Consider how you would wear them for the next 5 months in our cold climate.. to show ankle or even just have an air-flow point between bootie and pant, at this point in the year I'd at least be wearing nude knee-highs.
In reality I have not worn my BFs since September and I don't find them that practical for our winters - I'm also in TO; cold combined with slush suggests tall boots to me.

Thanks a lot, guys. I have a pair of higher-shaft booties with cute buttons up the side that were wonderful a couple of years ago, but I fear that the square toe will make them look quite dated now.
http://www.planetshoes.com/ite.....tara/14857
Suz/Sveta, they're the boots I wore to the first Toronto gathering.
I quail at the prospect of shopping for boots for my impossible feet. I guess we'll see what happens.

I am eager to see the size down. I know this style will work. And I agree with Runcarla, that a pair of higher shaft booties might allow for wearing them cuffed through the nasty weather.

Late cuff-roller here. Now I don't want to un-roll. Do give it a try. I just got a pair of high shafted Chelsea boots. The combination might just work out for messy winter since the pants cuffs won't be dragging through the snow. Fahionable AND practical?

Welcome to the Catherine fan club!

It does take some time to find your boyfriend jean size. And that size can vary from brand to brand.

I have had to size down up to 2 sizes in boyfriend jeans because I prefer a slim boyfriend silhouette. Oddly not in the Catherines, but in other brands, definitely yes. The smaller size has meant the waistband can be too tight. My solution is to secretly extend the waistband with a small child's hair-tie. Preferably in a color matching the jeans. Then I hide the whole operation with a belt.

I know there are waist extender accessories you can buy, but I find a hair tie works fine.

Yay, Michelle! You got the Catherines! I'm so glad you're going to compare sizes. These look like they might work if you want a looser fit, but it's hard to tell with your top covering the waist, hip, and rise. The lower leg looks good, but in the back, it looks like there may be too much fabric in the seat. I like Sveta's idea of going for a slightly slimmer boyfriend fit rather than the full-on baggy fit (and these seem to be more toward the latter on you).

PS - a semi tucked fluid top with a belt is my favorite way to wear bf jeans. You get the structure of tucking and belting but since it's loose at the sides and back there's plenty of room for the muffin top to hide.

I also think they are a bit too big in the thighs. I have the catherines and got my regular KUT size in them (which is one or even two numbers down from my size in other brands so for me at least the brand runs very large). They are supposed to be more of a slim BF fit rather than a super baggy one.

Michelle, that's a good strategy. Order the size down and lets compare, as well as get the styling right. The rolled hems (rolled more than you have now), work well with ankle boots with high shafts. I also suspect that they will be long enough UN-rolled with your Munro booties and black socks for Winter. We have a good head start here.

How exciting! As one who was also later to the party with BF jeans (and in my case also every other trend out there) I think that you will love them! I don't have extra input from what the others said, just excited for/with you... And if you have come this far, don't be afraid to take it all the way and roll the hems higher. I think that it will feel right faster than you think. That's what happened to me...

My first thought is they look too big. I have the Catherine's and she is fun to hang out with. I agree with the others try belting and semi-tucking. Roll them a little more at the ankles. I really like the look on you.

Sveta, to answer your question they're currently sitting on my hips without a belt.
They're definitely extremely baggy in the thighs. I was a bit put off by the puckering fabric, and when I first had them on the legs felt like boot cuts. I'm relieved to know that my instincts for tactile fit weren't off and they are, in fact, too big. Which is astonishing.
Angie, I do have them rolled just once in these pics, and I'm far more comfortable with the idea of full-length jeans, but that piece of the puzzle may fall into place for me once I've sized down?
It's a mighty, mighty pain to exchange from Canada, so I think I'll just order the size down and return one or both depending on the outcome.
Thank you for working with me to master a look I've long been curious about. I hope I can make it happen.
Your reply

Oh my goodness you have a way with words. I'm giggling at youlookflab. Hilarious. I am going to have to figure out a way to follow your blog.

But over to Catherine... Honestly it's a bit hard to tell if they are big, because your shirt is covering most of your butt. They might be. Mine fit like this though. But I should qualify... I have white ones in two sizes because I like the roominess for summer and fat days, but the smaller ones for casual days at work. The bigger ones do feel sloppy sometimes.

Michelle, I did own a pair of Catherine BF jeans and if yours are as soft as mine were they are real winner.
BF jeans can come in different level of slouchness. They can be pretty slim, baggy or really slouchy - it is all a personal preference. Somehow for your style I envision the slim BF as the best fit - similar how they fit on the model.
Did you size up in these jeans - they seem very roomy in the thighs. How much of the extra fabric is there on your thighs? Part of me really wants to see a size down. I also cannot see the crotch point here to see if it is dropped or not. Are you wearing belt with them - if not and they sit too low because of this it may be another reason for the bagginess.
Sorry, I am afraid I am confusing things more and not much help :-(

Thanks for trying these, sweet Michelle. You are a sport.

They look a size big. How do you feel about sizing down? Furthermore, boyfriend jeans are usually cuffed at the ankle, so that means rolling them up a few times at the hem to expose part of the ankle - a little or a lot depending on your mood and the type of footwear you feel like wearing with the look. Does that make sense?

It's also very popular to belt BF jeans and partially tuck the front of your fluid fit top into its waistband. I know it all sounds very foreign and absurd, Michelle. But if you'd like to give the look a go - we are here to help you sort out fit and proportion.

Michelle, you are a brilliant and witty writer.

And Angie is a brilliant and astute stylist.

You and Catherine will soon be hanging out every single weekend. Or at least as long as the snow stays off the ground and you can find the proper footwear for her.

Wear that new winter white pullover with Catherine. Heck, maybe you can even semi-tuck?

For myself, I like tucked or semi-tucked tops best with my boyfriends. But others will surely chime in on that as well.

It's almost hilarious how late I am to the boyfriend jeans trend. Sort of akin to arriving at the new year's eve party at 12:45 or something...but in spite of all I've read on the subject, I still need your help to determine if this style is viable for me and if so how I can best wear it.

When Angie literally orders me to pick up a certain style of clothing, I generally do it. She has, after all, been single-handedly responsible for some of my favourite wardrobe items of all time. So when she insisted that I needed to own the famous Kut Catherines effective yesterday and even tracked down a vendor that delivered to Canada, I pulled the trigger.

So here they are, and for the first time in a long while, I'm totally at sea. Mhy primary evaluation technique for an item of clothing is to assess how the fit feels on my body.
http://eyeronic.wordpress.com/.....new-black/

Since the boyfriend jean silhouette is brand new to me, I have no clue if it's hitting in the right spots, if the obvious bagginess is supposed to be there or not, if the hems are supposed to be more tapered than they are, etc. They're undeniably comfortable, but I'm not sure if that's because they're fitting me just right or because I went one size too big.

The other aspect that's throwing me for a loop is the rise. I haven't worn hip-slung pants since I was quite a lot thinner, and for good reason - high rises make me feel less inclined to start a rival site called YouLookFlab. :p As a result, I have contradictory instincts vying for dominance in my head. One side of my brain tells me that the slouchy, loose-fitting pants demand shorter tops for maximum flattery. The other side balks at the notion and wants to gravitate towards longer tops, using the old argument that bf jeans are essentially just more relaxed straight-legs and should be treated accordingly.

So, I turn to the many Catherine veterans here for guidance. Please sort me out?
Your post
