would absolutely have to wear a lovely bright lip.

You will find your groove quickly with the clothing. But yes flat comfy footwear will be needed. Your steps will rocket per day though if you track those things - so much healthier than a sedentary job (which is what I have)

What unfrumped said. Go slow.

I'm also guessing that anyone who has worked on her own for 22 years is going to experience some internal rebellion at being told what to do and where to be and what to wear. I certainly would. Just give it time and don't let your own (understandable) reactions overcome your enjoyment of this change.

Changing jobs takes up a lot of bandwidth initially so give yourself time and space. Don’t schedule a lot of other things. I changed careers after over 30 years and while it was the right thing, it also was (is) CHALLENGING.

Thanks again everyone! Is it too soon to complain about wearing all black ,every day, all day? I'm beginning to feel like a robot. No scented anything, no colour , flat shoes, ugh. I already need to add in a few pieces to get the look I want : black lightweight bomber, Birks, and a couple of plain black easy tops . Transitioning between working out of my home office for 22 years into standing up most of the day behind a reception desk is killing me - it's not for the faint of heart, that's for sure!

Congrats... At places I have worked with the all black dress code, there seem to be two levels of strictness. One where even a hair ribbon has to be black, and the other where for example a subtle deep rose colored hair ribbon is perfectly normal and even expected that you personalize your outfit a little bit.

lisa p., congratulations! This sounds wonderful. And I know it takes a lot of courage to make a big change like this. I wish you all the best in the new job (and the new sartorial requirements!). As someone who wore a boring uniform to school (navy sweatpants or dark denim, white tee with school logo, and tops could only be dark blue or white), I understand the frustration but also appreciate how the challenge of expressing oneself with such constraints can actually be fun. (And sometimes liberating and quite practical... some days I wish I had a uniform....!)

LISA- haha- you totally crack me up. Only you can make the Jets' jersey/gear part of work uniform and get away with it.
I am so happy for you. I remember how jazzed I was when I did a career change and it worked out better than my wildest dreams. I indeed wish this is the same for you.
Tell those young whipper snappers that age is just a stupid number

Lisa, what a wonderful opportunity! I too think the dress code will be very freeing. Great time to make a career shift (by the time I hit 50 I was totally burned out as a public librarian). Terrific that you could find something meaningful.

Nothing like a new job to give you a new lease on life and new habits that you may have been trying to get to for years sounds like this is perfect for you Lisa and I think the health/fitness focus of your job will influence your life as well (just as your old job had you focus more on style/decor.) I think it will be very freeing for you and likely unlock a part of yourself you've been wanting to express (or maybe I'm just projecting )

One tip (maybe an unpopular one?) Perhaps try to step away from the forum for a while - while I suspect you'll find the all black very freeing and not miss getting dressed up every day at all, there's nothing like seeing others WIWs to make you want what you don't truly want. Again, maybe I'm projecting, but I think you and I may share the awful compare-and-despair habit, and strong away may allow you to step into your choices and step into your own. In case it's not clear - I'm So, so happy for you

Lisa, this is so amazing, you're my hero! There is nothing more inspiring than seeing someone fearless pursue what makes them happy. So happy for you. As for the dress code, you can always do the column of black concept and have fun with statement pieces to throw on for commute and after work activities!
