You did it! I can imagine how hard it must be to recognize that 90% might very well need to be parted with. That is a bit overwhelming. I am learning a lot as I spend time on this board and one thing I am learning is this: although I love clothes and variety, I don’t need as much as I have. I can let a lot go. For a while I felt a bit guilty about that.....money spent and items still in great condition. Facing the truth that I loved all the pretties, but the pretties didn’t always love me allowed me to do some major editing. I like to think of it as letting go of the old me and finding a new, better and more authentic me along the way. Small steps, but even baby steps keep us headed in the right direction. Well done, lady, well done!

Bravo! I am breaking my edit into categories as well. And now following your lead to resist the urge to demote items to loungewear or just for working around the house. Back in the donation pile they go. Moving on.

Fantastic, Sterling. GOOD FOR YOU for being ruthless! We went through my daughter's tops yesterday and probably culled 20, a mix of short- and long-sleeve tees. There were only 2 long-sleeves in her drawer when we were done! (The situation was slightly less dire once the laundry was finished.) But I kept telling her, regarding tops that either she didn't like or that didn't fit, "there's no point in having clothes you don't really have."

Well done! I need to get past the urge to just demote something to loungewear too. I love that you broke your tops into categories in order to tackle this. I think I'll approach my jeans/pants/leggings this way today. Thanks for the inspiration. And congrats on the weight loss!

I agree with you, resist the urge to “demote” to lounge or sleep or gym wear! I do that only very rarely. Mostly because the palette I use for those categories is specific and I don’t want to muddy it up by throwing any old thing in there.

Best of luck with the next category!

Now, why did I never think to break wardrobe editing into categories?! What a smart way to approach this somewhat overwhelming project. If you ever have regret about the tops you took to a Goodwill, remind yourself that they didn’t fit you well.

Sweet Sterling, after your weight loss journey it makes complete sense that 90% of your items are ill-fitting. But that's an overwhelming thought to get rid of and replace in one swoop, isn't it.

LOVE how you broke down your edit into bite size pieces so that it's easier on the hands, head and heart. WELL DONE. You are being clever, organized, and keeping the momentum high. Proud of you. ONWARD to the next category.

Yesterday while I was assessing my closet, I realized that > 90% of my tops could easily be culled due to poor fit. A part of me wanted to reach in, toss them in the donation box, and just be done with it. But that seemed rash.

Instead I focused on subcategories, starting with "casual." I assessed the fit of every single "casual" top in my wardrobe by trying it on in front of a mirror. I held my breath as I placed all the oversized tops in the donation box.

I culled eight casual tops. All of them in close-to-pristine condition, but poorly fitting. I could have demoted them to sleep/lounge wear, but that would have been a step backwards in my opinion. I knew I had to be strict.

I currently own four casual tops. All of them are short-sleeved tee shirts (white, navy, and black) and were purchased in September. They fit me well. I feel comfortable wearing them and they suit both my current life stye and my climate.

As a bonus, I also edited out three (!) "work" tops that were obviously oversized. I've known for a while that these three tops needed to be moved on, but for some reason, made excuses to keep them.

I drove my donation box straight to the Good Will so that I didn't have the opportunity to change my mind or second guess myself.

I will start to assess my "dressy casual" tops this week.

P.S. I need to do this now, along with everyone else, for strength and motivation.
