One last boring update so I can close the week and call this a definite success. I feel like I'm in good shape for the next four months of spring. We always say summer starts July 5! This exercise has shown legitimate holes, like layering tops and a few pairs of medium weight trousers or jeans, and I'm working on filling those holes while being PPP, since I know I can muddle through with this holes.

Thursday & Friday were WFH days. Which was good because my first choice for Thursday was not warm enough and I ended up adding a hoodie (not shown, one of my numerous grey tech hoodies) and swapping flats for blue high top sneakers!

Thursday is the outfit with yellow sweater. Not shown: three layered gold and black necklaces.

Friday is the blue dress and leggings and black sneakers. Not shown is a chunky lucite necklace. Someday I may find my grey sneakers.

Thanks again for your encouragement and thoughtfulness. Hope y'all are having a great early spring (or autumn).

Two more outfits, because this is helping me track! Feel free to ignore.

Yesterday, one of my all time favorite pieces of clothing, this Universal Standard mustard merino sweater, worn with olive knit slacks and mustard flats.

Today, pink sweater, fun scarf, jeans and oxfords. I bought the oxfords at last year’s NAS so they haven’t seen much action. I was in the office today so they got to leave the house.

So far it’s working!

Great approach! I like your outfit with the pink a lot.

Spring definitely is challenging for many reasons. We often have rain and or wind too, as it's warming up. Plus I have dark Autumn coloring, so the traditional palette doesn't work at all on me. And my skinny heels don't work with transitional shoes. Luckily by May it sorts out and it's properly summer!

I've tried it all: dark florals, brights, lights, navy instead of black, black with a small bit of white, and just wearing my normal dark colors anyway. If I had to work in the office now I'd work on the challenge more!

I think that your idea is brilliant and works well when one does not live in a place when spring tends to last long.
I live in the same area where Janet does, and everything she wrote applies to me as well. However, I work and heavily AC-ed office, so can wear spring clothes for much longer.

In general I tend to take capsule approach for seasons/situations where more clothes are needed, and outfit approach for the shorter seasons/rarer occasions. The outfit approach is very similar to what you describe here: I pick a couple of "key" pieces appropriate for the occasion/season, and then try to build three perfect distinct outfits for each of them - sort of like mini capsule for every key piece.

The experiment continues. Today I wanted to wear my oversized navy blazer, because I’d just seen an outfit with an oversized blazer and skirt. I also wanted to sneak in a walk at lunch, so practical shoes were also necessary.

This did the trick. I added turquoise earrings and necklace to brighten it further. The skirt is midi length with a large gathered pocket on one side. The sneakers are navy, if they’re showing darker on your device. I was worried about being cold, so had a scarf ready, but was fine without it.

So far, so good. Thanks for giving me a place to process!

That's such a simple but intriguing strategy.

Spring is weird here -- it's not linear. We will have days in early March when it feels like spring is well and truly arrived, and then get slammed with a snow/ice storm on the spring solstice. Then it seems to be a matter of only a couple of weeks before it gets truly warm and humid. So I have learned to not invest a lot in spring dressing. And traditional "spring colors" are not my best to wear, so I simply end up gravitating to my lighter weight tops and brighter versions of my usual colors. My footwear shifts from boots to sneakers, weather permitting.

I think that is a great solution. I struggle with spring too. Here in Michigan it is a very short season so not much use having a dedicated wardrobe for it. But I definitely feel like wearing different colors as warmer weather approaches.

I live in a 4-season climate and Spring feels rather chilly to me (10-20 deg C and I run cold). It is also very unpredictable. You have expressed very well what is my biggest challenge: stay warm and find clothing in happy "Spring" colours. You have a beautiful collection of Spring clothes and your strategy is smart !
To answer your questions:
Yes, Spring is the trickiest season for me.
How do you handle? Heh, I struggle every year.
Should I post outfits? Yes, please!

I like your approach too. I am longing for spring and yet realistically I an sitting inside looking out at what is 9-10 inches of new snow and the cold that comes with it. It will be below freezing at least at night through May and April is usually the snowiest month. Lots of cold and boot weather ahead before June (spring) .

I like your approach and think it sounds like much more fun and springy than just trying to be functional about the tricky weather. Spring here is basically light summer - it stops raining and most days get pretty warm but the mornings and evenings can be slightly cool. I try to give my light jackets their last hurrah until November.

Today's outfit - my first with this technique. I knew I wanted to wear my new cozy pink hoodie because I'd be sitting outside for a socially distant visit with a friend. This is the outfit I pulled together for a casual and beautiful spring day, which was sunny and in the mid 50s (F).

I'm on the hunt for light grey layering pieces - I like those better with pale blues and pinks than the black and white, and my white tees are too fitted and short for these jeans, which fit like boyfriend jeans on me.

So far so good - putting outfits together helps me find real wardrobe gaps, not just buy more shiny things :).

So interesting to see how you all handle it. Thanks for the good conversation and ideas.

Cat2: I love how your wardrobe works for all seasons, seamlessly!

always trying: We can compare notes! My eternal search for white jeans just struck out again. The pair that arrived today was the right weight and color but the fit was off. I had one pair that almost worked a few years ago, but gave up on them because they bagged out too much by the end of the day. I’d love to have that option in my wardrobe. Every year I try a bunch, but I’m being very picky.

Minaminu: I love your finds! That floral blouse and navy shirtdress, especially.

Unfrumped: Exactly. I made need long pants, booties, warm layers, but if I can have something that feels like spring I’m a lot happier. I’m a very intuitive and emotional dresser and season, color, and situation are all important to me.

Runcarla - I wear my coats so little right now that they don’t play a big part in my wardrobe. I love your spring selection!

LaPed - you have a great strategy. I want very different colors in fall and spring and so… Though now that I’m pulling more mustard in, for me that is both a fall and spring color. Those cropped trousers look perfect!

Joy: “One feels and wants spring so much sooner than it actually arrives. “ YES exactly. My heart wants pastels and crisp navy and white and my bones and toes want to be warm and dry. Love your strategy. I’ve adopted some of this with my mid-winter colors like warm pink and cream sweaters. Thanks for the tips!

Rachylou - Northern California doesn’t have much spring, does it? Your baby chick outfit sounds adorable, though. I love a good navy in the spring. I wear a little navy now, but before I wore much at all I craved it every spring, like clockwork.

Sloper - I lived in San Diego growing up and yes, spring was about a week in February when things started blooming and the hills were green and then boom, summer.

Angie - Yes, pacific NW spring sisters! I think the toppers are telling me I need better layering pieces. I’ve ordered some new tees, some long sleeve, and I suspect I’ll rely a lot on scarves. I don’t run super cold, so if I can keep my shoulders cozy that often does the trick.

YES!!!

"We have a long, wet and cool spring"

= Welcome to my world!

"The challenge of spring for me is staying warm and handling wet weather"

= double check! Story of my on foot life....

Well done, Nayda! This is a strategy I really relate to and use too. The beginning of Spring is all about wearing items that keep you warm in a more refreshed way. I've hauled out some cosy neon :)

Your items look great. Are the toppers warm enough? I need to wear thicker items.

While I truly am more of a fall/winter person, I do enjoy spring - that feeling of brightening and freshness.

Your floral blouse and yellow dress really sing to me!

Here in Southern California, we usually transition pretty quickly from middling cold weather to HOT, so I try to appreciate the balmier days in between before the smog settles in.

My favorite colors for spring (and summer) and white, light grey, olive, sage, navy, khaki, lime green, orange. I'm all casual/at-home clothing now - tees, khakis, sweats. I like linen but it's never liked me - I look too crumpled and unkempt, unless it is a heavy weight and weave.

Usually I will buy some Gap vintage tees to replace worn-out ones. Maybe one or two in a bright color.

I look forward to your outfits!

I’ve stopped buying for spring. My spring buys were usually bad, not warm enough and often out of character... one memorable buy was a yellow houndstooth skirt, yellow cardigan and yellow flats with little bows. It was cool for about one wear and then I was simply a baby chicken in want of an incubator. Spring here is too sporadic and short-lived a thing, with a false start in January often. It will be sunny but not warm except in the very middle of the day, and temps drop back into the 30s at night. I bought a navy suede coat many years ago now that works for a late-morning spring dog walk and gets me out of the nanook look. By the time I’ve worn it twice, spring is over, lol!

Spring is indeed a tricky time to plan for. I moved from a 4 season climate with 4 (really two) seasons to one with long transitional times. One feels and wants spring so much sooner than it actually arrives. So I added more transitional coats, clothing that can be layered, and warm clothes in spring colors and items with sleeves to my wardrobe. I also added more booties and closed shoes like loafers and oxfords that can be worn with or without socks.
Skirts are easier than dresses. Think of what occasions you will need to dress for in the spring. I finally realized that Easter is usually cold and a summer dress will not get worn. A suit makes more sense or a pastel coat.
Scarves are a great idea.
I wish you luck with this complicated part of you fashion journey. you look like you are getting it in hand.

Your strategy sounds perfect for changeable, unpredictable weather. and the pieces you show all say spring to me.

I live in a climate with a long mud season. Snow lingers through April or even May and the ground gets spongier and spongier as it melts. Even once the snow is gone, there's still road salt and sand everywhere. Footwear is always the limiting factor. It can be warm and sunny enough for a cute skirt or dress, but when it's paired with the same old boots instead of dainty flats, the vibe isn't quite as spring-y. Once things start to dry out, we generally veer right into hot/humid sandal weather.

I use a lot of the same transitional pieces in the spring and the fall. A lot of my favorite colour pairings (pale grey or black/white with rust, navy with olive, pale blue with ochre) seem to work equally well in either season. I tend to reach for plaids and darker knits in the fall, stripes and lighter colored knitwear in the spring. I also love swapping out wool scarves for silk and linen, and bringing my shortest cropped pants back into rotation.

Isn’t ‘Finds’ a brilliant tool for analysis? I just put my entire (non sports) wardrobe into Finds over the Christmas holidays. The difference between winter and spring for me is the coat I wear when going out-of-doors. Wool and heavy puffers for winter, trench/raincoats and light weight puffers for spring.

This is a great solution. I’ve always noticed the same thing, spring being just a sunny extension of winter. Hard for me to justify a big spring wardrobe, as often I’ll wear that long sought “transition” item only once, and then it’s suddenly too hot for it.

Over many years I’ve had a series of light pink sweaters, warm enough for but not looking like winter wear in my mind. These pink sweaters have seen lots of use in March and April, on cold spring days.

I think your selections are really great and do post photos.

I think that is a great idea.
It’s hard to maintain entire separate capsules of colors or seasonal “ feelings” that also covers crazy temp & weather swings.
I like the idea—if I understand it-of identifying something that meets the craving, and figuring out the rest. Maybe for me it means compromising on whether the whole outfit is “ spring ”, or whether it’s a scarf, a rainjacket, or a sweater, mixed with “ winter” items.

Spring here is a mix, it is normally warm and pleasant, the sun can shine quite frequently but the weather is still unpredictable, so there are often some rainy days!!!

I have a mix of silk and cotton blouses, a navy dress and some cream outwears

I like your idea. March is usually more difficult for me. Usually it is a time for several annual events, and a small road trip. This year not happening, and , of course, didn't last year. I am going to borrow your idea of picking out a scream spring, and working around it. Just looking around I find some things will work like starting with light or white jeans. Make 3 or 4 outfits with just changing shoes and jackets to sute the weather.

I don’t do Spring shopping. I have cream and blush as my light neutrals, and so usually already have cream or blush sweaters, jackets, long sleeve tops and purses that can be mixed with warm grey or blue pieces and feel Spring-y. This year I alternate have a new cream boiled wool jacket and a new cream cabled sweater. I wear them with lightweight scarves in cheery tones and switch up my makeup to something fresh feeling.

Spring is always the trickiest season for me. We have a long, wet and cool spring. I always fall down a rabbit hole trying to plan a spring wardrobe. In fact, I think that's how I first found YLF!

I had an aha moment this morning. I'd been playing with finds and looking at catalogs thinking about a spring capsule. But then I a different idea. The challenge of spring for me is staying warm and handling wet weather, while meeting my need for color and not feeling out place on the glorious sun breaks we get - sometimes on the same day as rain storms.

So, instead of creating a capsule, I went through my finds and pulled out anything that caught my eye that screamed spring and that I think I could put an outfit around. That outfit can pull from anything in my wardrobe. I keep all my clothes out and I'm a large wardrobe person, so there's lot to choose from and I love the creative energy of pulling together an outfit once I have a direction.

What I'm going to try on days when I'm stuck is picking one item from this collection. Then I'll add warm layers, light layers, darker colors, practical shoes--whatever the day takes.

Is spring tricky for you? How do you handle it? Should I post outfits to this thread to see if this is working?

P.S. This collection is bigger than shown - if you click through you you can see it includes shoes and scarves as well.
